Al Kilgore Bullwinkle Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-29-63 (McClure Syndicate, 1963). Bullwinkle, Rocky, Boris (in disguise), and Natasha (well, at least her legs) are featured on this daily, but it still gives us a sinking feeling. If this were an episode of Jay Ward's wacky Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, it might have been titled "Too Soon, Typhoon? -or- Moose Fink Gonna Sink!" The strip was created in ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 17" x 4.75". Lightly toned and in Excellent condition otherwise.

Marie Severin The Big Book of Martyrs: "St. Maria Goretti, the Good Child" Complete 3-Page Story Original Art (DC Comics, 1997). Severin's naturalistic style intensifies the horror of the murder of Maria Goretti in 1902 at the hands of a lustful neighbor. The point of the story is the canonization of the victim in 1950 as Patron Saint of Teenage Girls. Splendid crosshatching, reminiscent of the style of the artist's brother, John Severin. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11.5" x 15.5". Light toning. A few caption-boxes have fallen away. Excellent condition.

Bob McLeod New Mutants Commission Painting and Preliminary Art Original Art Group of 2 (2000).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
Bob McLeod New Mutants Commission Painting and Preliminary Art Original Art Group of 2 (2000). With the New Mutants film set for a 2019 release date, and with it based on the original team (the "Demon Bear" story specifically), we expect interest in these characters to uptick. Artist Bob McLeod co-created the team with Chris Claremont in 1982. Here, Mirage, Cannonball, Wolfsbane, and Sunspot battle two Sentinels. The image was created as a personal request commission for a fan, but is as dynamic as any cover that McLeod produced for this fan-favorite team. Created in opaque watercolors on 15" x 20" illustration board, signed and dated in the lower left. Also included is the stunning prelim graphite piece on 11" x 17" paper. It is signed and dated as well. Both are in Excellent condition.

Clyde Lamb Now, Let's See... Original Art (c. 1950s-60s)....
Clyde Lamb Now, Let's See... Original Art (c. 1950s-60s). Lamb, a gagman of the old-fashioned Big Nose/Big Foot school, takes a break from his syndicated newspaper strip of 1949-56, Herman, to deliver a cautionary message about the perils of jabbering while on a fishing excursion. Says one wife to another: "Now, let's see -- what were we talking about before they interrupted us?" Brilliant application of a non-academic painting technique to a thoroughly professional cartooning style. The mountain (background) bears an eerie resemblance to the trademark peak of Paramount Pictures Corp. There is a certain (unintended) resemblance to the style of Virgil "VIP" Partch. Oils on heavy-duty illustration board. Image area, 19" x 16". Barked edges and one peeled corner. Very Good condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: Lorena Bobbitt Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). The notorious man-mutilator glowers from this intense close-up, in broad-stroke ink-stipple (pointillism). Price's controversial series of true-crime trading cards peaked with the all-women set, Vol. 3. This portrait was developed just as Price was producing a parody-song recording for radio's The Dr. Demento Show, based on the Bobbitt case: "Short'nin' Men." The art is significantly larger than its miniature published version. Ink and white watercolor over blue pencil on two-ply, blue-line layout stock. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Excellent condition.

Bob Powell Green Hornet #14: "Spirit of '76" Story Page 10 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1943). The Spirit of '76, a costumed hero of the Golden Age, braces for an escape from Nazi-occupied territory. Powell's style is maturing rapidly, here -- a good decade before the great cartoonist would find his truer level as a leading horror/SF illustrator. Though unrelated to Will Eisner's Spirit franchise, this character is patently a takeoff on Eisner, with a similar mask and Revolutionary Era clothing in place of a suit-and-tie wardrobe. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white retouching. Image area, 13" x 18". Light pencil marks (lettering guidelines) remain visible -- a vivid reminder of Powell's painstaking approach, inasmuch as he handled the lettering, too. Light toning. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Joe Edwards Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #57 Complete 1-Page "Li'l Jinx" Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 1960). Backup character Li'l Jinx negotiates a loan with her father. The punchline is worth the wait. Clever gag utilizing strange logic, emphatically related in large scale with excellent timing and emphatic brush-inking. Edwards' distinctive signature appears in the second panel. The Li'l Jinx stories represented the Archie line's riposte to Jimmy Hatlo's signature feature, Little Iodine. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 17.5". Excellent condition.

Fred Ray and Jack Burnley Tomahawk #32 Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1955). Tomahawk and Dan Hunter, DC's Batman-and-Robin-in-Buckskin characters, strike an aggressive pose in a dynamic introductory scene. Ray deepens the connection with Batman by placing the heroes atop an array of gigantic properties (clocks), such as the definitive Batman artist Dick Sprang often employed. Hard-charging action in every panel -- a classic, from a period when such heroic titles as Tomahawk heralded a Silver Age rebirth for the superhero genre. Ink over graphite on blue-line Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 18". Moderate toning. Replacement logotype, carefully retouched to match the layout. Excellent condition. Robert Webb and Iger Studio Cowgirl Romances #7 Story Page 7 Original Art (Fiction House, 1951). A cattle-rustling mob menaces an heiress and an honest cowboy -- until an unlikely hero intervenes. Intense sequence from one of the more important Golden Age Western titles. Webb, art director for S.M. "Jerry" Iger's assembly-line studio, dominates the page with his signature facial designs -- especially in the scowling villain at lower right. This is the same Robert Hayward Webb who delivered the excellent Classics Illustrated: Frankenstein and was responsible for the Iger Studio's weirder pre-Code horror comics for Superior and Ajax-Farrell. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.25" x 19". Light to moderate toning. Slight wrinkling at right edge. Very Good condition.

Robert Webb Cowgirl Romances #5 Story Page 7 Original Art (Fiction House, 1951). This intense sequence depicts a case of frontier vengeance as it simmers to a boiling point -- an example of one of the 1950s' toughest Western comics. The assembly-line artwork (a standard practice with S.M. "Jerry" Iger's studio) bears the overriding touch of art director Robert Hayward Webb, most notably in the villains' scowling, ratlike faces. (Webb is best known for Sheena, Queen of the Jungle and the Classics Illustrated Frankenstein adaptation of the 1940s.) Ink over graphite on Iger-brand Bristol board. Image area, 12.5" x 18.25". Moderate toning and light marginal staining. Excellent condition.

Archie's Joke Book Magazine #37 Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 1958)....
Archie's Joke Book Magazine #37 Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 1958). Where Bob Montana's earlier Archie stories had dealt in character-driven situational humor, Archie's Joke Book tipped the scale toward one-liners and put-down gags, in keeping with a general trend of insult humor within the popular culture-at-large. This exemplary page breaks character for rivals Archie Andrews and Reggie Mantle, who unite to pick on egghead classmate Dilton Doily. Some wicked facial expressions, here. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.75" x 18.5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Signed by both artist in the lower left, it is also signed by Joe Sinnott on the back where he dated it 11-1987. So we know it was created at least by that date. In Excellent condition.

Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-8-39 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate 1939). Milton Caniff started his career on a title called Dickie Dare but soon got the attention of Joseph Patterson from the New York daily News who hired Caniff for a new strip called Terry and the Pirates, which debuted in October 1934. This strip is a shining example of Milton Caniff's style in which he drew characters you could identify with and root for. This daily features Pat Ryan, Cheery Blaze, and her father, Captain Blaze in a four panel strip entitled "Just Dropped in for a Spat." The ink over graphite on Bristol board strip has an image area of 20" x 6", and is in Very Good condition, with handling wear, toning, and staining. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Michael H. Price and Jim Marrs Oswald's Confession & Other Tales from the War: "Lotta Brass!" Partial Story Group of 6 (Cremo Studios, 2012). Marrs is better known for his conspiracy history Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy, and for Oliver Stone's movie version, JFK. Marrs also worked as a comics artist, often collaborating with Price. This example represents a Civil War-era tale of battlefront irony, modeled in homage to EC Comics' war books of the 1950s. The pages were created in 1998 in ink and felt marker over graphite on textured watercolor stock, and eventually published in 2012. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning and smudging, with light fading in some dialogue balloons. Excellent condition.

The pioneering comedian Mantan Moreland (1903-1973) inspired this stipple portrait while Price was beginning the research project that would lead to several magazine articles and a full-scale biography, Mantan the Funnyman (2006). The image captures Moreland at a late-in-life stage -- long after his signature film of 1941, King of the Zombies -- when he was beginning a comeback as a television actor. Ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 9.5" x 12.5". Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price and Todd Camp Southern-Fried Homicide Vol. 1: "Creatures Great and Small" Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Cremo Studios, 1998). Southern Gothic carnival horrors, with an autobiographical angle: Price based the central character on a cousin who had managed freak-show attractions for a Texas-based midway operator. The monster of the story is imaginary, but the settings are true-to-life. The artists based the looks and attitude of the carney-man character on a mutual friend, the actor Bill Paxton. Ink over graphite on watercolor stock. The story has reappeared in the 2017 anthology Deep in the Horrors of Texas. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Frank Bolle Red Mask #43 Story Page 4 Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954)...
Frank Bolle Red Mask #43 Story Page 4 Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954) The post-WWII superhero famine was hardly a matter of such characters vanishing. They merely retreated into the Western comics and other adventurous titles until a larger resurgence could take place during the middle-late 1950s. This choice example of costumed heroism pits the frontier swashbucklers Red Mask (alias Redmask) and Black Phantom against a mob of owlhoots. (That's Western lingo for outlaws.) Bolle was a master at conveying hard-charging action with economical, spontaneous brush-strokes and bold, heavy-black ink gravity -- anticipating the Sin City style of Frank Miller. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 18.25". Light toning. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Gil Kane and Bob Wiacek -Captain America and Spider-Man Illustration Original Art (Marvel, c. 1973). Looking like it was designed to go with the story from Marvel Team-Up #13, which teamed Ol' Winghead with Ol' Webhead to fight against both the Grey Gargoyle and those "Bucketheads" of A.I.M., this piece is actually formatted too wide to be for a comic book. The addition of the word "July" in the top margin makes us think this is an unused illustration intended for a calendar or something similar. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 11.75". Signed by Kane and Wiacek in the image area, and signed again in the top margin. Many capable contributing artists on Blondie over the long haul -- but only one Chic Young, the master creator. Here stands Young at a peak of accomplishment, with two of the feature's classic situations: (1) Dagwood Bumstead, attempting to bathe in privacy (good luck with that), and (2) an intrusion by his foul-tempered boss, J.C. Dithers. One of these days, Dagwood is bound to fix that lock on the bathroom door. Accompanied by a well-preserved tearsheet. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17" x 15". Moderate age-toning. Logotype (upper left) is a replacement photocopy. Staining around seam where two horizontal tiers are joined. Very Good condition.

Vess' background as a comic-book artist -- especially on Swamp Thing and suchlike allegorical fantasies -- makes him a natural fit for Charles de Lint's Tanglewood series, where Vess has delivered some of the most engaging wood-spirit images ever to grace the printed page. This lovely composition features two key cat-characters in communion with the Apple Tree Man, no doubt a distant cousin of the Swamp Thing and even likelier a descendant of Jack Kirby's seminal tree creature of 1960, Groot. Danny Bulanadi Galactus-Like Being Original Art (1983)....
Danny Bulanadi Galactus-Like Being Original Art (1983). The Fantastic Four's world-eating menace, or somebody a whole lot like him, strikes a very un-Galactus-like action pose in this large-scale entry. Bulanadi summons the overriding influence of Jack Kirby, to the finer point of Kirbyesque energy-bursts from the fists. Likely a commission or speculative piece, with small areas left un-inked and patches of un-erased pencil lines. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 18". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Guillaume Sorel - Unpublished Splash Page 3 Original Art (c. 1990). A child's toy interrupts a grisly murder scene on this fantastically moody piece created in ink and grey tone watercolor with white paint highlights. It is numbered as Page 3 in the lower right of the 12" x 16.5" image area of the Bristol board. As a bonus, this piece comes with a very nice rough layout sketch by an unidentified artist. It could be an evil scientist, or someone laying down some crazy beats, but it's a nice piece of pure graphite art on irregularly cut 11.75" x 13" paper. Signed in the lower left. Both pieces of art are in Excellent condition.

Neal Adams Studios and John Buscema (attributed) Star Trek: The Time Stealer [Book and Record Set] #BR513 Story Page 5 Original Art (Power Records, 1976). Captain Kirk converses with Konrac (who looks suspiciously like Conan the Barbarian) and an actual magic-using wizard onboard the bridge of the Enterprise. Spock and McCoy appear on the page as well. It's though that John Buscema drew Konrac in ever instance. You can see whiteout art correction on Konrac's lower jaw and chest. This suggests that Buscema drew him with a beard, which was removed by the Neal Adams art team. The page was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 13". The close-up of Bone McCoy in the last panel is a stat. There are pinholes in the top margin, and the page was mis-labeled as for the story "A Mirror For Futility" in the top margin. There is a very toned area that runs across the bottom section of the page. In Very Good condition.

Becky Krehbiel and Evans Krehbiel Lots To Color Cover Original Art and Logotype Overlay (Whitman Publ., 1963). A classic of the last century's coloring-book boom, Lots To Color inspired this masterful cover design by the Krehbiels, veterans of the art department at the Chicago Tribune. The lively design seems almost three-dimensional in the way the figures practically spring from the background -- a result of the combination of heavy outlining and boldly applied paint in a combination of subtle and aggressive tonalities. A signature-like footnote reading, "The Myers," is the artists' playful reference to their vacation-home in Fort Myers, FL. Accompanied by a good-condition reading copy of the publication, from the publisher's archives. Charcoal, tempera, and opaque watercolors over graphite on heavyweight Bristol board. Logotype appears on a transparent overlayer. Image area, 7.25" x 10.75". Excellent condition.

Frederic Rodrigo Gruger The Delineator Magazine Vol. 115 #4 and One Other Original Art Group of 2 (Butterick Publishing, 1929). Gruger's unique gift at pencil-driven photorealism graced many a story during the heyday of magazine fiction. Here are two of his finer efforts. The larger composition originated with a story called "The Landlady," by William Corcoran, in The Delineator, a long-running magazine for women. The smaller piece, here, is of undocumented publishing pedigree -- a moody drawing-room scene. Graphite with ink-wash and watercolor on illustration board. Image areas, 10" x 8" and 7.5" x 10". Moderate age-toning. Excellent condition.

Rick Hoberg and Tim Eldred The Strangers #7 Partial Story Original Art Group of 16 (Malibu Comics, 1993). Malibu's transformation from an experimental-indie company to a more conventional superhero factory hinged largely upon The Strangers, a team-book in the manner of Justice League and Avengers. This rambunctious array runs start-to-finish through the finale (page 23), missing only pages 5, 6, 8, 15, 16, 20, and 22. Mike Ploog and Alex Niño Marvel Premiere #38 Story Page 13 Weirdworld Original Art (Marvel, 1977). Ploog's sturdy breakdowns (basic art) provide a solid springboard for Niño's detailed renderings in finished pencilling and elaborate inking. The sword-and-sorcery saga is reminiscent of Wally Wood's World of the Wizard King saga of the 1960s, notably in the elfin hero and a voluptuous sprite of a leading lady. Ploog sneaks in a visual reference to his mentor, Will Eisner, in the characters of a big-nosed villain and his pet buzzard -- a nod to Eisner's recurring foils in The Spirit, Mr. Carrion and Julia the Vulture. Page is mis-labeled as for issue #33; appeared in #38. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Marginal adhesive residue. Excellent condition.
