Dave Stevens - Rocketeer Illustration Original Art (1990)....
Dave Stevens - Rocketeer Illustration Original Art (1990). You may have heard of a Rocketeer piece sell for a whopping 60,000 euros (around $64,000) at a European auction house -- it says a lot about the demand for this character! Everything you see here is by Stevens... including the Michael Kaluta signature! The story is that Stevens got some input from Kaluta on the design of the image. Having drawn it, Stevens wanted to recognize Kaluta's contribution...so he copied the other artist's signature from a print he had lying around. The piece has been published in The Rocketeer: The Complete Adventures Deluxe Edition, among other books. Ink and ink wash over graphite and blue pencil on paper with an image area of 10" x 7.5". This is a stunning piece. Slight tanning. In Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Walter Hoban Jerry on the Job Daily Comic Original Art Undated (International Feature Service, c. 1930s). Hoban's Jerry on the Job, about a hyperactive office boy, ranks with E.C. Segar's Thimble Theater (alias Popeye) and Clifford Sterrett's Polly and Her Pals in terms of energetic slapstick, extravagant wordplay, and high-style cartoon exaggerations. This fine specimen finds Jerry in typical smart-aleck form -- On the Job, as usual. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24.25" x 5.5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Rick Hoberg and Sam Grainger What If? #7 Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Marvel Comics, 1978). Hoberg suggests the early-1960s style of Steve Ditko in crafting this alternate-reality version of the Spider-Man origin. The tale imagines what might have happened if various characters other than schoolboy Peter Parker had become the super-powered character. The selection includes pages 19 and 22-24 of a 33-page story. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". The seminal high-adventure strip crams a great deal of actionful characterization into only eight cinematic panels, arrayed in large scale. Orson Lowell Hanged Skeleton Pulp Magazine Original Art (c. 1930s). It's a mystery -- both in the situation depicted, and in the origin of this striking pulp-fiction-type image. Bill Freyse Our Boarding House with Major Hoople Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-15-59 (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1959). Created in 1921 by Gene Ahern, Our Boarding House was inherited in 1939 by Freyse, who ran with the feature for 30 rip-snorting years of boisterous hilarity. This prime-period specimen confronts the lovably pompous Major Amos Hoople with a surprise from his impatient wife. Hoople is the W.C. Fields of the funnypapers -- a unique, irreplaceable character. Frederic Rodrigo Gruger The Saturday Evening Post Original Art Group of 2 (Curtis Publ., 1918).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
Frederic Rodrigo Gruger The Saturday Evening Post Original Art Group of 2 (Curtis Publ., 1918). This matched set served to illustrate James Hergesheimer's celebrated novel Java Head, a tale of forbidden romance and tangled destinies, back in the day when the Saturday Evening Post launched many a bestseller. Gruger's art also established the visual tone for George Melford's 1923 film version. (Java Head is the name of an ancestral manor -- not a reference to a coffee addiction, even though the grouch in the drawings might appear to be suffering from caffeine withdrawal.) Gruger, hailed by Time magazine as "the dean of U.S. magazine illustrators," was an acknowledged influence upon Norman Rockwell. Java Head captures Gruger at a peak of photorealistic pencil artistry, smearing the lines with a fingertip or an eraser to lend depth. Graphite on illustration board. Image areas, 14" x 10" and 10" x 15". Moderate age-toning. The horizontal piece has a triangular crack at lower right. Good to Very Good condition.

Howard Scott - Tip Top Bread Billboard Illustration Painting Original Art (Ward Bakery, c. 1950s). Hutchinson's The Eighth Wonder leapt promptly from an appearance in Cosmopolitan into a splendid hardcover edition. Gruger's moody, lifelike illustration captures well the suspenseful and contemplative nature of the story. Graphite on lightweight, textured illustration board. Image area, 10.5" x 14.25". Dick Moores Gasoline Alley Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-5-74(Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1974). Moores' long run on Gasoline Alley approaches the levels of mastery achieved by original creator Frank King. One of Moores' more brilliant strokes was the occasional reminder of where the strip had earned its name: In an automotive garage. Characters featured here are Slim Skinner, Chipper Wallet, and mechanics Sarge and Hack. Ink and integral Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 16.5" x 5". George Wunder Undocumented Daily Strip Original Art (c. 1930s). Before he succeeded Milton Caniff on Terry & the Pirates in 1946, Wunder had toiled in near-anonymity as a general-purpose cartoonist and editorialist with Associated Press Newsfeatures. This elusive suspense piece suggests an unissued, possibly undeveloped, pilot strip, what with its Depression-era fashions and a pulp-fiction inking style quite different from Wunder's AP work. A brilliantly conceived piece, withal. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24.5" x 6". Moderate toning, barked corners. Very Good condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Walter Berndt Smitty Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-29-64 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1964). Berndt's brisk and spontaneous pen-line, deepened by heavy-black patches of ink, propels this shaggy-dog gag to a fine punchline. Though fanciful and imaginative, Smitty proves near-autobiographical -- deriving from Berndt's early experiences as an office-boy assistant to such great cartoonists as Krazy Kat's George Herriman and Thimble Theatre's E.C. Segar. This example is a delight. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6". Moderate toning, more pronounced at edges. Excellent condition.

In the grim climate of the Great Depression, however, Momand transformed the strip to a more conventional domestic scenario. Here, a life-saving deed appears to pay off for the rescuer. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. A bit of age-toning and edge-scuffing, but otherwise in Excellent condition.

Mr. Spock has a bit of 'cat scratch fever' after an encounter with an alien cat. Wonderful images of the cast and sets from this beloved TV series. Although, in the first panel of Page 17, you can see that Lt. Uhura was drawn as a blonde haired Caucasian woman, while Helmsman Sulu was drawn as a black man in this story... although both kept their original name! It is possible that this was due to contract negotiations concerning licensing their likenesses for the Star Trek animated cartoon series. These pages were created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Lightly toned, and in Excellent condition.

Ernie Bushmiller Fritzi Ritz Sunday Comic Strip Original dated 12-21-52(United, 1952). A big piece, almost two feet in width, from a time when the comics ran big on the page and were drawn even bigger. Though upstaged by Nancy and Sluggo, Bushmiller's Fritzi Ritz carried on as both a supporting character in Nancy, and in her own separate feature -- a more personal endeavor for the artist, who had caricatured himself and his wife as Phil Fumble and Fritzi Ritz. This episode, with a Christmas theme, was done in ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 22.5" x 15". Light toning and staining. In Excellent condition.
