Gould - DICK TRACY Daily, LIPSY (02/23/1976) NO RESERVE!
Chester Gould
Chester Gould DICK TRACY LIPSY Original Daily Strip Art (02/23/1976) NO RESERVE! "Chester Gould is the creator of 'Dick Tracy' (1931), the world's most famous detective since 'Sherlock Holmes'. For 46 years, Gould captivated newspaper readers with his clever mix of suspense, grotesque villains, explicit violence, melodrama and well-documented use of scientific research methods. 'Dick Tracy' was the first newspaper comic strip with a more realistic approach. Its hard-boiled portrayal of violence and well-documented depiction of actual crime-investigating methods made it one of the most popular and influential comics of all time. Gould managed to capture the zeitgeist of the 1930s and 1940s and inspired many film noir stories set in the same time period. He was also a memorable caricaturist, particularly when creating his unforgettable ugly gangsters. Gould proved that comics could tell more mature stories with cliffhangers that kept readers looking out for the next episode. Countless daily, weekly and monthly serialized comics series have followed his path since." ~ Lambiek art area: 5" h x 17" w

Overgard - STEVE ROPER Daily (05/25/??) NO RESERVE!
William Thomas Overgard
William Thomas Overgard - STEVE ROPER Original Daily Strip Art (05/25/??) NO RESERVE! "William Thomas Overgard found his way to comics through the work of Milton Caniff. Overgard and Caniff started a longtime relationship, starting when Overgard wrote Caniff a fan letter at age twelve. Overgard joined the Navy for two years, but kept sending his artwork to Caniff, who gave him tips and encouragement. After the War, Caniff introduced him to the field, and Overgard started out working for Lev Gleason publishers under Charles Biro. //There he cooperated on titles such as 'Daredevil', 'Boy' and the 'Black Diamond' western series. He continued his activities at Western Publishing with 'Jungle Jim' and 'Ben Bowie', among others. In the early 1950s, Bill Overgard ghosted Caniff's 'Steve Canyon' strip for a while. // Afterwards, Overgard contributed many comics to syndicates like United Features. In 1952 he was contacted by Publishers Newspaper Syndicate to take over the 'Steve Roper' series. Overgard accepted and he drew the series until 1982, giving it new popularity. // After his run on 'Steve Roper', Overgard took on 'Rudy' (1984), a gag series about a talking gorilla, which lasted for only a year. In 1971, he had already succeeded Allen Saunders as the writer of 'Kerry Drake' (art by Alfred Andriola). William Overgard is additionally the author of novels like 'Pieces of a Hero' and 'Moonlight Surveillance'. An image from a 1961 'Steve Roper' story was used by pop-art painter Roy Lichtenstein for his 1961 painting 'I Can See The Whole Room ... And There's Nobody In It!)'." ~ lambiek.net art area: 5¾" h x 18½" w

Michael Kaluta
Michael Kaluta AMAZING STORIES 893-5, Page 37 Interior illustration (1970) NO RESERVE! "Michael Kaluta got his first influence from 1950s TV art instructor Jon Gnagy. Born in Guatemala, Kaluta studied Fine Arts and began illustration and comic book work against advice of his instructors. After publishing in fanzines like Spafon, he did his first comic book work for Charlton Comics in 1969, published in titles like Teen Confessions, Great Battles of History and Outlaws of the West. Kaluta created an impressive number of comic book covers for both Marvel and DC. Some of them include 'House of Mystery', 'Batman', 'Conan the King' and 'Vampirella'. [p] In 1972, DC Comics revived 'The Shadow' and Kaluta got to re-create this character. He also illustrated stories with E.R. Burroughs' 'Carson of Venus' as back-ups in Korak, Son of Tarzan. Kaluta began drawing the 'Starstruck' comic series, written by Elaine Lee, in Heavy Metall in 1982. Most recently, he did a long run of cover designs for DC's 'The Books of Magic'. Kaluta is currently working in digital media, designing characters and environments for several video games." ~ Lambiek art area: 9" h x 3" w
