This is the Signed original Gouache painting by G W Backhouse.

The white rhinoceros or square-lipped rhinoceros is the largest extant species of rhinoceros. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species.

Left alone they are timid animals but when provoked they run at high speed for a beast that can weigh as much as 3 tonnes.

A very in-the-moment piece of Look and Learn artwork, painted by G W Backhouse for issue 36, published 22nd September 1962.

Old 'Blacknose' Strikes to Kill. A fictionalised account of an encounter between these two famous adversaries, reminiscent of a similar encounter described in the short story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling.

A very early Backhouse Look and Learn painting for Look and Learn no. 39 (13 October 1962). Also unusual is that this has a clear prominent signature by the artist. The artwork was later re-used in the book Wonders of Nature published in 1969.

This is the original Mixed Media art by Ralph Bruce.

A bizarre true story from World War One. Trooper Patrick Fowler found himself behind enemy lines when his horse was shot from under him. He was eventual rescued by locals and lived for four years in a lady's house in Bertry.

Unfortunately for him eight German soldiers were billeted in the house and so Fowler spent most of his time hiding in a cupboard. On one occasion a nosey dog almost gave the game away.

When British troops arrived in 1918 the sickened and half starved Fowler was originally arrested for desertion before being recognised by his former officer. The cabinet he lived in for years now resides in the Imperial War Museum.

The Cougar or Mountain Lion or Puma as it is more widely known in parts of Latin America. In fact, although a dangerous hunter of other animals, in Argentina it is known as "The Christian's Friend" because of it's supposed indifference to attacking people. Horse and deer are entirely a different matter.

Great Quests: The Long Road to Timbuktu. Explorers set out for Timbuktu in Africa whilst braving the tropical heat in clothing only suitable for Britain.

Explorers from Europe searched for a fantastic and wealthy city populated by an undiscovered race; only to find that Timbuktu was little more than a trading post on a slave route who's glory days were a long time in the past.

One day a fairy overhears a miserable Gnome called Henry who wishes he was a King and his humble tree house a palace. And suddenly he is and it is; but little did he know what hard work it was being King and soon the Gnome wishes things were as they were before, social order is restored and the poor Gnome is a happy man again. A lesson for us all.

This is the first page of the story originally printed as page 12 of Once Upon A Time issue 117, 8th May 1971.

This is the original Gouache painting by Harry Green.

A scientist studies the skull of the alleged Piltdown Man. In 1912, the amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson claimed that he had discovered the "missing link" between ape and man.

In fact pieces had been glued together from some teeth and the lower jaw of an orang-utan and a small human skull. The hoax was not discovered until 1953.

This is the Signed original Gouache painting by K A Evans.

The SS Great Britain, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, although a very advanced ship for it's time, also had a very chequered history. It was hoped that the ship would be rescued from where she was scuttled in the Falkland Islands.

The very next year Sir Jack Hayward fronted the money to do just that and the ship was returned to Bristol to act as a museum, the port she had been built in 127 years earlier.

This is explained in the feature printed in Look and Learn issue 374, 15th March 1969.

Four coats of arms that appeared as part of the cover to the Look and Learn Book 1970. Inside there was a feature explaining all the heraldic devices. Only three of the designs have been identified.

That of top left is unknown.

Top right are the arms of Arthur Wellesley - Duke of Wellington.

Lower left are those of Sir Christopher Wren and another artist William Morris is represented lower right.

Dan Escott's expertise in this field is evident and although re-mounted on board (done at the time for the book cover) the art is in perfect condition.

The kidnapped Gudrun having refused to marry Hartmut is forced to work as a servant by Hartmut's mother for twelve years. A mermaid disguised as a swan tells her that her grown brother Ortwine and her betrothed Herwig are on their way to rescue her.

After they meet Gudrun informs Hartmut's mother that she wants to be treated like a princess. Gerlinda wrongly assumes that Gudrun has finally decided to marry her son. More bizarre plot twists next week!

A fine clean board by Ron Embleton with muted colours except the fire for emphasis in the last panel.

Hearing that his father was going on a visit to a duke who employed fine musicians, Handel followed the coach and demanded a lift.

Subsequently, he impressed the duke who helped him with his musical career. This was not without its stormy moments, one of which led to a duel between Handel and another composer.

This is the Signed original Gouache painting by John J Arnold.

Henry Grace à Dieu ("Henry, Thanks be to God"), also known as Great Harry, was an English carrack or "great ship" of the King's Fleet in the 16th century.

Contemporary with the Mary Rose, Henry Grace à Dieu was even larger being Henry VIII's flagship. She had a large forecastle four decks high, and a stern castle two decks high. She was 50 m long, weighing 1,500 tons and having a complement of 700 - 1,000 men. It is thought that she was ordered by Henry VIII in response to construction of the Scottish ship Michael, launched in 1511.

Gudrun having been kidnapped for twelve years is rescued from the Normans by her brother Ortwine and her betrothed Herwig. They slay the wicked old Queen and leave Hartmut to his grief.

A fine board slightly marred by small brown spots of spilled paint. The central duo-colour panel by Ron Embleton is very fine.

Henry Segrave was the first man to break the 200mph barrier. Segrave, who set three land and one water record, was the first person to hold both titles simultaneously and the first person to travel at over 200 miles per hour (320 km/h) in a land vehicle.

He died in an accident in 1930 shortly after setting a new world water speed record on Windermere in the Lake District, England. The Segrave Trophy was established to commemorate his life.

Hartmund of Normandy kidnaps Gudrun he is persuade by her father Hettel and Herwig who was betrothed to Gudrun. There is a tremendous day long battle towards the end of which Hettel is slain.

When his body has been returned home his widow declares no more fighting for a generation despite her daughter still languishing in Normandy.

This is a lovely clean board with excellent action scenes by Ron Embleton, the restrained colours, especially in the opening panel are a delight.

Note all panels have been remounted and panels 2 and 5 have a crack / tear down them thus the low asking price. The first panel with the large griffon is however classic Ron Embleton.

King Charles I and William Harvey discussing the heart and what to have for dinner. Note that the art was cropped so that the figure on the top left has head outside the panel also damaged / missing board to top and lower right. Nevertheless a wonderful character study by Ron Embleton.

Harvey was an English physician who made seminal contributions in anatomy and physiology. He was the first known physician to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood being pumped to the brain and body by the heart. He also investigated several cases of alleged Witchcraft for the King who's private physician he was.

The original publication was possibly in Treasure rather than Look and Learn.

The largest cannon ever made was built in service of Sultan Mehmet II and used in the siege of Constantinople in 1453. This beast could only fire seven shots in a day but each load was said to be about 600 kilograms and landed with the shattering force of an earthquake.

Even the famous double walls of the city could not withstand such a battering.

This is the original Gouache painting by Graham Coton.

Despite inventing the sewing machine, Elias Howe nearly died in penury, in fact his wife died of malnutrition as other people made money on the back of his success. It was only when he managed to patent the device that he secured a lasting income.

Graham Coton's painting shows an early version of the machine being tested for speed against a group of seamstresses. Elias Howe won that competition by a clear half hour.

Original artwork from The Look and Learn Book 1981, although originally created for issue 504 of the weekly magazine, 11th September 1971.

This adaptation was probably published in Once Upon A Time.

Segestes and his Daughter

This is the original Gouache painting by F R Exell.

Segestes was a German who had been educated in Rome and was sent back to Germany to serve under the brutal governor Varus. Segestes told Varus several times that another German born Roman military leader Arminius was a traitor. Arminius did rebel and fought many actions again Varus and later Germanicus.

He earned Segestes personal hatred by getting Segestes daughter to elope with him. In this painting we see Segestes capturing his own daughter after the defeat of Arminius' troops.

A conflation of The Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower as depicted in the comic Treasure, page 3 of the 13th May 1965 issue. Both of course were built by Gustave Eiffel (although Liberty was designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi).

Very unusual subject matter for Henry Fox who is better known for his Brer Rabbit stories that appeared in Once Upon A Time a few years later. Please note there is glue residue above Liberty from an old text box. This condition is reflected in the asking price.
