Freckles and His Friends

Freckles and his Friends is an American comic strip set in the peaceful small town of Shadyside where young Freckles McGoosey and his friends lived. Although the long-running strip, created by Merrill Blosser, is remembered for its continuing storyline involving a group of teenagers, it originally featured a child at the age of six or seven in gag-a-day situations.Illustrated by Blosser and later by Henry Formhals (1908-1981), Freckles and His Friends was ghostwritten by Fred Fox (1903-1981). Henry Formhals - Joe Jinks 9/8/1946 Original Sunday Page Art Henry Formhals assisted Mel Blosser on ’Freckles and His Friends’ from 1933 to 1965. He eventually continued the comic completely until 1971. Between 1946 and 1953, he also worked on the ’Joe Jinks’ strip. In addition, he assisted Charlie Plumb on the ’Ella Cinders’ Sunday page. . Vic Forsythe started Joe Jinks in 1918 as a strip about cars. Henry Formhals took over in 1946 and carried it to its end in 1953. Carol is a good example of what was considered a typical teenage girl of that time. It looks leisurely, but must have involved frantic movement.
