Al Kilgore Charles Chaplin Portraiture and Caricature Original Art Group of 6 (New York American Publ., 1971).... (Total: 6 Items)
Al Kilgore Charles Chaplin Portraiture and Caricature Original Art Group of 6 (New York American Publ., 1971). The centerpiece of this lovely selection is a large-scale cartoon-portrait in chalk-surface watercolors of the great Hollywood comedian Charlie Chaplin -- modeled after the famous shoe-eating scene in The Gold Rush (1925). Kilgore, a voracious scholar of film as well as a master caricaturist, does much the same here that he had done for Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in a suite of paintings and drawings of the 1960s. Another, smaller painting in opaque watercolors is a more realistic study (accompanied by a very similar pencil study), and two yet-smaller drawings are lively cartoon renditions. An accompanying copy of Applause magazine features a reproduction of the large painting. Chaplin seldom looked so good as when drawn by Al Kilgore. Tempera on Bristol board, and varied other media. Image areas range from 5" x 8.5" to 15" x 20". Age-toning, occasional staining and scuffing. Very Good condition.

Mel Brooks calls this page "one of the funniest things I've ever read." Price's signature character, the big-nosed Konstable Moe Lester, delivers one of the most dreadful puns in the history of dreadful punning. The page has an interesting dual pedigree, having originated as an installment of Price & Camp's newspaper comic strip, What Next?! and then getting a makeover as a page for the Underground Comics title Krime Duzzin't Pay! Don Heck The Flash #282 Unpublished Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1980)....
Don Heck The Flash #282 Unpublished Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1980). Always a thrill to see Heck's raw artwork. This pencils-only gem differs significantly from his published version (as inked by Frank Chiaramonte), which alters the angle slightly and eliminates the evil-looking inset-cameo of Professor Zoom, the Reverse-Flash. From the celebrated story-cycle involving the murder of the Flash's wife, Iris. Heck's background in pre-Comics Code horror reasserts itself in the feverish desperation of this fine page. (And speaking of the Comics Code, the lettering contains a censor-baiting use of the word damn.) Graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 13". Excellent condition.

The cover and interiors that had been prepared for #192 finally saw print in Woody Woodpecker #195 (1981). Gabrielle Bell July Diary Original Art dated 7-3-14 (2014). In 2012, Gabrielle Bell began her "slice-of-life" style single page comic strip that was essentially a day-by-day illustrated diary for the month of July. She was already a prolific artist at that time, and this really caught on, so it was collected into a book titled July Diary and published in 2012. Since then, she has continued the exercise every year and published them on the web. Here is her original art page for "July Third", signed and dated 2014 on the bottom right. Ed Sullivan Out Our Way Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-11-74 (NEA, Inc., 1974). Rare that a fan gets to inherit the responsibility for a classic comic strip. Sullivan cherished J.R. Williams' Out Our Way so thoroughly that he created a look-alike feature called The Googans while a youngster. Sullivan landed the authentic Out Our Way assignment in 1971 (long after Williams' death) and persisted until its cancellation in 1974. This bright example captures the spirit of Williams while adding fresh stylistic touches. (This Ed Sullivan is not to be confused with the TV personality.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. This piece was created specifically for a publication celebrating the 200th anniversary of Washington and Lee University in Virginia. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 9" x 9.5", with a personal note from "Pagan Lee" addressed "...from one Lee to another". A notation on the back of the board indicates it was likely for Page 32 of the publication. Signed in the image area. In Excellent condition.

Packingham accounts for nine of these selections, with an additional two representing (1) New York cartoonist Bill Bramhall and (2) an unsigned cartoon, reproduced as an engraver's negative -- the only non-original piece in this selection. Sydney B. Griffin and Alfred Zantziger Baker Puck Magazine Original Art Group of 2 (Puck Publ., 1890-1912). Each picture tells a story in this choice set of historic humor cartoons. Puck was an ancestor of MAD Magazine, and the influence has remained strong. Griffin's depiction of a tense courtroom scene is rich with caricature -- a rare depiction of an integrated jury, given the 19th-century setting. Baker's contribution involves a woman's hat and a goat's imitation of that very hat. Varied media on varied page-stock. Image areas, 10" x 10" and 9.75" x 6.25". Moderate age-toning. Anderson's small-scale conceptual drawing, here, envisions life itself as a classroom, populated with a handful of aged people. The artist called this study "The School of Life -- Kept In," but the publisher retitled it as "The Graduating Class." Accompanied by a tearsheet from the magazine. Robert Webb and Iger Studio Secret Romances #13 Story Page 7 Original Art (Superior Comics, 1953). The dominant style of Robert Hayward Webb, art director of the Jerry Iger comics studio, renders this assembly-line page soulful and compelling. (Webb had been a mentor to EC Comics' Al Feldstein, and the influence is patent here.) The pre-Comics Code scene finds a callous, manipulative author pondering her romantic prospects after her husband has staged an ambush-divorce. A social-climbing wife struggles to impress the rest of the world while subduing her husband's plain-folks nature. Fans of Cliff Sterrett's Polly and Her Pals (from the same period) will appreciate Momand's similar attitude and drawing style. These pieces date from 9-20-30, 11-27-31, and 12-10-31. Gene Byrnes, Charles D. Small, and Others Reg'lar Fellers and Additional Daily Comic Strips Original Art Group of 4 (Various Syndicates, 1923-1929). Byrnes wrote the book on cartooning -- literally. His Complete Guide to Cartooning (1947), featuring many famous guest-artists, remains a standard reference in the development of comic strips and related art. He practiced what he taught, too: His Reg'lar Fellers (seen here in its 11-27-26 episode) is a classic of kid-stuff comedy. This example also contains a reference to Olympian swimmer and future Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller. Here, too, is the Christmas Day (1925) episode of Doc Winner's similarly conceived Tubby. Also represented is Ad Carter's near-simultaneous Just Kids (9-3-23). Largest of the lot is a two-foot-wide Salesman Sam (12-26-29) by Small, a heavy concentration of rambunctious silliness. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 19" x 6" to 25" x 6.5". All but Salesman Sam show moderate toning, in Very Good condition. The Sam shows heavy age-toning and brittleness, in Fair Condition.

Phil Davis Mandrake the Magician Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-4-60 (King Features Syndicate, 1960). Considered by some historians to be the comics' first superhero, Mandrake has a fine showcase appearance in this well-drawn installment -- two framing panels (first and fourth), flanking two flashback panels about a science-fictional police officer. The sophisticated presentation stretches the possibilities of the traditional horizontal comic strip formula. Drake had succeeded creator/writer Lee Falk as lead artist during the middle 1930s, and would continue until 1964. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17" x 5". Faint toning. Comics master Powell was just developing his distinctive style when he tackled this late installment in the Blonde Bomber backup series. The urgency of a desperate situation comes across in a bold radial composition, built around deep areas of black-ink gravity and varying camera angles. Powell's grasp of facial anatomy would grow ever stronger as the 1940s morphed into the '50s, but here his figures are already powerfully built and posed, and his narrative momentum is just right. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.75" x 6". Varied toning and marginal scuffing/scribbling. Very Good to Excellent condition.

Raeburn Van Buren Abbie an' Slats Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-6-65 (United Feature Syndicate, 1965)....
Raeburn Van Buren Abbie an' Slats Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-6-65 (United Feature Syndicate, 1965). The longer Abbie an' Slats ran -- a long time -- the weirder the strip became. Founding artist Van Buren remained in charge well into the 1970s, indulging his varied appetites for suspense, romance, corny humor, and even terror. This fine example of weirdness involves a miniature woman, traveling in a shipping crate, who turns out to be "not just an ordinary human being, but the world's greatest soprano!!" Splendidly drawn (as usual). The dialogue includes an in-joke reference to the cartoon character Boris Badenov, from Rocky & His Friends -- this guy is called Boris Goodenough. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Fred Neher Life's like That Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Consolidated News Features, c. 1940s). Neher's gag-panel feature ran well into the 1970s -- a consistently humorous look at human nature. Hal Forrest Artie the Ace Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 Consecutive (Paramount Newspaper Syndicate, 1927). Only the second time we have seen this series, it is a hidden nugget of comic strip history! Artie the Ace, was one of the first aviation-themed comic strips. Not a surprise it was created by Hal Forrest, better-known for his later creations Tailspin Tommy, and Four Aces (both aviation-themed as well), and it also pre-dated Smilin' Jack (by Zack Mosley, one of the most well-known aviation-themed strips). This strip was a very fast-paced series of cliffhanger endings. Dated only as 1927 and possibly unpublished, this set of five consecutive dailies chronicle Artie's pitstop in Calcutta. Created in ink with blue pencil shading over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 22" x 5.25". They are toned, and joined on the reverse side with tape. In Very Good condition.

Dick Briefer Rex Dexter of Mars #1 Cover Re-Creation Original Art (1980)....
Dick Briefer Rex Dexter of Mars #1 Cover Re-Creation Original Art (1980). Briefer, one of the primary architects of the comic-book industry, envisioned Rex Dexter in 1940 as a science-fictional superhero -- very early in the superhero boom. The feature lasted only one issue, but Briefer had bigger projects in store -- including a long-running takeoff on Frankenstein that has largely defined the artist's greater legacy. This large-scale reconstruction, from the last year of Briefer's life, finds him in fine artistic form, taking more realistic liberties with the original version and adding subtle shadings of color that are absent from the original publication. On reverse: A signed B&W photocopy of the 1940 cover. Acrylics over graphite on textured fiberboard. Image area, 22" x 27.5". One small smudge at upper right, beneath logotype. Excellent condition.

Traylor Roy Rogers Comics Unused Cover Original Art and Roy Rogers Signed Photo (Dell, c. 1944)....
Traylor Roy Rogers Comics Unused Cover Original Art and Roy Rogers Signed Photo (Dell, c. 1944). An iconic and easily recognizable pose of Roy Rogers and Trigger! This prototype cover features the same logo used from 1945 (Four Color Comics #86) through 1950 (Roy Rogers Comics #33). The familiar image was a common pose used on many Roy Rogers promotional piece photographs. In fact, a photo of Trigger rearing up like that was used on the cover of Roy Rogers Comics #21. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board, it is signed "Traylor" in the lower part of the 11.75" x 15.5" image area. It is handsomely matted and framed with a black and white 5" x 7" photo personalized and signed by Roy Rogers. But lets back up a minute and talk about that ornate Dan MaKara frame! the matt is covered with Roy Rogers comic and photo images and set at a jaunty angle to spectacular effect. Set behind Plexiglas in the 20.25" x 27.5" wooden frame, the bottom of which has a small silver bar with part of a Roy Rogers and Trigger tin toy attached to it for a wonderful 3-D flourish! The art and photo are in Excellent condition. This piece is a true treat for the eye!

Alfredo Alcala The Savage Sword of Conan #80 Story Page 32 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1982). Alcala usually would interpret his many Conan assignments in a woodcut-like style. Here, he takes an unusual tack -- finishing out the page with crayon-shading on a surface of pebble-trained stock. A real treat to the eye, with a really scary-looking fish-frog-crab monster for good measure. Ink and crayon over graphite on Coquille board. Image area, 10.5" x 15". Moderate toning. V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-25-72 (NEA, Inc., 1972). One of the great collaborations in comic-strip history is the teaming on Alley Oop of creator Hamlin and assistant-turned-partner Graue. Though estranged from one another by the 1970s over Graue's demands for more money, the artists continued to work together by mail -- even though they resided in the same town. No such tensions are evident in this fine, understated episode, featuring heroic cavewoman Ooola and prehistoric King Guzzle. Professionalism and generous humor prevail. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6". Excellent condition.

In place of his usual woodcut-like inking, the artist finishes out the page with crayon-shading on a surface of pebble-trained Coquille board. There also is a remarkable collage effect for the lettering, which is rendered on a separate sheet with windows cut in the art itself to display the text. Craig Flessel Detective Comics #13 Cover Re-Creation Original Art (1994)....
Craig Flessel Detective Comics #13 Cover Re-Creation Original Art (1994). Batman was still over a year away from revolutionizing Detective Comics when Flessel delivered the gripping cover for issue #13 in 1938. In reconstructing that image for the present painting, Flessel retained both the spirit and the letter of the basic artwork while adding tones and textures and lending more expressive features to both the bad guy and the menaced policeman. Where the 1938 coloring job would have been performed by hired technicians, Flessel was in full command of the palette for the re-creation. He rewarded the opportunity with layers of free-flowing watercolors (using an extremely wet brush), and he augmented the black brushstrokes with crosshatching from a felt marker (a device that had not existed during the 1930s). Ink and watercolors over graphite on illustration board. Image area, 11" x 15.5", framed to 17.5" 22.25". Excellent condition.
