John J. Floherty Jr. Spring and the Drummer Original Art (c. 1930s)....
John J. Floherty Jr. Spring and the Drummer Original Art (c. 1930s). The versatile and prolific Floherty delivered this sprightly gag during a ferocious burst of Depression-era productivity for such magazines as The New Yorker, Collier's, and College Humor. An absent-minded tympanist mistakes the flute-player's noggin for a kettledrum. The spontaneity of the composition is perfectly served by the finishing touches of ink wash, exposed pencil under-sketching, and drybrush watercolor. Mixed media over lightweight watercolor stock. Image area, 14" x 12". The art is intact, but the paper has become brittle with age. Moderate toning, barked corners, and marginal tearing. Good condition.

Michael H. Price and Don Mangus Southern-Fried Homicide #1: "Contretemps of Court" Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (Cremo Studios, 1998). Price had witnessed this bizarre courtroom scene as a cub reporter during the 1960s. The presentation is factual, including the judge's outrageous dialogue. Humor is where one finds it, even when unintentional and couched in the regime of a corrupt provincial official (names changed to protect the innocent and/or guilty). Mangus' bold inks complete the heightened and distorted air of realism. Ink over graphite on lightweight Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Slight marginal wrinkling. Excellent condition.

Napoleon without Clifford McBride (1901-1951) carried on seamlessly when the creator's widow took over the gagwriting and hired McBride's assistant, Armstrong, to handle the art. Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Lady Killers: Erzebet Bathory Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). Bathory inspired a famous Hammer film of 1971, Countess Dracula, starring Ingrid Pitt. The art, here, is extremely larger than the miniature published version. All-American Comics Unpublished Complete 6-Page Story "The Empress, The Gold, and The Lady With The Torch" The Atom Original Art (DC, c. 1946). The Golden Age Atom, Al Pratt, is the star of this story. He had a regular running feature in All-American Comics from issue #19 up until #72. This seems to be a story prepped for the title, then shelved. Having been carefully cut between each tier of panels and then re-assembled with tape from the backside gives this story all the ear marks as being one of the ones rescued from destruction by enterprising DC interns who followed the letter of their instructions "cut up the artwork and put it in the trash", and then returned to retrieve the art from the trash later. Some of those stories were eventually published by DC in the 1970s when page counts went up and DC needed filler material. This one seems not to have been published however. Ink over graphite on Bristol board sections with a conjoined image area of 13" x 18.5" (counting the stat paste-up header). They are in Very Good condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: Charles Manson Card-Folio Portrait Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). The Great Serial Killer Trading-Card Scare of the 1990s originated with Price's three-volume set of true-crime folios, reproduced in miniature collector-card format. The much larger original portraits are well represented in this intense stipple portrait of one of the most reprehensible subjects. Price's background as a police suspect- sketch artist and courtroom portraitist serves well in this context. Ink and painted white highlights over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 14". This title is among those Western-adventure series that kept the costumed-hero tradition alive during a lull between the Golden Age and the Silver Age of superhero comics. Bolle's hallmarks are solidly in evidence: Economical, spontaneous brush-strokes and bold, heavy-black ink gravity. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 18". Frank Hill Short Ribs Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-3-75 (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1975). The so-called Energy Crisis of the 1970s inspired many cartoon gags. One of the better examples is this installment of Short Ribs, in which an indignant ruler "forgets about the shortage" when ordering a criminal boiled in oil. Frank O'Neal's creation fares well under his former assistant, Frank Hill, who had taken charge upon O'Neal's retirement in 1973. Delightfully whimsical work, here. Image area of 20" x 5". Light to moderate toning. Excellent condition.
