Harry O'Neill Broncho Bill Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-27-42 (United Feature Syndicate, 1942). Woof! What a great episode this one is! Thrilling and suspenseful, with typically rich characterizations. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.5" x 13". Don Lomax Equipment World/Safety Watch Original Art Group of 10 (c. 1990s-2000s). There is so much more than Vietnam Journal (his best-known work) to Lomax's artistry. Edward Frank Mack (as Ed Mack) Willie Push Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst Newspapers, 1914)....
Edward Frank Mack (as Ed Mack) Willie Push Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst Newspapers, 1914). If Mack's signed work resembles Bud Fisher's Mutt and Jeff, that's because Mack spent more time ghosting the Fisher strip -- both as a substitute, while Fisher was estranged from one syndicate, and as a formal assistant after Fisher had reclaimed the trademark and moved it to Hearst. Mack excelled on his own, additionally, especially with Willie Push, an upbeat portrayal of a hard-working salesman. As pun-titles go, Willie Push is right up there with Franklin Collier's signature character, Otto Grow. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with light watercolor tinting. Image area, 13.5" x 5". Backed corners and moderate toning. Very Good condition.

Zack Mosley Smilin' Jack Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-30-50 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1950)....
Zack Mosley Smilin' Jack Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-30-50 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1950). Good ol' Smilin' Jack doesn't do much smiling in this grim episode, which confronts the heroic aviator with a mob of killers -- ready to strike. Mosley has a great deal in common with Dick Tracy's Chester Gould -- an exaggerated, Expressionistic style, an arsenal of grimaces and tense body-language, and a dizzying visual-narrative momentum. An interesting sidelight involves Mosley's marginal references to various flying events around the country, in solidarity with his real-world pilot friends. The large-scale piece is composed of separate panels glued to a backing-board. Image area, 25" x 17". Aside from some staining and paper-aging, the art is in Very Good condition.

V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 2 (NEA, Inc., 1970-71).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 2 (NEA, Inc., 1970-71). The 2018 cancellation of Alley Oop after an 85-year run makes the work of creator Hamlin all the more resonant. Hamlin was nearing retirement by the time of these gems, and his estrangement from assistant Graue made for an awkward situation -- but the artists remained an effective storytelling team. These close-in-time examples define the feature's main adventurous qualities: The 6-27-70 episode features caveman Alley Oop in his modern-day time-traveler state, and the 5-24-71 installment captures Oop in his natural prehistoric setting, complete with menacing dinosaurs. Ink over graphite on bright white Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6". Well-preserved and in Excellent condition.

Lank Leonard Mickey Finn Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 2 (McNaught Syndicate, 1937-'40s). The star piece of this selection is a suspenseful episode from 4-27-39, in which police rush to the rescue of a captive Mickey Finn. Leonard's crime-melodrama series often conveyed a lighter, more humorous tone, but this exception captures a grimmer side of law enforcement. The additional episode comes from a later run (dated only as 6-21), after Leonard had switched to a smaller format. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas range from 19.75" x 5.125" to 17" x 4.5". Very Good condition, with moderate age-toning.

The strip had started as Joe Quince -- re-titled Joe and Asbestos in 1924 -- and became notorious for publishing real-world gambling tips for its local marketplace, with remarkable accuracy. Gil Kane and Bernard Sachs Strange Adventures #55 Story Page 5 Original Art (DC Comics, 1955). One of the linchpin titles in the super-powers revival of the 1950s-60s, Strange Adventures helped to establish the tone and attitude for editor Julius Schwartz's SF-based costumed-hero titles to follow, including The Flash and Green Lantern. This page from "The Day the Sun Exploded!" catches Kane warming up for inevitable superhero duty, with two space-suited technos seeking a remedy for an ecological disaster. The concept is still relevant in the 21st century. This page features one of the earliest applications of the Comics Code stamp (lower margin), representing the rise of censorship in the wake of an anti-comics ruckus. Gold Key Artist Walter Lantz's Woody Woodpecker #170 Cover Original Art (Gold Key, 1978). Woody Woodpecker's comic-book incarnation stayed amazingly true to form over the long haul: A Woody cover in 1978 would appear entirely consistent with a Woody cover from the 1950s, in both style and attitude. The wacky character specialized in kid-stuff surrealism, and this one is a great example: Can the potted plant's roots be growing into the TV set? Sure does look that way. Skip Williamson Parody of "Corpses ... Coast to Coast" Partial Story Original Art Group of 2 (c. 1970s). One of the most notorious pre-Comics Code horror stories is Ruth Ann Roche and Robert Webb's "Corpses ... This two-page excerpt comes from Williamson's Underground Comix-style re-telling of that yarn, using much of Roche's authentic dialogue. The difference is Williamson's use of radical-left politics in lieu of walking-dead imagery. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 16.5". Jack Mendelsohn (attributed) Mighty Mouse Fun Club Magazine #4 Complete 6-Page Story, "Sick Sick Sidney in Booby Babysitter" Original Art (Pines Comics, 1958). Paul Terry's Terrytoons franchise had been acquired by CBS-TV, which turned new boss Gene Deitch loose on such radical new characters as Tom Terrific, Deputy Dawg -- and Sick Sick Sidney, a neurotic elephant. This story is consistent with the tone of Sidney's animated-cartoon debut, a pageant of hilarious and awkward absurdities. The style is unmistakably that of an unbilled Mendelsohn, who would become better known via the comic strip Jacky's Diary, and as a key writer-artist on the Beatles' Yellow Submarine feature-film. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Clare Victor Dwiggins (as Dwig) Oliver, the Wayward Owl Original Art (Stanton & Lee, Publ., 1945). Dwig, beloved for his School Days cartoons of rural Americana, was a natural choice to illustrate August Derleth's fanciful tale of a rebellious owl-child. Derleth was a comic-strip enthusiast, after all -- especially fond of Dwig's work. This fine illustration sports bold and spontaneous brushwork. (Derleth is remembered today as the publisher who bucked a snobbish literary establishment by championing H.P. Lovecraft as a major author. Oliver, the Wayward Owl appeared in print just six years after Derleth's first Lovecraft omnibus, The Outsider and Others.) Ink over graphite on off-white Bristol board, with white-paint retouching. Image area, 11" x 8". Barked corners. Moderate age-toning. The figure at right is a pasted-in image, a near-seamless art correction. Very Good condition.

Adventures of Mighty Mouse #12 Cover Original Art (St. John Publ., 1954). Before Mighty Mouse's makeover of 1956, the hero looked rougher, tougher, and more aggressive -- everything a Funny Animal-style parody of Superman should be. This fine composition is from that classic period, illustrating a space-opera epic called "The Freezing Terror." (A switch to Pines Comics in 1956 would see a cuter, more wide-eyed Mighty Mouse, in keeping with his new CBS-TV image. The present selection is more in keeping with creator Paul Terry's original concept.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19.25". Significant age-toning. Adhesive staining at upper quadrant. Logotype missing. Principal art in Very Good condition.

Kurt Schaffenberger and Bob Oskner Action Comics #573 Story Page 10 Original Art (DC Comics, 1985). As DC Comics approached its Crisis on Infinite Earths revolution, editor Julius Schwartz pulled out all the stops to make the Superman franchise almost as impossibly outrageous as it had been during the 1960s. Schaffenberger and DC's ace humorist, Oskner, are ideally suited. This slapstick-comedy page pits Superman against a ridiculous annoyance named J. Wilbur Wolfingham -- whom the original creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, had based upon the Hollywood comedian W.C. Fields. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-26 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1960s). Mopsy and her beau disagree -- whether to converse or watch TV? Her response is typically sarcastic, and all the funnier for that. Parker's imaginary autobiography in daily installments, Mopsy developed a loyal following over a stretch of three decades. Undated as to year, the cartoon dates stylistically to Parker's late-in-life period, when she retained a spirit of youth through her signature character. Beautifully drawn, with intense contrast between slender pen-line work and densely blackened areas. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 8.5" x 9.5". Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-24 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1960s). Mopsy is Parker's imaginary autobiography, dispensed in daily installments over a stretch of three decades. (Elder cartoonist Rube Goldberg had said that Parker's hair "Looked like a mop.") She often devoted her feature to "Say what?" one-liners, calculated to inspire befuddlement as well as humor. This piece is a prime example. Undated as to year, the cartoon dates stylistically to Parker's late-in-life period, when she stayed youthful through her signature character. Beautifully drawn, with intense contrast between slender pen-line work and densely blackened areas. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 8.5" x 9.5". Paul Lundy Fantastic Adventures Magazine Vol. 14, #3, and One Other Artist Original Art Group of 2 (Ziff-Davis Publ., 1952). Disembodied brain-waves were a chronic interest of the pulp science-fictioneers. One of the better such tales is William P. McGivern's novella The Travelling Brain, as strikingly illustrated by Lundy. A load of delicate detail in this small-scale gem (actual publication size), with a painstaking scratchboard technique reminiscent of Weird Tales' Virgil Finlay. The story-title logo, too, is hand-lettered, with the unusual tactic of painted white lettering over dot-screen Zipatone. Brilliant. The accompanying piece, James "Nybor" Odbert's 1977 illustration for a story called "Seeker," is a similarly high-contrast job, reminiscent of the style of Jim Steranko. Ink over graphite on varied page-stock. Image areas, 11" x 8" and 8" x 13". Moderate toning; handling wear on the Lundy piece. Very Good to Excellent condition.

Better known for his neo-Impressionist studies of everyday people in their home or working environments, Baumgartner excels here at capturing a New Mexico roadway landscape in bold, semi-Expressionist strokes. The title of the painting is recorded just above the signature (lower right). Baumgartner's use of an extremely wet brush remains evident in the figurative fluidity of the contours, a sign that the paints mingled with each other even while drying. The presence of a firmly ruled margin (slightly within the image area itself) suggests that the painting was prepared for magazine publication. Traces of a basic pencil-sketch remain visible. Warren Kremer Richie Rich #80 Cover Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1969). Each of Harvey Comics' kid-comedy stars was defined by obsessive-compulsive behavior -- Little Dot's polka-dot patterns, Little Lotta's appetite, Casper the Ghost's need for human company, and of course Richie Rich's fixation with wealth. The logotype and boilerplate are missing (a common trait in Harvey art), and age-toning, scuffing, and marginal staining are prevalent. Image area, 8" x 9". Good condition.

The Interrupted Sitting Sequential Comic Strip Original Art (c. 1890s). "Bilkins decides to have his dog's picture painted," begins the narrative caption that courses through this fine suite of proto-comics. The portrait-sitting, of course, turns out to be a comical disaster. The unbilled artist exerts a style reminiscent of Frederick Burr Opper or A.S. Daggy, turn-of-the-century contemporaries who became associated with such early-day humor magazines as Puck and Life. The character of Bilkins is a recurring type in early-day comics art, also associated with such artists as Edward Windsor Kemble and Clarence Rigby. These close-in-time examples feature some prime slapstick, loads of wordplay and embarrassments galore. Moon Mullins was so popular in its day that a famous boogie-woogie pianist, Aubrey W. Mullican, renamed himself as Moon Mullican in the strip's honor. The dates represented, all from 1947, are 2-15, 2-22, 2-26, 2-28, 3-14, and 3-15. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Overall age-toning and handling wear. Very Good condition.

Fred Harman Red Ryder Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-8-59 (McNaught Syndicate, 1959). Remembered primarily today for the licensed Daisy-brand Red Ryder B-B Gun, Red Ryder held forth from 1938 through 1965 as a mainstay of the newspapers' comics pages -- and a stellar example of the funnypapers' Western genre. This brilliant example finds Red Ryder in a showdown with a fugitive criminal, then cuts to a desperate patch for Red's sidekick, Little Beaver. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Frank Willard Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1946-47). A concentration of slapstick and sarcasm -- the essence of Willard's classic of lowbrow comedy. The late-1946 entries include Christmas-season references, including a full-frame festive panel. Willard also throws in a reference to the postwar boom in crime-and-horror comic books, depicting recurring character Lord Plushbottom relaxing with an issue of the (fictional) Super Murder Comics. This generous array includes 12-18-46, 12-24-46, 12-25-46, 2-3-47, and 2-13-47. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.75" x 6". Varied toning and handling wear. Very Good condition.

Harold Gray Little Orphan Annie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-16-68 (News Syndicate Co. Inc., 1968). This late-in-life episode of the classic feature finds creator Gray still writing and drawing -- just as he had since the 1920s, with only token assistance on the lettering and window-dressing. (For example, the extra brushwork in the foliage, panels 2-3, is patently the work of Gray's cousin and helper, Ed Leffingwell -- a stark contrast with Gray's delicate pen-line.) Annie and Sandy, having stowed away in a semitrailer rig, cringe from an impending traffic accident. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 20" x 6". George Wunder Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-5-71 (New York News Syndicate, Inc., 1971). Wunder had some mighty big shoes to fill when he inherited Terry and the Pirates from originator Milton Caniff. (Not to suggest that Caniff had big feet, of course.) Wunder hit the ground running, and he spent decades making Terry distinctively his own. This episode, from a peak period of innovation and artistry, finds Wunder playing with the daily feature's horizontal layout -- blurring the traditional panel borders or removing them entirely, and creating almost a 3-D effect in the process. Brett Breeding - Metamorpho/Shift DC Licensing Style Guide Illustration Original Art Group of 2 (DC, 2007).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
Brett Breeding - Metamorpho/Shift DC Licensing Style Guide Illustration Original Art Group of 2 (DC, 2007). Created as reference for a Mattel Inc. project for packaging art. With his appearance in Outsiders Volume 3, Metamorpho was sporting a new look (essentially tattooed, with a bit of trouble keeping his shape). It turned out this was not the Metamorpho, but a regrown part of Metamorpho. This new entity started going by the name "Shift" when the real Metamorpho returned. In this group, we have the original pencils (over printed blue line roughs) on 17" x 11" paper, and the original inks (over printed blue lines of the pencils) on 17" x 11.5" bright white Bristol board. Both are signed and in Excellent condition.

Lin Streeter Classics Illustrated Junior #539 "The Enchanted Fish" Cover Painting Original Art (Gilberton, 1957). Aimed at younger readers, CI Jr adapted fairy tales, and exposed many children to more obscure stories than your run-of-the-mill Mother Goose tales. Sal Trapani and Chic Stone The Monster Trilogy Part 2:The Winged Terror Complete 8-Page Story Original Art (c. 1970s). An ambitious story -- resurrected flying dinosaur rampages along the West Coast, leaving a trail of death and destruction en route to an ironic finale. All evidence points to an unpublished, or orphaned, story that appears to have originated as part of a larger series. There are strong echoes of 19th-century legends from France and Arizona, and of Peter B. Kyne's famous monster-at-large story of 1916, "The Last Survivor." Stone's painted embellishments lend a sense of photorealism, and the scenes of devastation are of an epic calibre. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Dale Messick Brenda Starr Hand-Colored Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-17-55 (Chicago Tribune, 1955). Brenda Starr was the funnypapers' answer to the movies' Torchy Blane -- an aggressive journalist, beating the dominant ranks of menfolk-reporters at their own game. Her creator was a woman, as well -- Dalia "Dale" Messick -- and one heck of a fine storyteller/artist. This prime-period episode catches Brenda in a compromising situation, at the mercy of a malicious editor. The hand-coloring (post-publication) is the work of Messick herself. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with added watercolor. Image area of 29" x 13". Moderate toning. Very Good condition.

Bob Peak - Orlon Suede Doubleskins Catalog Illustration Painting Original Art (Puritan Clothing, c. 1960s). Bob Peak is well-remembered for his many innovative movie posters. Magazine Artist Red Let Go of His Hoss.. Original Art (c. 1950s)....
Magazine Artist Red Let Go of His Hoss.. Original Art (c. 1950s). This cryptic dandy arrives without accompanying documentation of any publishing pedigree, artist, or even a title. A classic Wild West storybook quality characterizes the art, and so does the hand-lettering, which appears on a vellum overlay: "Red let go of his hoss -- But he never..." (And that's where the caption ends.) The bucking-horse scenario is vividly depicted, complete with an amused bystander. Graphite, watercolors, and wax-pencil shading on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 11". Rust stains (upper margin) and one torn area in vellum page. Very Good condition.

William Overgard Rudy in Hollywood and Other Artists including Virgil Partch and Mell Lazarus Daily and Sunday Comic Strips Original Art Group of 7 (1980s-90s). Overgard's neglected masterpiece, Rudy, tells of an intelligent ape at large in a society of mostly unintelligent humans. A brilliant example (7-29-83) toplines this generous selection. Then, there are (1) a similarly fine full-width composition from Lazarus' Miss Peach (6-17-80); (2) a Farley strip by Phil Frank (11-22-75), parodying the Jaws movie-craze; (3) a beautifully illustrated Carol Day (2-15-63), from David Wright's British crime-melodrama series; (4) an un-pedigreed gladiator strip, date-stamped 1981 but signed only as "Martin"; (5) a Mr. Boffo panel (12-17-97) by Joe Martin; (6) and a Partch Sunday, Big George!, from 8-23-81. Ink over graphite and varied additional media on a variety of page-stocks. Image areas, 17.5" x 8" to 14" x. 4.5. Conditions vary from Very Good to Excellent.
