Terrific! CANIFF 9-9-38 TERRY & PIRATES Original, hand-drawn, one-of-a-kind art!
Special offer for USA bidders only, to encourage early bidding: If you place your first official bid on this auction (regardless of how many subsequent bids you place) before 11:59 PM Eastern Time on Sunday, February 18, and end up winning the auction, I will pay for the USPS Priority Mail shipping charges. Otherwise, you will be responsible for paying these shipping charges. This auction is for the original, hand-drawn, one-of-a-kind artwork by Milton Caniff for his classic Terry & the Pirates comic strip of September 9, 1938--eighty years ago this year! This awesome artwork prominently features the title character, Terry Lee and his cohort, Pat Ryan, in an awesome panel four, along with secondary character, villain Drusilla Crail, in the first two panels. Strips from this period with Caniff's blue wash indicating where he would like the printer to apply shading to the artwork are highly desirable, especially when Terry himself is featured, along with Pat. The artwork has been numbered by Caniff in the upper left margin with number 5, indicating it is the fifth strip of the week. He has titled it "Wall Ears" in the upper right margin. The margins also have a printer's stamp in the far right. The art board's Elarco stamp is visible in the lower left margin. The first three panels show Drusilla being told her fate by her captor, as Pat and Terry eavesdrop on that conversation in the final panel. Caniff's stylish artwork abounds in this strip! The artwork is in excellent condition, especially for an eight year old comic strip! India ink on three-ply Strathmore art board, with blue water color wash. The art board is off-white in color, with no folds or creases, the ink and wash have not faded. There are no paste-overs or white ink/white out corrections. There are several spots where Caniff used his typical technique of fine tuning some of his ink lines with a razor blade. The corners show rounding or dinging. The syndicate's copyright strip is still firmly attached in the third panel. The entire art board measures 23" wide by 7 1/8" high. The image area is 20" wide and 5 1/2" high. The artwork has staining from the printing process in the lower margin of the first three panels, but it does not enter into the image area. This staining is very common on Caniff's strips from this period and is the result of the engraver's process for applying shading to the areas where Caniff has indicated he wanted it by his blue wash. This strip actually has a piece of shading still loosely attached in the lower right corner of the fourth panel--I have never seen this before. I will pack the artwork to try to protect it, but I should caution that the shading is so loosely attached that it may come off during shipment (which I cannot prevent nor be held responsible for). If that is the case, be sure to retrieve the piece of shading from the packaging, in case you wish to try to re-apply it or just save it. If the stains bother you, you can mat them out, if you intend to frame the strip. I have also been told you can have these stains professionally removed by an archivist. However, I can't say for sure, because I have never attempted this, being content with the artwork as is. There are tack holes in the upper corners, where Caniff attached the art board to his drawing board. The back of the art board appears to have the pencil written number 400 on it and the syndicate's mail room stamp showing it arrived in the engraving room on August 16, 1938, roughly three weeks before the strip appeared in print. Judge the condition of this strip for yourself--I have included multiple high resolution color scans of the artwork in its entirety. Please note: this comic strip is too long (22 1/2 " wide) to fit on even my oversized scanner, so the scans were done in sections, however, the actual artwork is all in one piece. Milton Caniff is considered to be one of the greatest and most influential cartoonists of all time. His artwork is highly desired by collectors, especially his work on Terry & the Pirates. This particular strip is from his peak period of Terry & the Pirates, and is even more desirable due to the beautiful blue wash and the presence of title character Terry Lee and Pat Ryan. I am a serious comic art collector. The only reason I am selling this terrific artwork is because I am "thinning the herd," as my collection has grown too large. This particular piece has been in my collection for over ten years. You can bid with confidence, due to my extensive eBay transaction history and 100% positive feedback. The only accepted form of payment is PayPal. Payment in full is due within three days of the end of this auction, unless prior arrangements have been mutually agreed upon at least 24 hours before the end of the auction. I will accept returns only if I have made a significant error in my item description. Returns will not be accepted for buyer's remorse. Advance arrangements must be made with me prior to making a return and the item must be returned in the exact same condition it was when it left my hands within three days of delivery to buyer. If you are outside of the USA, shipping is handled by eBay's Global Shipping Program and is out of my hands. Please do not ask me to change customs forms or otherwise bypass that program. I will securely pack the artwork in sealed plastic within firm cardboard and promptly ship it to you via USPS Priority Mail (including tracking service) upon receipt of your payment. Good luck bidding!
