Stan Goldberg and John Tartaglione Modeling with Millie #47 Story Page 8 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1966). As Stan Lee's self-proclaimed "Marvel Age of Comics" grew to dominate the superhero scene, the company persisted with its old-school romance-and-humor line, just like in the late 1950s and earlier 1960s. This classic Goldberg page (a marginal note suggests the unusually emphatic inking is by Tartaglione) finds Millie the Model all at sea with a boat-racing champion. A tiny detail finds one yacht bearing the name of "Lady Marie" -- an inside-joke nod from writer Denny O'Neil to Marvel's production expert and all-around artist, Marie Severin. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.75" x 18.5". Excellent condition.

Warren Tufts Casey Ruggles Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-21-51 (United Feature Syndicate, 1951)....
Warren Tufts Casey Ruggles Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-21-51 (United Feature Syndicate, 1951). A spectacular snowstorm sequence, with a phantom hunter at large, dominates this large-scale installment from one of the best Western-adventure features ever produced. Tufts was on a roll, here -- but only a few years away from abandoning his creation as the result of a disagreement with the syndicate. The strip retained a vibrancy throughout, thanks to the artist's attitude of "Do it right, or don't do it." (By 1954, without Tufts in charge, the popular appeal faded, and Casey Ruggles ended shortly thereafter.) Fine brush-and-pen work; the red-inked areas represent guidelines for the engraving department to add special visual effects. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 23" x 15". Three tiers are joined on reverse by production tape, which has become brittle with age. Slight to moderate toning and adhesive staining. Very Good condition.

Terrytoons Artist Heckle and Jeckle #19 Cover Original Art (St. John Publ., 1954). A weird composite, here -- the upper-middle portion of the art is consistent with the published magazine. Modifications have been made, however, to the logotype, which has been replaced with a faded photocopy, pasted out-of-plumb. The lower portion (also pasted in) replaces the authentic drawing of title characters Heckle and Jeckle with a re-drawn replica in a different grade of India ink and a less polished style of pen-strokes. Somehow, it works. A copy of the funnybook is included. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13.25" x 16". Pronounced toning, paste-up stains and seams, and marginal moisture-staining. A prolific gallery painter in the Philippines, Magpayo also has worked occasionally as a standout comics artist, specializing in brushwork that resembles woodcut technique. His assignments at DC Comics date from 1979 -- including this horrific gem called "A Touch of Silver," in which a menacing artist creates sculptures by coating living creatures in the gleaming metal. The tale had languished in inventory until it was deployed in 1981 for Secrets of Haunted House. Writer Arnold Drake (of Doom Patrol) has cited an inspiration in Roger Corman's 1960 movie, A Bucket of Blood, which features a similarly grisly style of sculpture. Ink over graphite on a thinner grade of Bristol board -- a variety of page-stock commonly used by publishers in the Philippines. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Joe Staton and Bob Smith The Huntress #12 Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1990)....
Joe Staton and Bob Smith The Huntress #12 Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1990). Staton's bold architectural design establishes the claustrophobia-inducing tone of Joey Cavalieri's script for "Party at Ground Zero." Human characters (yes, even the Huntress) seem secondary to the stifling character of a tenement neighborhood. Smith's inks and shading textures complement the scene ideally, and so does Bob Lappan's unique style of lettering. A fine example of one of the better Batman-spinoff titles. Rendered in ink and chemical shading on Craftint board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Rick Yager Death Ray lllustration Original Art (c. 1950s). ...
Rick Yager Death Ray lllustration Original Art (c. 1950s). The Depression-era comic strip Buck Rogers had brought science fiction to the comics, and Yager's post-World War II version of Buck Rogers brought comic-strip SF into the Atomic Age. This stand-alone watercolor is not formally a Buck Rogers piece, but Yager's masterful touch invokes that classic feature, in any case. The contours, the dynamic composition, the bursts of flaming color -- all work together to create a bracing space-battle scene. Inscribed at lower right. Ink, graphite, and watercolors on layout paper. Image area, 13" x 7". Wrinkling is intrinsic to the art, caused originally by Yager's use of a very wet brush on lightweight page-stock. Excellent condition.

Gus Arriola Gordo Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-13-79 (United Feature Syndicate, 1979)....
Gus Arriola Gordo Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-13-79 (United Feature Syndicate, 1979). Even within the 1970s' shrinking display space of the dailies, Arriola still brought a brilliant sense of design and gag-timing to Gordo -- a strip that practically leaps at the reader, with its bold patches of black-ink definition and artistic crosshatching. This fine example also features one of the best knock-knock jokes ever composed. Its Republican political reference is more timely than ever, nowadays. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 5.5". Excellent condition.

Edwin Eberman Famous Artists Course Original Art in Ring Binder (Famous Artists Schools, c. 1960s)....
Edwin Eberman Famous Artists Course Original Art in Ring Binder (Famous Artists Schools, c. 1960s). Eberman (1905-88) remains better known as a gallery painter and art director for such high-end magazines as McCall's and Look. This 30-page array of sculptural collages and original cartoon drawings comes as rather a surprise: It is Eberman's parody of a training manual for Famous Artists Schools, which he had co-founded in 1948 at Wilton, CT. (Instead of such real-life Famous Artists teachers as Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne, Eberman's unique book lists such imaginary faculty members as "Hardly Magoo," "Vic Loafing," and "Joe Stogie.") Ink, watercolors, shading film, and collage effects on coated page-stock, with printed text pages. Dimensions, 12" x 14.5". Barked corners on binder. Some smaller pasted-in elements have fallen away, leaving adhesive residue. Very Good condition.

Don Lomax American Towman Magazine "Boomer Hayes" Comics Feature Original Art Group of 6 plus Color Prints (c. 2000s). Some of the best comics never get seen by a massed audience -- what with their being trade-journal features, known primarily to a specialized readership. Lomax's Boomer Hayes is such a feature, geared specifically to tow-truck operators. Like Lomax's other industrial cartoons (on construction-site safety and the shipping-and-hauling profession), Boomer Hayes packs a potential for general appeal in its first-rate artistry and ironic wit. (Lomax is more widely recognized for his grimmer, more naturalistic epic, Vietnam Journal.) These Boomers are accompanied by color-print versions. Ink over graphite on bright white Bristol board. Image areas, 7.5" x 10.5" to 12" 9". Excellent condition.

Marc Sasso Fleer Ultra Spider-Man Trading Card #89 Original Art (Marvel/Fleer, 1995)....
Marc Sasso Fleer Ultra Spider-Man Trading Card #89 Original Art (Marvel/Fleer, 1995). Short of the Marvel Zombies books, the most horrific treatment of the Marvel superheroes lies in Sasso's wild fantasias on Spider-Man and Venom for Fleer's trading-card spinoffs. (Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum was never like this.) This enigmatic painting catches an ominous Spider-Man rising from the grave. A foreground figure, partially seen, suggests the presence of the Marvel version of Conan the Barbarian. Creepy business, excellently well-rendered. Opaque watercolors on illustration board. Image area, 6.5" x 9". Marginal adhesive residue. Excellent condition.

Robert Crumb Monster Greeting Cards #38 Card Front Original Art (Topps Co., Inc, 1965)....
Robert Crumb Monster Greeting Cards #38 Original Art (Topps Co., Inc, 1965). Before he found his truer voice in the Underground Comix movement, R. Crumb toiled as a greeting-card artist and production technician. From the mildly sarcastic Hi-Brows line at American Greetings, Crumb tore into the downright insulting Monster Greeting Cards line at Topps. This example is the fully painted miniature front of a two-sided gag. The lovely young innocent says, "There's only one thing I'd rather do than go out with you." (Flip the card over, and she says, "Kill Myself!" while demonstrating the point with a knife.) Ink and opaque watercolors on tinted cardstock. Image area, 3.5" x 4.75". Light wrinkling from its having been pasted into a scrapbook. Adhesive residue and black-paper fibers on reverse. Very Good condition.

Worth Brehm Cosmopolitan Magazine Vol. LXIV "Penrod Jashber: His Career as a Detective" Original Art (International Magazine Co., 1918). Brehm's large-scale ensemble composition study depicts rambunctious Penrod Schofield (signature character of novelist Booth Tarkington) in a confrontation with four grouchy adult authority figures. Jashber is Penrod's imaginary detective-self. The third of the Penrod yarns, the tale reappeared in 1929 as a self-contained novel. The pedigree is affirmed in a Cosmopolitan stamp on reverse. Brehm's signature is almost hidden, at upper right. This illustration is representative of Brehm's mastery of photorealism -- rendered in pure graphite on 27.5" x 17.25" Winsor Newton illustration board. (Brehm often used a broad-point carpenter's pencil to achieve a silvery tonal delicacy in wide strokes.) The board is toned, with brittle and partially eroded edges, a 1.5" tear on the right that's about to disconnect, and foxing. The image area, however, displays most vividly. Very Good condition.
