Ronald Wilkins Chance Encounters Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 3 (c. 1980s). Cleverly written and drawn in an unusual heavy-ink style, these examples come from a fairly extensive series of undocumented publishing pedigree. (Approximately 100 such daily/Sunday episodes are known to exist in private collections.) Wilkins relates the story of a Star Trek-like expedition and its meeting with a group of women from some other planet. The three pieces in this selection contain two strips each. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17.5" x 12.5". Light toning, and scattered loosening of typeset dialogue paste-ups. Very Good condition.

The caption at the bottom read, "In Africa they are called the Walking ingos...". Crafted in marker over graphite on Bristol board with an image area 9" x 12". The page is toned with some glue residue in the bottom margin from a missing paste-up. Overall, in Very Good condition. Also included is a rough thumbnail sketch of a young girl surrounded by foliage crafted in ink measuring 2.5" x 3.25" on paper. Slightly toned. In Excellent condition.

Ronald Wilkins Chance Encounters #002 Sunday Comic Strip Original Art Group of 2 (c. 1980s). Wilkins relates the story of a Star Trek-like expedition and its meeting with a group of women from some other planet. The pieces in this selection contain two strips. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with image areas 17.5" x 12.5" and 23.75" x 11.5". Color guide vellum overlays are included. Light toning, and scattered loosening of typeset dialogue paste-ups. Very Good condition.

A.E. Hayward and Others Somebody's Stenog and One Additional Strip Original Art Group of 2 with Sunday Comics Tearsheet (1930-49). Hayward's pioneering strip offers a Christmas-season gag (12-25-30), with the bonus of a self-caricature at the end. A fine additional piece is a 1949 installment of Douglas Rodgers' The Friscoes, a local-interest strip that appeared in the San Francisco Progress. The strips are composed in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, approx. 20" x 6". Light to moderate toning. Excellent condition. A nice additional touch are two Sunday-funnies tearsheets from 1-12-30 and 2-23-30, featuring Merely Margy, a Jazz Age strip by cartoonist John Held Jr.

Mutt's sure that he can be as reasonably deductive as the great detective, but the circumstances of Jeff's disheveled looks are eluding him. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 29" x 8.5". Signed by Fisher in the last panel. Slight toning, edge wear, and a crease in the top margin; otherwise, in Very Good condition. Remarkable, given the strip's age!

Try telling that to a vigilante posse, though: "Masked men don't rescue people!" A scenic beauty, built around a central panorama with plenty of hard riding and gunplay. This episode of the historical feature depicts the U.S. assault upon Confederate Fort Henry during the Civil War. At around the time of this episode, Fletcher also was settling in as assistant artist on Dick Tracy, later to become that feature's lead illustrator. Image area, 26" x 11.75". Ed Gamble, John Jensen, Bill Deore, and Others - US Presidents in Editorial Cartoons Original Art and a Print Group of 5 (various). Wonderful presidential caricatures by some of the nation's top editorial cartoonists. The oldest is a print of a cartoon by Ron Lewis that features President Dwight D. Eisenhower getting second-guessed by a not-yet-President Richard Nixon. It measures 14" x 11" and is dated 3-26-60. Next is an image by Ken Alexander of President Gerald Ford pedaling the Presidency created in ink and Zipatone on Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 8". President Ford was followed by President Jimmy Carter, and so we we a cartoon by Bill Deore of President Carter selling off parts of the Social Security program. It was created in ink over blue pencil on Duotone board with an image area of 11.5" x 9", and is dated 8-4-77. The largest and most colorful piece was created by John Jensen as a cover for NOW magazine that features President Ronald Reagan and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The work is ink and Conte crayon over graphite with bright, vivid watercolor paint on art paper with an image area of 16.5" x 12". There is a text correction paste-up on this one. Lastly, there is a nice piece by Ed Gamble of President George H. W. Bush created in ink on the back of a 5" x 8" index card with an image area of 3" x 6". These are in Excellent condition. Fontaine Fox Toonerville Folks Daily Comic Strip and Additional Sketch Original Art Group of 2 (McNaught Syndicate, c. 1930s). An unusual brush with politics distinguishes this cartoon from Louisville, KY's most famous cartoonist. Fox's 'toons about a ramshackle trolley usually stuck with gags for their own sake, but here he squeezes in a reference to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The upper caption contains the strip's seldom-used alternative title: The Toonerville Trolley That Meets All the Trains. An accompanying miniature pencil-sketch (wrinkled and stained) depicts the trolley's conductor. The inscribed strip-panel itself is rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9.5" x 11". Pronounced age-toning and spot-staining. Good condition.

Vic Forsythe, John Dirks and Others - Jimmy and the Tiger, Captain and the Kids and Other Comic Strips Original Art Group of 6 (various, 1935-2004). Vic Forsythe created Joe Jinks in 1818 (originally titled Joe's Car), and he produced it until 1933. After leaving that strip, he created Jimmy and the Tiger. This Sunday is from 10-6-35 and due to soiling, toning, and wear is in Good condition. The John Dirks' Captain and the Kids Sunday is from 2-9-69. It is in Excellent condition. Both of these Sundays measure approximately 22" x 16". Mort Leav Fight Comics #54 Story Page 2 Kayo Kirby Original Art (Fiction House, 1942). From the earlier years of Fiction House -- so early in the game that studio boss Jerry Iger is still using the Eisner & Iger trademark (upper right), well after co-founder Will Eisner had gone solo. Leav was one of many new-to-the-game comic-book artists who made up the visual grammar of the idiom as they went along. Here, he experiments with extreme angles and tense body language in pitting prizefighter Kayo Kirby against an opponent with "a lightning right." Accompanied by a set of color-photocopy pages from an original printing. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.25" x 18". Light-to-moderate toning, with painted white art corrections, and blue pencil color call-outs. In Excellent condition.

Neal Adams' original graphite and ink rough page layout designs for four of the pages from the Elliot S! Maggin penned Green Arrow backup tale "What Can One Man Do?" This issue was part of the historic "Hard Traveling Heroes" story arc that helped bring DC out of the campy 1960s into the swingin' 1970s. It was part of DC's plan to get "relevant" to the work their readers lived in. All four pre-lim pages were created on a single sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper. Pinholes in the corners. Nofziger, a versatile mimic, worked on many features besides his own titles. Here, he and inker Henderson channel the style of Lulu comic-book masters John Stanley and Irving Tripp, although the signature shows the nickname of Lulu's creator, Marjorie Henderson Buell. (She never worked on the comics spinoffs.) The gag offers a classic depiction of Lulu Moppet's chief annoyance, Tubby Tompkins. Ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board.
