William E. Hill The Hill Page/Among Us Mortals Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-26-50 (News Syndicate Co., 1950). The ultra-realism of Hill's portraits remains an inspiration -- and so does his wry attitude toward human flaws, faults, and foibles. Here, in a strip titled "Fight Fans", the artist tackles the boxing fans and throws in a defeated contender for good measure. Detailed cross-hatch and stipple effects cause a near-photographic appearance. Ink over graphite on oversized Bristol board. Image area, 17.5" x 24". Some pasted-in art corrections. All text is paste-up and has discolored some. In Good condition.

Kelly Freas Crazy Magazine #1 Preliminary Cover Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1973). Freas had helped to define the goofy looks of Alfred E. Neuman as MAD Magazine's mascot. So who better-suited to design the bug-eyed symbol of Crazy? This conceptual piece shows only the character, who later was named Irving Nebbish. The finished version added the logotypes of MAD, Sick, National Lampoon, and Cracked, rival publications about to be dynamited to smithereens. Graphite (partially inked) on tracing stock. Image area, 9" x 11.5". Moderate age-toning, with one pronounced stain at ragged upper edge. Signed in ink. Very Good condition.

Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-21-64 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1964). Mopsy was a 1930s good-time gal who evolved into a modern-age liberated woman. She seems to be taking Leap Year a bit too seriously in this episode. Parker (by this stage, in her middle 50s) retained a youthful outlook throughout her career. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 8.5" x 10". Light toning, moderate staining at upper right, with light crinkling. Very Good condition.

Gus Mager Oily John the Detective Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (Hearst Newspapers, 1905). Oily John, a linchpin of Mager's brilliant and influential career, ran during September-October of 1905. The artist had larger projects ahead, including the famous Hawkshaw the Detective strip and the satirical Main Street. This splendid, large-scale example (undated as to day or month) is as much satire as humor, depicting the real-world journalist Tom Lawson as a fighter against the Standard Oil Trust. Oily John represents Big Oil. Editorial notes in margins include Mager's memoranda to himself. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Overall age toning, brittleness, and marginal nicks, scuffing, and tears. Image area, 11.5" x 17". Good condition.

Zack Mosley Smilin' Jack Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-18-50 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1950). Mosley has a great deal in common with Dick Tracy's Chester Gould -- an exaggerated, Expressionistic style, an arsenal of grimaces and tense body-language, and a dizzying sense of perspective. This intense spread involves a prison term for aviator Smilin' Jack's pal, Hot-Rod, and a grim-looking senior convict who may turn out to be a friend. How serious is it? Well, Smilin' Jack isn't smiling, for once. An interesting sidelight is Mosley's dedication (panel 7) to a convention of women pilots at Brackettville, TX. The large-scale piece is composed of separate panels glued to a backing-board. Image area, 25" x 17". Aside from some staining and paper-aging, the art is in Very Good condition.

T.E. Powers Our Moving Pictures Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-10-10 (Hearst Newspapers, 1910). An oversized, historic piece. Back when comics also were called "movies" or "moving pictures," pioneering artist Powers developed this feature as a satire of human misbehavior. The wordless gag involves an impulsive duel between an irate diner and a rude waiter. Both are lousy shots, but their incidental victim survives to dispense a sardonic closing gag. Partially tinted (after publication) by the artist. The handwritten title and caption (upper margin) were replaced in print by typeset text. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with watercolors. Image area, 18.5" x 13". Barring age toning and sporadic internal staining, in Very Good condition.

Dave Berg MAD's Dave Berg Looks, Listens and Laughs Paperback Book Cover Preliminary and Final Original Art (Warner Books, 1979). Al Kilgore Bullwinkle Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-15-64 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1964). There have been lampoons of King Kong ever since the movie arrived in 1933. Here is one of the best -- an episode from Kilgore's run on the Bullwinkle TV spinoff. Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale, at large on Kong's island, are on the run from one dinosaur after another. Movie buff Kilgore even throws in a reference to Willis O'Brien, the animator who brought to life the original Kong. Kilgore broke all the rules here by sidelining star players Rocky and Bullwinkle -- achieving a classic spoof, as a result. Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board. Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 5-2-49 (United Feature Syndicate, 1949). The extra-wide third panel puts Bushmiller's punch-line across white drawing the reader's eye in a swift move from left to right. The title of this installment (handwritten on reverse) is "Thankful Plankful." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18.75" x 5". Light toning, more pronounced at edges. Al Kilgore Bullwinkle Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-14-64 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1964). Cross a great cartoonist with a classic-movie buff, and you get Al Kilgore. His parody of 1933's King Kong accounts for a fine sequence of the Bullwinkle comic strip, with this episode standing as a high point. Here, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale (at large on Kong's island) are on the run from a charging dinosaur. Wordplay and slapstick galore. Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 17" x 4.75". Slight toning. In Excellent condition.

Chic Young Blondie Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-30-30 (King Features Syndicate, 1930). Blondie Boopadoop -- later, Mrs. Dagwood Bumstead -- plays Cupid for her youthful and glamorous mother, Ermentrude, in this early episode of the classic feature. One suitor won't leave Ermentrude alone, and the other is a self-absorbed dolt. Expressive body-language in every panel, and a bold overall composition. It would take a few years before Blondie's romance with Dagwood would find its level, but Young had found a solid narrative voice at this stage. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 16.5" x 15". The page is built in two tiers, joined by production tape on reverse. Moderately toned and in Very Good condition.

Al Kilgore Bullwinkle Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-11-64 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1964). From Walter Lantz' "King Klunk" in 1933 to the Harvey Kurtzman-Bill Elder MAD spoof in 1953, King Kong has supplied plenty of fodder for lampooners. Lesser known but every bit as great is Kilgore's Bullwinkle parody of Kong, starring Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. Here, those intrepid goofballs stumble across a dinosaur while exploring the island of Kong. Kilgore broke all the rules here by sidelining star players Rocky and Bullwinkle -- achieving a classic spoof, as a result. Frank Willard Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate, 1946-47). Willard's roughhousing feature is unique in that Moon Mullins features no noble or heroic characters -- everybody, from low-life Moonshine Mullins to juvenile-delinquent kid brother Kayo Mullins, is a no-account goofball and proud of it. These close-in-time examples feature some prime slapstick, loads of wordplay and careless judgment, and a touch of drunken revelry. Moon Mullins was so popular in its day that a famous boogie-woogie pianist, Aubrey W. Mullican, renamed himself as Moon Mullican in the strip's honor. Ed Nofziger (as "Marge") and Randy Henderson Little Lulu Daily Comic Strip dated 6-7-68 Original Art (Chicago Tribune, 1968). Nofziger, a versatile mimic, worked on many features besides his own titles. Here, he and inker Henderson channel the style of Lulu comic-book masters John Stanley and Irving Tripp, although the signature shows the nickname of Lulu's creator, Marjorie Henderson Buell. (She never worked on the comics spinoffs.) The gag offers a classic depiction of Lulu Moppet's chief annoyance, Tubby Tompkins. Ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board. Otto Soglow The Little King Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-3-58 (King Features Syndicate, 1958). Soglow, like Nancy's Ernie Bushmiller, was a master of visual economy -- using patches of black-ink gravity and brisk panel arrangements to draw the eye straight toward the punchline. Also like Bushmiller, Soglow disliked Abstract Expressionist art and occasionally devoted an episode to razzing the modernist painters. This razz is an especially funny one. Ink over graphite on smooth, heavyweight Bristol. Image area, 20" x 14.25". Light toning. Very Good condition.

Al Capp (as A.G. Caplin) Mr. Gilfeather Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Unpublished Original Art (The Associated Press, 1932). Capp was 22, just two years away from a breakthrough with Li'l Abner, when assigned to take over Dick Dorgan's Colonel Gilfeather, a riff on the famous Our Boarding House with Major Hoople. Capp re-tailored the strip as Mister Gilfeather, applied his own style -- and soon grew impatient with the feature's limitations. His work here is splendid, nonetheless, even on this unfinished example. First-rate brush-and-ink work over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9.5" x 9.5". Moderately toned. Mort Meskin Chesty Splash Page Unpublished Original Art (c. 1940s). Many enthusiasts know his Johnny Quick and Boys' Ranch and Mark Merlin stories, but few are aware of a Meskin character named Chesty Williams, "that tall talker from 10th Avenue." John Cullen Murphy Big Ben Bolt Partial Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-16-67 (King Features Syndicate, 1967). Murphy's crisp line and vivid characterizations enliven this single tier (excerpted from a three-tier Sunday spread). Long a favorite for the athletic feature Big Ben Bolt, Murphy already had prepared himself to join elder artist Hal Foster on the Prince Valiant feature, and within a few years Murphy would be juggling Ben Bolt with collaborative duties on Valiant. Although the present Bolt piece is not a full composition, it has a certain complete-ness that one seldom sees in such fragmentary images. The image area is 18.25" x 4", and aside from marginal yellowing, the ink-on-Bristol art is in Excellent condition.

Karl Axel Bäckman Storybook Cartoons Original Art Group of 8 (c. 1920s).... (Total: 8 Original Art)
Karl Axel Bäckman Storybook Cartoons Original Art Group of 8 (c. 1920s). Swedish-born Bäckman (1868-1941) excelled at the proto-comics narrative style involving single stories, told in sequential panels. His mischief-making bad boys (seen in four pieces, here) are close kin to the German Max und Moritz and the American Katzenjammer Kids. His clumsy, mournful elephant (three pieces) affords awkward humor and sorrow in the same strokes. These pieces recapture a lost episode in the history of classical gag-toons, and will appeal to anyone who loves the similarly conceived MAD comics work of Will Elder. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 9" x 5.5" to 5" x 7.25". Excellent condition.

Smith prefers to be addressed by his tribal name, Ohiyesa -- and author Ed Herron makes a point of using it (panel 4). Harry J. Tuthill The Bungle Family Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 3 (McNaught Syndicate, 1922-1936). George Bungle, Tuthill's masterful caricature of a harried householder, is primarily a slapstick figure in the full-page Sunday episodes of The Bungle Family. In the dailies represented here, Tuthill stretches out to allow Mr. Bungle a greater emotional range and depth of character. These fine examples range from 9-22-22 to 5-11-26 to 7-6-36, and all show Bungle to be a contemplative, sensible sort -- with a heroic streak, yet. Brilliant stuff from a master cartoonist. Ink over graphite on Bristol board; extensive use of Zipatone shading on the 1936 piece. Image areas, from 22.5" x 7" to 27.5" x 6.25". Moderate age-toning and occasional spot-staining. Alex Toth and Sy Barry All-American Western #123 Story Page 7 Original Art (DC Comics, 1951). Toth's art is in the groove on the Johnny Thunder feature -- one of the sneakier ways that DC kept the superhero comics alive during a postwar lull, by disguising them as Western yarns. (Johnny Thunder, like Batman and Superman, is the heroic alter-ego of a timid civilian.) Barry's burnished inks add textures foreshadowing those associated with the Flash and Green Lantern revivals of the 1950s-60s. Ink over graphite on Bristol board.
