Jim Starlin and Chic Stone Captain Marvel #25 Story Page 5 Original Art (Marvel, 1973). From Jim Starlin's first issue on Captain Marvel. Jim Starlin and Mar-Vell are almost as linked in the minds of fans as Mar-Vell and Rick Jones. On this page, the "Masterlord" referred to in Panel 1 is none other than the mad god of Titan, Thanos. The Professor shot in the top tier is the father of Rick Jones' girlfriend... the very man Mar-Vell and Rick are racing to see! As was common for this story, there is a running conversation between Mar-Vell and Rick Jones, with one of them (Jones this time) stuck in the Negative Zone, appearing only as a disembodied head... a classic device of this beloved book. The page was created in ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The lightly toned page has production tape residue in the margins and just into the image areas on the sides. There is also a bit of production oil stain in the lower right corner. George Pérez Avengers/JLA #4 Double Page Spread 28-29 Original Art (DC, 2003).... (Total: 2)
George Pérez Avengers/JLA #4 Double Page Spread 28-29 Original Art (DC, 2003). A staggering and mind-boggling two-page spread of heroes and villains the likes of which comics have rarely seen! Due to the shifting reality of the battlescape in this Kurt Busiek penned tale, heroes and/or their costumes would change from page-to-page. But where else are you going to see Superman using Captain America's shield? Or the Falcon, Hawkwoman, and Black Condor all swooping into action together? Or Fire, Firestar, Firebird, and Ice all teaming up against Captain Cold, Blizzard, Icicle, Killer Frost, and Firebug? There are over 66 characters on this spread (honestly, we lost count)! Created in ink over graphite on two separate sheets of bright white Marvel Bristol board with a combined image area of 20.5" x 15.75". In Excellent condition. Note: As the title for this series switched top-billing, some issues were titled JLA/Avengers instead.

George Herriman Krazy Kat Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-25-17 (King Features Syndicate, 1917). This krazy duo puts the "Fun" in dis-fun-chul. A bit of a Groundhog's Day syndrome, as Ignatz starts his day, only to start the next day the exact same way in this Sunday titled "Krazy Kat, Thy Doom Impends". George Herriman had a knack for not only filling his comic strip version of Coconino County (and it's off-center inhabitants) with a surreal wackiness, but he also could slip in a bit of real characterization when you were not looking. It's obvious that Krazy Kat really and truly loves Ignatz. Also of note... the rarely seen Kolin Kelly (provider of Ignatz endless brick supply) is actually seen twice in this strip! Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with a matted image area of 18.5" x 21.5". The piece is glass front framed to 25.5" x 28.5". Signed by Herriman in the lower edge of the image area. Gary Larson Far Side Daily Comic Strip Gag Panel Original Art dated 9-1-83 (Chronicle Features, 1983). Mathematicians at the beach. Oh, the girls love a man with a big theorem. Gary Larson's delightfully sideways view of life made this strip a classic with a huge following. Original art from this series is about as rare as warthog feathers. In fact, this piece was one of the few that appeared in (and was sold at) the Jane Haslem Gallery exhibition in 1984. There is a photocopy of the original signed Letter of Appraisal from that exhibition on the reverse side of the frame. Bill Ward Breezy #18 February-1957 Single Panel Gag Illustration Original Art (Timely Features/Humorama, 1957). "You're right, honey, when it comes to knowing what's on a guy's mind, I gotta hand it to you!" Bill Ward women are created out of high heels, hose, platinum hair, and lots and lots of curves! The gag panel was later reprinted in the March 1964 issue of Zip. It was rendered in ink over graphite with white paint highlights on onionskin paper. The 16.5" x 22.5" paper was then affixed to a 18.5" x 24.5" sheet of Bristol board with production tape. There are numerous notes in the margins, possibly changing the punchline from one appearance to the other. Of note, the marginal notation on the upper right says "take out hairbrush". Sure enough, if you look in the man's hand, you can see he was originally using a hairbrush as a paddle. The art has toned, and has several stain spots on it. In Very Good condition.

Charles Schulz Peanuts Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-20-53 (United Feature Syndicate, 1953). Snoopy really gets Charlie Brown's goat in this hilariously memorable, and extremely early Sunday strip (the strip began in 1952). Schulz quickly transformed neighborhood puppy, Snoopy, from a supporting player into a major character in his own right, with an unforgettable personality unique to the medium. In time, Snoopy's thoughts would be revealed through thought balloons, but here, it's simply his playful expressions and poses that are so wonderful. Snoopy hogs the spotlight in every panel of this delightful example, and Violet even makes an appearance in the last panel. This particular strip was inscribed and signed by Schulz (as "Sparky"), to noted comics historian Rick Marschall. The art features an ink over graphite on Bristol board image area measuring approximately 22.5" x 15.25", and is in Very Good condition, with overall toning and some discoloring to the paste-up trade dressing in the title panel. If you've been holding out to win a great early Peanuts original, here is your moment of triumph!

Nick Cardy and Luis Dominguez Witching Hour #60 Cover Original Art Group of 2 (DC, 1970/1975... (Total: 2)
Nick Cardy and Luis Dominguez Witching Hour #60 Cover Original Art Group of 2 (DC, 1970/1975). This is a tale of two covers... that are actually one cover! In 1970, Nick Cardy created the original cover design and it was held by DC as an inventory cover piece from 9-30-70 until it was used on this November 1975 cover. There are five inventory stamps at the bottom of the art, each with a different year date. In 1975; however, someone decided that cover wasn't "spooky" enough, so a stat of the Cardy art was made, then the Halloween masks were replaced with an all-new piece of original art by Luis Dominguez (the skeleton figure), as seen on the second version included in this group. A note at the top of that second cover reads "Att: Jack Adler, combine art as discussed". The all-Cardy cover was created in ink over blue pencil, the header and logo are stats, and the image area is 10" x 15". It is signed by Cardy on the left center of the image area. The Cardy/Dominguez cover features a Dominguez original art skull and skeletal hand, created in ink over graphite. It is signed "LD" in the lower center of the image area. The rest of that cover is a series of paste-up stats with an image area of 9.75" x 15". Both are on Sparta Bristol board and are lightly toned. These make a wonderful display together. In Excellent condition.

John Romita Sr. Amazing Spider-Man #60 Cover Kingpin Original Art (Marvel, 1968)....
John Romita Sr. Amazing Spider-Man #60 Cover Kingpin Original Art (Marvel, 1968). One of the most bold and striking Amazing Spider-Man covers of all-time! And considering all of the tremendous covers on this long-running title, that is really saying something. Wilson Fisk (aka The Kingpin) was one of Spidey's most dangerous foes, not only because of his Machiavellian machinations and control of the criminal underworld, but also because of his raw power and sheer physical brutality! This image easily conveys the latter of that equation. An impressive piece that is as big and bold as the Kingpin himself... created larger-than-twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13.5" x 20". The corner box, logo, CCA stamp, and lower text are all stat paste-up. The board around Spidey's upper torso was slit to allow the logo stat to slide behind it, then it was affixed by production tape on the reverse side. There is also production tape in the margins, and holding on many of the paste-up stats (some of which have discolored). The Bristol board has been trimmed closely to the image area. Signed by Romita Sr. in the image area. In Very Good condition.

Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip #214 Original Art dated 3-16-41 (King Features Syndicate, 1941). A stunning seafaring panel highlights this early example. We have offered just five earlier full Prince Valiant Sundays in our seventeen years of auctions. Foster signed the art and inscribed it "To my friend in Mexico, Ramos [sic] Valdiosera Berman." Ramón Valdiosera Berman, who passed away in 2017, was the founder of a Mexican association of comic book artists, "Artistas Unidos," and decades later founded an art school in Mexico City, the Academia de Arte Secuencial. He sought out Foster in Evanston, IL in the 1940s and befriended his fellow artist. Foster gave his blessing to the idea of a "Prince Valiant as a child" character which became the Mexican comic character Medio Litro. The art is rendered in ink over graphite on two pieces of board with a combined image area of 26" x 34". Chunks missing outside the image area. One 4" and one 2" tear in the second-to-last panel. Frank Thorne Savage Sword of Conan #29 Story Page 15 Red Sonja Original Art (Marvel, 1978). Five times the Red Sonja! This story is a bit of comic industry history. In the 1970's Frank Thorne developed a persona known as "The Wizard", which he used to judge Red Sonja look-alike cosplay contests at comic book conventions. This developed into a bit of an act known as "The Wizard and Red Sonja Show". This last page of the comic story of the same name features all five of the real-life Red Sonja cosplayers who were part of this act. In the top panel, from left to right, they are: Linda Behrle, Angelique Trouvere, Dianne De Kelb, Wendy Snow, and Wendy Pini. There are some lovely pages in this issue that were made all the more lovely by a color-hold process overlay. Those overlays are included as well (created in ink on vellum). The art pages were created in ink (with some red ink key lines) over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Page 1 has a paste-up indicia and one caption paste-up. The logo on the title/Splash page is a stat paste-up. Overall the pages are in Excellent condition.

Jim Aparo Ghostly Tales #76 Cover Original Art (Charlton, 1969). This is just the second Charlton cover by Aparo that Heritage has offered in our 13 years of holding comic art auctions! Here, the artist used an unusual "multi-panel" format. And we also get a shot of that genial host, Mr. Dedd. This piece has an image area of 9.5" x 14.5". There's a one-inch cut at top center, the logo and box art are stat paste-up, a couple of pinholes in the corners, glue residue in the image area, paper abrasions in the margins, and some white-out outside the image area. There's also a diagonal pencil line through the entire image. Very Good condition. From the Gary Arlington Collection.

Hal Foster Prince Valiant #1696 Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-10-69 (King Features Syndicate, 1969). Hal Foster could put more detail and linework in a single panel than some artists did in an entire strip! Check out Panel 4 to see what we mean. His incredibly meticulous detail was partially due to the enormous scale at which he worked. It allowed him to cut loose and really show what a master draftsman he was. This Sunday was created on three sections of Bristol board, each as big as your average Sunday, by itself! Created in ink over graphite with a combined image area of approximately 22.75" x 34". The toned boards have been conjoined with tape on the reverse side. The logo is a toned paste-up, and all text is paste-up. These have discolored and there is glue residue around the edges. Of note, the "Chester Ghoul" mentioned in Panel 1 is a pointed parody of Chester Gould, creator/artist for Dick Tracy. Capp took several potshots at Gould over the years, including creating a comic strip-within-a-comic strip for Li'l Abner to read... Fearless Fosdick, a parody of Dick Tracy. Harold Gray Little Orphan Annie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 1927 (Chicago Tribune, 1927). Older Little Orphan Annie original art is rare for a reason -- almost every existing original resides permanently at Boston University. Enric (Enrique Torres-Prat) Vampirella #40 Cover Painting Original Art (Warren, 1975). This stark and foreboding cover painting graced the "Super Special Christmas Holiday Issue". We feel all festive just looking at it. Enric turned out an amazing amount of fully painted covers for this title, and it would be near-impossible to pick one as "the best"... although this one is high on most fans' lists. Crafted in oil on loose canvas with a matted image area of 14.5" x 19.5". It is glass front framed to 24.5" x 29.5" in a handsome frame. In Excellent condition.

Mike Zeck Punisher #1 Cover Recreation Original Art (2000). This is the only re-creation Zeck ever did of this iconic cover, and just the fourth cover re-creation of of any kind that he ever produced; hence, the notation above his signature on the back of the piece. A print of this piece of art is one of the top-sellers for Zeck at convention appearances. The 1986 five-issue Punisher mini-series pre-dated the Punisher's regular title and featured Phil Zimelman's painting over Zeck's pencils. The re-creation is all Zeck. It was also the first appearance of the Punisher's Battle Van, and in addition, this is where he started to verbally dictate his "Punisher War Journal". (This was a technique used to avoid giving him thought balloons.) Marvelously rendered by the amazing team of Andru-Esposito in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Jack Kirby and Chic Stone X-Men #8 "The Beast" Pin-Up Illustration Original Art (Marvel, 1964). It's an X-Men X-Tra! This is the largest image of Hank McCoy, the bouncing Beast, that we have ever seen. Truly stunning! Pin-up pages such as this are fondly remembered by many merry Marvelites. And as impressive as this one was in the comic book, it is positively mind-blowing at twice-up scale in the original black and white art! So much of Kirby's masterful pencils were simply lost in print due to the limited quality of the newsprint format. But it's all here, big, bold, and beautiful, on this piece created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18.5". There is a staple in the top margin. Robert Crumb R. Crumb Comics Limited Edition Folio Artist Proof #X/X with Sketch Original Art (Gingko Press, 1992). Although Fritz the Cat is Robert Crumb's best-known comics character, probably the one he drew most often was none other then himself. That's what makes this slim, oversized volume featuring three 1989 short stories so interesting: on the rear colophon page, Crumb has added a full-figure inked 5" x 5.5" sketch of himself, nude but demurely posed, with word balloons saying "That's Me!" and "Hi Girls" (Crumb is ever the ladies man), dated 1992. Stories are "The Story of My Life", "People... Ya Gotta Love "Em", and "I'm Grateful, I'm Grateful!". Book is 11.25" x 14.25" hardcover with cloth binding with pasted-on title, and comes with a slipcase. Minor handling; overall Excellent condition.

John Buscema Conan the Barbarian Annual #7 Unused Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1982). Extremely similar to the final cover, this seems most likely a "first attempt", although it us unclear why it was not used. This version is every bit as dynamic, powerful, and exciting at the published cover. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 15". There is a recreation logo/header on a flip-up acetate section at the top. The original art has a horizontal crease through the middle, and pinholes in the top. The reverse side of the art hides a wonderful secret... eight rough graphite images, most partially inked, by John Buscema himself! A keen look behind the curtain at his artist genius. The cover is in Very Good condition with high eye-appeal.

Gary Larson Far Side Daily Comic Strip Gag Panel Original Art dated 4-7-83 (Chronicle Features, 1983). "First pants, THEN your shoes" Someone is having "one of those mornings". Larson's wonderful weirdness brightened every reader's mornings from 1979 to 1995. Any and all original art from this series is considered rare, and well-sought after by his fans. This piece is one of the few that were exhibited and sold in the 1984 Jane Haslem Gallery showing. There is a signed Letter of Appraisal from that showing on the reverse on the frame, listing this piece and three others. The original asking-price of only $200 would be a huge bargain these days, as a strip from 1983 recently sold for over $30,000 at a Heritage Auction. Created in ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 6.25" x 8". Glass front framed to 13.25" x 16.25". In Excellent condition.

Mark Bagley and Joe Rubinstein Spider-Man #26 Splash Page 30 Original Art (Marvel, 1992). The last page of the story "With Great Responsibility" features a stunning splash page image of Spider-Man, with a small nod to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the graffiti in the lower part of the image area. Created in ink over graphite on Marvel Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The word balloon is a stat paste-up. The lines in the cloud were created using a technique where full lines are drawn, then they are scratched at intervals to create the "broken line" effect. These abrasions in the surface paper have discolored and become more visible. The same is true of the area in the lower right. There are residue stains in the lower image area as well. Signed by Mark Bagley in the lower margin; however, that signature has faded so much that is is almost gone. The piece us UV glass front framed to 15" x 21". In Very Good condition.
