John Romita Sr. and Joe Rubinstein Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #11 "Thundra" Page 17 Spot Illustration Original Art (Marvel, 1983). If you mixed She-Hulk with G.L.O.W. you might get Thundra. But she pre-dates both, as she first appeared in Fantastic Four #129 from 1972. The OHotMU states that she is 7'2" tall, and that is easy to believe seeing this huge illustration that almost fills the 11" x 16" Bristol board. Created in ink over graphite, she stands 14.25" tall on the page. The work is signed by Romita in the lower right. Lightly toned, the page is in Excellent condition.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Wally Wood Hercules Unbound #6 Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1976). DC's "Great Disaster" continuity has a long history, organic and spontaneous, dating from the Atomic Knights stories of the 1960s. The revival of Hercules as a post-WWIII protagonist is a high point, with Wood fulfilling the Great Artist duties that Murphy Anderson had handled on Atomic Knights. As usual, inker Wood proves the dominant contributor, bringing an expressive dynamism to Garcia Lopez's solid pencil compositions. Ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board, with painted white retouching. Image area, 10" x 15". Light to moderate toning and adhesive staining. Excellent condition.

The material is as funny as it is profuse, and this generous selection ranges from drolleries to knee-slappers and outright horselaugh-inducers. Better known for his single-panel comic strip, Office Hours, Olson really cut loose with the extensive series of magazine yockers, as represented here. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with occasional blue-pencil shading. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Kevin Nowlan Doctor Strangefate #1 Story Page 9 Original Art (Marvel/DC/Amalgam, 1996). Fans of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez' licensing images for DC Comics go nuts for the few comic stories that he illustrates, and here is a rather obscure and wonderful one! The Amalgam imprint was a cooperative project between Marvel and DC Comics like none other before. It was not a crossover... instead it was a mash-up of (usually) similar characters. The titular Doctor of this one-shot was a mash-up of Doctor Strange with Doctor Fate (and with Professor Charles Xavier thrown into the mix as well). Also on the page is White Witch (a mix of Zatanna and the Scarlet Witch), Skulk (Bruce Banner/Hulk and Solomon Grundy), and Jade Nova (Frankie Raye/Nova and Green Lantern/Kyle Rayner). Also on the page is Doctor Strangefate's servant Mxy (Wong and Mr. Mxyzptlk...). JLGL's art is as stunning as ever with its crisp, clean lines and incredible command of the characters. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.25" x 15.75". There is production registration tape in the margins. Signed by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez with a silver paint pen in the lower margin. In Excellent condition.

Warren Kremer (attributed) Little Dot's Uncles and Aunts #36 Cover Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1971). Perhaps the most obsessive-compulsive of Harvey's lineup of OCD-driven characters, Little Dot also prefigured the avant-garde Pop Art movement of the 1960s in her preoccupation with infinite barrages of circular patterns. (Dot's influence persists today in the monumental paintings and practical sculptures of Yayoi Kusama.) The selection here is exemplary of the style of Harvey Comics stalwart Kremer, imagining a bigger-than-real Little Dot jack-in-the-box. Neg Cochran Out Our Way Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-18-70 (NEA Inc., 1970). Cochran's run on Out Our Way (since 1957) kept alive the spirit of creator J.R. Williams to the extent that the feature still seemed as nostalgic (and as sarcastic) in the '70s as Williams had intended. Here, Willis Willitt gets fed up with running errands for his sister. Inscribed to Roland Reinhard, a prominent comics buff. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Faint toning. Light diagonal creasing at upper right. Excellent condition.

Nestor Redondo Swamp Thing #15 Story Page 20 Original Art (DC Comics, 1975). The mid-to-late 1970s period of Swamp Thing proves as crucial to the trademark as anything from co-creator Bernie Wrightson, especially in the development of Abigail Arcane (pictured) as a psychically powered presence. Redondo's richly textured artwork, too, prefigures the detailed 1980s work of Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben. This explosive climax-page features key supporting characters Matt Cable and Jefferson Bolt, in addition to the title creature. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Warren Kremer (attributed) Little Dot's Uncles and Aunts #49 Cover Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1973). The circular obsessions of Little Dot inspired infinite variations upon the theme: Here, Dot imagines a telephone dial decorated with the faces of her supporting characters. The title was nearing an end by the time of this issue, but Little Dot could face retirement in the secure knowledge that she had helped to inspire the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. (Her influence persists today in the compulsive dot-heavy paintings of Yayoi Kusama.) Pronounced adhesive discoloration is a vestige of paste-up elements (logotype, etc.) that have fallen away. The page-stock has been trimmed at a peculiar angle, causing the art to appear tilted. More can be seen here of the telephone than was visible in the published version. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 8" x 9". Principal artwork is in Very Good condition.

Edgar Church Linens Advertising Template Original Art (Church Studio, c. 1930s). Master designer Church often created versatile templates calculated to accommodate any variety of advertising clients -- such as this inviting piece, which appears to pitch a laundry or bed-linens company. The generous blank spaces would allow the insertion of a merchant's name, address, and telephone number. The detailed drawing, panel-style layout, and emphatic borders demonstrate the artist's fondness for the comic-book medium. (Church is revered among comics enthusiasts as the developer of the legendary Mile High Collection.) Ink over graphite on off-white Bristol board. Image area, 8" x 12.5". In this splendid Church design, one can almost hear the "ah-OOO-gah!" sound from the flurry of lightning bolts at lower right. Church's extreme perspective is such that it seems the distant motorist ahead cannot miss the blast. This near-finished drawing, lacking only a layer of ink, would have been prepared as an advertising pitch for the automotive firm noted at lower left. Church's affinity for comics art is evident. Aaron Lopresti and Matthew Ryan Justice League: Generation Lost #11 Internal Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 2010). The robotic characters from DC's Metal Men franchise dominate this split-level whopper -- seems they have been reprogrammed to attack various Justice Leaguers. Some ferro-cious business, here, distinguished by inker Ryan's ability to make black-and-white artwork look metallic. Brilliant. Signed by Ryan at lower left. Ink over graphite on bright-white DC-brand Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Tom Grindberg, Bob Almond, and Harry Candelario Warlock and the Infinity Watch #23 Story Page 3 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1993). Grindberg's minimalistic page design, with high-contrast inking and extra-bold crosshatching, suits ideally this sequence involving a clash between Adam Warlock and the Thunder God, Thor. The writer, Jim Starlin, also is known as the definitive author-artist on the earlier Warlock stories. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.
