P. Craig Russel and Michael T. Gilbert Elric #5 Story Page 17 Original Art (Pacific, 1984)....
P. Craig Russel and Michael T. Gilbert Elric #5 Story Page 17 Original Art (Pacific, 1984). The dynamic and stylized art from this incredible pairing of artists was the perfect match for the tales of the King of Melniboné. Here, Elric and Rackhir find themselves trapped between pigs, snakes, and a... thing... in the story "Through the Shade Gate". Russel provided the layouts, which Gilbert penciled, and then Russell inked for the finished art. The masterful page is crafted on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Signed by both artist in the lower margin. In Excellent condition.

Jim Raymond (as Chic Young) Blondie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-26-64, and Conceptual Pencil Art Group of 2 (King Features Syndicate, 1964). Dagwood Bumstead's obsession with sandwiches leads him to invent the ultimate hot-weather snack. One of the best, most bizarre and outrageous gags ever to appear in Blondie -- or in any other strip, for that matter. Though signed as creator Young, Raymond had long since taken charge of the art, to the betterment of the feature. His accompanying pencil script is the perfect garnish. Peter Gross The Books of Magic Story Pages 1-3 Original Art (DC Comics, 1997). A transitional sequence in the development of Tim Hunter as a dominant magician -- one might say, the Harry Potter before Harry Potter. Here, the character undertakes an expedition through Heartland America. A reference to the magician known as Zatanna cinches a kinship to the larger DC Universe of heroes. A smart tangent from from Neil Gaiman's original concept. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with drybrush and Zipatone effects. Image area, 10.5" x 15.75". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Bud Sagendorf Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-23-65 (King Features Syndicate, 1965). Sagendorf enjoyed the most direct kinship to Popeye short of its creator -- serving an apprenticeship to E.C. Segar during the 1930s and then gradually assuming the lead position of author-artist. This delightful example of Popeye a la Sagendorf features a confrontation between the famous sailor-man and his chronic antagonist, Bluto the Terrible, alias Brutus. Edgar Church Coolerator Original Art (Church Studio, 1933). Chuck Berry didn't just make up the word Coolerator for his hit recording of "You Never Can Tell" in 1964. The term comes from a once-popular brand of icebox, as documented in this splendid advertising piece from master designer Church. The distinctive heart-shaped design encompasses the logotype of a refrigeration company in Colorado. Church also is a big name among comics enthusiasts, identified with the fabled Mile High Collection. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 9". Two pasted-in strips of lettering have loosened but remain in place. Excellent condition.

Bob Montana Archie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-2-58 (King Features Syndicate, 1958). Many successors have drawn and dramatized Archie -- right up to the present day's Riverdale teleseries -- but nobody except Montana could relate to the teen-comedy characters on a personal level. He had based them, after all, on friends from his high-school days. This splendid episode finds goofball Jughead Jones missing, and hiding where no one would think to look for him. Inscribed to chess champion and comics enthusiast Manfred Zitzman. Ink and Zipatone shading (two textures) over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 5.5". Pronounced adhesive staining; otherwise in Very Good condition.

V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-4-70 (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1970). Hamlin had altered the course of comics in 1939 by transforming his prehistoric-adventure strip, Alley Oop, into a time-travel series, bridging all the ages of history up to modern times. By 1970, Hamlin was bracing for retirement while turning Oop over gradually to his longtime assistant, Graue. Their styles mesh seamlessly, even though Hamlin and Graue had become estranged over a contractual disagreement and now would work together only by mail. This splendid installment features regular characters Oop, King Guzzle, and Doc Wonmug, and a goofy-looking apeman called the Gink. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6". Dick Moores Gasoline Alley Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-11-74(Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1974). Moores' gradual inheritance of Gasoline Alley stemmed from his hiring in 1956 as an assistant to creator Frank King. Moores' 30-year tenure on the classic strip saw such high points as this example -- a character showcase for the plain-spoken junkman known as Joel. The punchline features a humiliating experience for a recurring semi-villain, the greedy developer Uriah Pert. Brilliant composition, with a dizzying high-angle first panel. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 16.5" x 5". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Excellent facial studies might suggest the rounded style of comic-book dependable Jack Sparling. Realistic rainfall effects are the result of knife-blade scratching over patches of black ink. Hasen is a treasure on two distinct fronts -- as readily identified with the Golden Age comic books' Green Lantern series, as with the heartwarming humanitarian newspaper strip, Dondi. These two examples (8-30-67 and 9-2-67) capture an essence of Dondi as the title character (a war orphan) engages in various benevolent deeds, with a sense of humor. U.S.-Canadian Superior Comics delivered not only the most bizarre and audacious horror comics of the post-WWII years, but also some of the most provocative romance titles. The Iger Studio's lead artist, Webb, was adept at these and many other genres. This collaborative page (by Webb, with the Iger assembly line) features an array of classic Webb faces, along with a surreal composition (upper left) in which the characters appear dwarfed by the furniture. Dagwood Bumstead ponders growing a beard, only to field an inarguable objection from Blondie Bumstead. Raymond (kid brother of Flash Gordon's Alex Raymond) had long since assumed the artistic lead, owing to the failed eyesight of creator Young -- whose name remained predominant. Alex Toth Witzend #10 Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Wonderful Publ., 1976).... (Total: 4 Original Art)
Alex Toth Witzend #10 Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Wonderful Publ., 1976). A fascinating back-story, here, in Toth's tale of a mysterious seagoing voyage: Underground Comix publisher Denis Kitchen had commissioned the story, "39/74," for an issue of Comix Book, Marvel Comics' semi-Underground experimental title -- seeking to mingle Underground artists with more commercially attuned talents, such as Toth. Marvel's Stan Lee, however, rejected the story. It landed in Witzend, a maverick publication that artist Wallace Wood had launched. Toth combines a deep-black line weight with delicately layered shading, achieving the look of an Old Hollywood movie. "39/74" reappeared in 2013 in the anthology The Best of Comix Book. This selection contains pages 1,2, 5, and 6 of the 10-page yarn, along with Toth's mailing envelope. Inscribed to comics historian Bill Peckmann. Ink, ink-wash, and crayon over graphite on pebbled Coquille board. Image area, 10" x 14". Light toning and marginal pin-punctures. Excellent condition.

The dynamic, eccentric page design is similarly frenzied, with a wealth of curved panel borders and split-level construction. Brilliant experimental fare, from a studio that invented many rules of the comics' visual grammar. Ink and painted white highlights over graphite on Iger Studio-brand Bristol board. Image area, 12.5" x 18". Notable age-toning and blue-line editorial markings within the panels. Very Good condition.

H.G. Peter Comic Cavalcade #29 Partial Story Page 5 Original Art (DC Comics, 1948). Peter, the definitive illustrator of the Golden Age Wonder Woman yarns, applies his distinctive storybook style to a suspenseful depiction of supporting character Etta Candy, poised to trap a villain. This lower-tier section of a Wonder Woman story, "The Machine of Schemes," is likely one of many partial-page originals that were saved from oblivion by Marvin Wolfman during a 1960s internship at DC. Marginal notes offer valuable insight into the old-school editing process at DC. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 6". Moderate toning. Tightly cropped at upper border. Very Good condition.

Jack Kirby and Mike Machlan Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #6 Page 22 "Doctor Bedlam" Illustration Original Art (DC, 1985). One of Jack Kirby's many secondary tier characters from the vast Fourth World epic, Doctor Bedlam was an evil scientist of Apokolips who specialized in inducing terror in the minds of his enemies. Note Mr. Miracle in battle mode in the background! This work was created in ink over graphite on 11" x 17" DC Bristol board, with an acetate overlay. The overlay has the paste-up text, along with lightboxed inks that were used in a red ink color hold effect on the printed page. If you look closely, you can make out some of Kirby's partly erased pencils, especially on the right side. The page is signed by Kirby in the lower right margin.

H. G. Peter Wonder Woman Unpublished Partial Page 5-B Original Art (DC, 1948/1971)....
H. G. Peter Wonder Woman Unpublished Partial Page 5-B Original Art (DC, 1948/1971). A page with a story! Created by Wonder Woman's original artist, H. G. Peter in 1938 for the story "The Stormy Menace of Goblin Head Rock" which was slated for Wonder Woman #31 (but unused), the story went unpublished until 1971's Wonder Woman #196. Even though that was the first publishing of the story, it did not include this alternate version of Page 5. So this section is still unpublished at this time. The way the page was cut between the tiers makes us think this was one of the many inventory stories that were nearly destroyed in the 1960s when DC offices were attempting to make some space. Fast thinking interns (including Marv Wolfman) followed the letter of their instructions ("cut up the art and put it in the trash") but not the intention. They cut carefully between tiers, then returned later to the trash bin to retrieve the art sections. This act allowed DC to recover the art and actually publish many of these stories in the 1970s. This page section is created in ink over graphite on two strips of Bristol board with a conjoined image area of 13" x 12". Great images of Etta Candy and the Holliday Girls in marching band costumes. Overall in Very Good condition.
