Dick Ayers Dread of Night: "Outlaw Zombies" Complete Unpublished 8-Page Story Original Art (Hamilton Comics, 1992) Extravagant and outrageous, this horror-Western yarn catches Ayers reverting to the ferocity of style with which he had distinguished Eerie Publications' horror titles of the 1970s, with a nod to his more visually restrained Jonah Hex stories of the same general period. Pete Hoffman Jeff Cobb Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-11-66 (General Features Corp., c. 1966). Fans of Steve Roper and Mike Nomad will find plenty to admire about Jeff Cobb, a similarly conceived showcase for journalistic heroism. Hoffman had ghosted Steve Roper during its transition from gag-strip to dramatic narrative, and then in 1954 received the chance to launch his own such suspense-and-intrigue feature -- which lasted into 1978. This example reflects Hoffman's maturing style of the 1960s. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 17.5" x 5.5". In Excellent condition, with tape residue in the borders.

John Wayne Adventure Comics #5 Story Page 9-10 Original Art (Toby Press, 1950).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
John Wayne Adventure Comics #5 Story Page 9-10 Original Art (Toby Press, 1950). Wayne had become a major-league Hollywood star as early as 1939's Stagecoach, but his comic-book series kept him rooted in the rip-snorting matinée-Western style of his younger days. These pages recapture the carnival setting of one of Wayne's earliest films, 1932's The Shadow of the Eagle. Here he confronts a sinister-looking midway spieler in a House of Mirrors. Expressive facial studies throughout from the unbilled illustrator. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: "Martha Beck" Original Art (Cremo Studios & Shel-Tone Publ., 1994). Price's controversial true-crime card-folio series devoted its third volume to female miscreants -- including the serial murderer Beck, who with cohort Raymond Fernandez killed as many as 20 women during 1947-49. The large-scale portrait captures a truculent nature in concise pen-and-brush strokes, patterned after the style of cartoonist Basil Wolverton. John Byrne Namor, the Sub-Mariner #7 Cover Production Material (Marvel, 1990). A striking cover by John Byrne produced in an unusual method. After doing the original pencils, Byrne photocopied them onto Duotone board to apply the shading (and re-black the top portion) by hand. It is a dramatic and memorable cover, even if the villain, "Sluj", was not. This issue saw his introduction... and also his death. The cover was produced with photocopied line art on Duotone board with an image area of 9.75" x 10". It has been personalized in the UPC box "To Terry Kavanagh". In Excellent condition. Neal Adams and Bill Draut The Phantom Stranger #4 Story Page 19 Original Art (DC Comics, 1969). Adams' mastery of extreme close-ups and angular cinematic viewpoints is well represented in this page featuring two of DC's weirder characters -- the ghostly Phantom Stranger and the ghost-busting Dr. Thirteen -- along with a creepy old woman. A flashback to the woman's younger days inspires a provocative period-piece drawing (lower tier), complete with a matched set of gargoyles. Brilliant stuff from a breakthrough period for Adams. Walter Berndt Smitty Custom Illustration Original Art (1974). This late-in-life scene featuring his signature characters, Smitty and Herby, finds veteran funnyman Berndt in thorough command of a characteristically brisk and spontaneous pen-line, deepened by strategically placed heavy-black ink patches. The bantering dialogue is a delight. Smitty is Berndt's imaginary forever-young self, based upon his boyhood experiences as an assistant to such great cartoonists as Krazy Kat's George Herriman and Thimble Theatre/Popeye's E.C. Segar. The piece featured here originated as a greeting to a pal named Marge. Ink and colored wax-pencils over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 11". Carmine Infantino and Frank McLaughlin Danger Trail #4 Story Page 35 Original Art (DC Comics, 1993). Inspired by Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992), author Len Wein fashioned a Danger Trail revival along similarly ultraviolent lines. Tarantino was unavailable, so Infantino stepped in, to winning effect. Climactic showdown page from the epic mob-war series features an open-plan layout -- no conventional borders or gutters -- and heavy-duty gunplay. McLaughlin responds to Infantino's fluid composition with an emphatic job of inking that resembles an extreme version of Infantino's own ink style. Unusual use of Zipatone pattern. Also unusual that a DC project should have been drawn on a sheet of Marvel-brand art-stock. Ink and shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.
