Gene Ahern, James Swinnerton, and Others Our Boarding House and Additional Gag-Panel Features Original Art (1934-39). Major Amos Hoople, the star blowhard of Our Boarding House, once was so popular that he inspired two very similar features -- and even a network-radio show. Hoople is at his boastful best in the centerpiece (3-9-34) of this fine array. Comics pioneer Swinnerton weighs in with a Canyon Kiddies episode (10-14-36), continuing a feature he had originated in 1922 at Good Housekeeping magazine. A very funny play-on-words gag by Ralph Fuller comes from Liberty magazine, vintage 1934. And an installment of Back Home Again (7-22-39) finds Ed Dodd channeling the influence of J.R. Williams' Out Our Way -- long before Dodd would find his truer style with Mark Trail. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 9" x 8" to 12" x 11". Very Good to Excellent condition.

Everything but the cover, and you almost get that too as Page 1 is an almost exact match to the cover image! This group contains 23 pages of two complete Captain Hero stories ("Multiple Madness" and "The Attack of the Monster Machines"), and the one-page Li'l Jinx story by Joe Edwards. Also included in a single sheet of Bristol board with the production paste-up for the two-page letters page from the issue. The original art pages were created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15" each. Page 1 of the first story has a handwritten note stapled to it from the production department (Flipped up in the image). That page is missing the stat logo paste-up. Page 7 of that story has a stripped-in art correction in two panels. The first pages of the rest of the various chapters have their stat logo paste-up in place. The reverse side of Page 9 of the first story has a graphite drawing of a German World War II soldier and a Napoleon era soldier. The reverse of Page 8 from the second story has an inked image of a pigeon. A very few pages are in Very Good condition from glue residue; however, the majority are in Excellent condition.

Don Lomax Highway Justice Complete 18-Page Story Original Art Group of 18 (Overdrive Magazine, 2018).... (Total: 18 Original Art)
Don Lomax Highway Justice Complete 18-Page Story Original Art Group of 18 (Overdrive Magazine, 2018). Lomax's hard-edged realism lends impact to this tale of a semi-crooked truck driver and his enlistment by the FBI to break a human-trafficking racket. Here is an innovative use of comics narrative to enliven the on-line trade journal of Overdrive, published for the owner-operator truckers' industry. The art bears favorable comparison with Lomax's better-known Vietnam Journal chronicles. The Highway Justice panels are entirely wordless -- blank caption-boxes and balloons, reserved for the addition of digital lettering. The finished pages can be seen for comparison on the Web at overdriveonline-dot-com. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 7" x 13". Excellent condition, with occasional scuffing.

Bob Fujitani All-New Comics/Boy Heroes Unpublished Story Page 1 Original Art (Harvey, c. 1946). This seems to be an unpublished page original created most likely for All-New Comics #13, but then re-purposed for an unreleased Issue #1 for a new Boy Heroes spin-off book. The story was titled "Trap for Tyrants", but it isn't clear who the featured character(s) would be. Wonderfully crafted twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18". The lightly toned page has some pinholes in the margins, with minor stains and handling wear around the edges. The story title in the caption box is a paste-up. The check-off box in the lower margin has whiteout covering the original "July All-New" designation, and has been reassigned to Boy Heroes #1. The page is in Very Good condition.

Dan Adkins Man and Alien Original Art (c. 1960s)....
Dan Adkins Man and Alien Original Art (c. 1960s). A tantalizing and haunting character study, from a key protègé of the great Wally Wood. Adkins' signature and a bold application of crosshatching suggest a finished product, and yet the use of conventional bond paper and a sketchier aspect (in the lightning-bolts) hint at a preliminary composition. To compound the mystery, a pencilled notation (lower left) reads: "Used in Jan." Enigmatic pedigree aside, this is one formidable drawing -- solidly in the classic pulp science-fiction tradition. Ink on bond. Image area, 8.5" x 11". Marginal toning and handling. Two fold-creases. Very Good condition.

One depicts waterfowl hunters lurking in wait for their quarry. The other shows a rifle-bearing figure in pursuit of a black bear. Tex Blaisdell, Harry O'Neill, and Fran Matera Little Orphan Annie and Additional Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 3 (1940s-70s). Blaisdell subdued his natural style in order to emulate Harold Gray as Little Orphan Annie continued beyond its creator's death. This episode (4-11-70) features leading characters Annie, Oliver Warbucks, and the Asp, along with a villain called Slumlard. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. A brilliant selection, drawn from a novelistic sequence involving boisterous Mamie Mullins' career as a wrestler, along with an inheritance for her bum of a husband, Uncle Willie. Willard's masterstroke was to populate Moon Mullins with disreputable, ridiculous characters -- and then to make them all sympathetic and sometimes even admirable. Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney Sub-Mariner #34 Story Pages 12-13 Group of 2 (Marvel Comics, 1971). One page, or two? These stirring war-zone sequences were composed as separate half-pagers (likely meant to accommodate advertising at the lower tiers) -- but wound up printed together, as a full page. The published issue shows the upper tier numbered as 12 and the lower as 13 -- a production gaffe that might have won one of editor Stan Lee's notorious No-Prize awards for some attentive reader. Buscema's use of cinematic angles and intense expressions recalls the virile work of his brother, John Buscema. Mooney's emphatic inking lends depth and character. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The astonishing detail achieved with graphite and charcoal is consistent with Hill's better-known Sunday-comics strip, Among Us Mortals. Elsewhere, master portraitist Godwin offers a fine profile on the unusual medium of a menu-card from the National Press Club of Washington. And speaking of journalism, there is a fine unsigned charcoal study of a 1920s newspaper office -- accurate to the finer detail of a persistent tobacco haze. Rounding out the package are a street/canal scene by Carl Stephen Junge (1896), in homage to fellow artist Joseph Pennell; and an unsigned fine-grain etching, depicting mythological beats in carven symmetry. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, among other media. Image areas, 6" x 11" to 19" x 14". Age-toning of varied degrees and scattered staining/edge damage. Conditions vary from Good to Excellent condition.

Wallace Carlson and Additional Artists The Nebbs and Other Daily-Sunday Comic Strips Original Art Group of 5 (1940s). The Nebbs is an important strip in the family-style tradition of The Gumps and Gasoline Alley. These choice examples (without formal day-and-month numbering) cover such bases as class discrimination, gossip, and shirking duty -- all with eloquent body-language and precisely the right words. Art Huhta Dinky Dinkerton, Secret Agent 6 & 7/8 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Jones Syndicate, c. 1940s). A rare gem of screwball cartooning: Huhta's wacky detective lampoon ran from 1939 into the 1940s, anticipating not only Bill Holman's Smokey Stover but also the Sherlock Holmes parodies of Harvey Kurtzman and Bill Elder in MAD. This fine example radiates mystery and humor in equal measure -- and includes a fine depiction of the starring characters, Dinky Dinkerton and his assistant, Sniffy, in the closing panel. And yes, the name is a pun on the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency. The date is given as 11-15, without a documented year. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21.5" x 5,75". Louis Glackens, Charles "Chic" Jackson, and Frank A. Nankwell Puck Cartoon and Other Original Art Group of 3 (1897-1928). A splendid lot of 19th-into-20th Century cartoons, ranging from Glackens' Christmas-season elf (the humor magazine Puck) -- to Nankwell's poignant street-vendor scene -- to Jackson's special-purpose cartoon/collage, evidently designed to mark the occasion of a wedding. The Glackens art, though intact, shows extensive age-toning. The Nankwell is impeccably well preserved. The Jackson is conspicuously spot-stained and bears a full-width crack in the upper section. William Donahey The Teenie Weenies Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-21-60 (News Syndicate Co., 1960). The Teenie Weenies dates from 1912, originally inspired by Palmer Cox's The Brownies. Donahey would continue the strip for nearly 60 years -- combining a talent for nature drawing with an affinity for cartooning. Each installment is distinguished by one large illustration (part-realistic, part-cartoon), to be accompanied by a storybook-style narrative text. A recurring feature is an inset of a featured character, designed like a paper doll. This gem is fashioned from ink over graphite on medium-weight illustration board. Image area, 13.25" x 8.35". Frank Willard Moon Mullins Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-14-31 (Chicago Tribune, 1931). Moon Mullins, the trials and tribulations of an amateur pugilist, made its debut on June 19, 1923. The strip eventually evolved into a domestic comedy, focusing on Moon's life in Mrs. Schmaltz's Boarding House, a format that saw the strip through nearly seven decades of syndication. The piece offered here, measuring approximately 16.75" x 22.25" overall, features Moon and many members of his supporting cast. A delightful Sunday page, this piece also includes the Kitty Higgins filler feature at the bottom. In very good condition, there is some evidence of light soiling in several spots, pinholes in the margins, and a few notes, but this does little to detract from the overall eye-appeal of this early 1930s classic.
