Michael H. Price (as Jake Berkeley) Revenge of the Prowler #4 Unnumbered Story Page (Eclipse Comics, 1988)....
Michael H. Price (as Jake Berkeley) Revenge of the Prowler #4 Unnumbered Story Page (Eclipse Comics, 1988). Price designed this large-scale page to resemble a double-tier of newspaper dailies, representing the (imaginary) Prowler comic strip of the 1940s. The self-contained piece appeared as part of an eight-page backup story, revealing elements of the origins of Leo Kragg's secret life as a masked vigilante. Re-published in 2016 in Leo Kragg: Prowler Vol. 2 (Cremo Studios/4Winds Studio), by Price, Timothy Truman, Graham Nolan, Todd Camp, and John K. Snyder III. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Crescent Illustration board, with painted white retouching. Image area, 18" x 11". Moderate toning. Slight peeling in one dialogue balloon (upper tier, left). Very Good condition.

Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-6-44 (United Feature Syndicate, 1944)....
Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-6-44 (United Feature Syndicate, 1944). Nancy Ritz, posing as a fine artiste, indulges in a bit of shameless self-promotion in this brilliant example from Bushmiller's extended classic period of the midcentury. Sluggo Smith is (as usual) at a loss for words in the face of Nancy's conniving arrogance. Bushmiller had invented Theatre of the Absurd long before there was a term for it -- a big influence upon the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s-70s, and upon Bill Griffith's Zippy the Pinhead, in particular. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 5". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Olson's material is as funny as it is profuse, and this generous selection ranges from drolleries to knee-slappers and outright horselaugh-inducers. Opper takes a sympathetic look at street tramps, capitalizing on a saloon's free-lunch buffet -- to the chagrin of a wealthy bystander. The individual drawings add up to a quick narrative that foreshadows Opper's most famous feature, Happy Hooligan. George Wunder Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-26-52 (News Syndicate Co. Inc., 1952). Wunder had some big shoes to fill upon taking over Terry from Milton Caniff, and the strip's Wunder years proved a most rewarding stretch, for both the artwork and the droll writing. This lovely example confronts pilot Terry with a female stowaway, who warns all aboard against getting fresh. Ink over graphite on Bristol. Image area, 21.75" x 6.5". Gray's surviving family donated most of his Annie originals to Boston University -- making this example a scarce piece, indeed. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 6.25". Frank Bolle Red Mask #43 Splash Page Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954)....
Frank Bolle Red Mask #43 Splash Page Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954). The post-WWII decline among superheroes was hardly a matter of such characters vanishing. They merely retreated into the Western comics and other adventurous titles until a larger resurgence could take place. This choice example of costumed heroism pits frontier swashbucklers Red Mask (alias Redmask) and Black Phantom against a gang of killers. Bolle was a master at conveying hard-charging action with economical, spontaneous brush-strokes and bold, heavy-black ink gravity -- anticipating the Sin City style of Frank Miller. Harold Gray Little Orphan Annie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-28-67 (News Syndicate Co./Chicago Tribune, 1967). Creator Gray stayed in charge of Annie to almost the end of his life. Here is such a late example, with the artist in full command of the brushwork and crosshatching techniques that had served him since the 1920s. Here, Annie shares a quiet conversation with a preacher, who reveals a secret. This is one of the occasions where Gray added pupils to Annie's eyes, an exception to the strip's blank-eyeball rule. Gray's surviving family donated most of his Annie originals to Boston University -- making this example a scarce piece. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 6.25". Lilly Ewers Krazy Kat and The Ghost and His Wife Complete 1-Page Stories Original Art Group of 2 (c. 1920s). The mystery artist of the moment is Lilly Ewers, whose avant-garde comics pages, here, seem to draw on the Dadaist movement in art while anticipating the rise of Theatre of the Absurd. Ewers' take on Krazy Kat is a far cry from George Herriman's classic comic strip, although it contains references to some familiar Herriman trademarks. Ewers' ghostly page invokes surrealism and slapstick comedy. A cryptic rubber-stamp imprint on one page reads: "L. Ewers Designer." If not for the authentic age-toning and general condition of the stock, one might mistake these for examples of the 1980s-90s Punk Comix movement. Ink over graphite on lightweight page-stock. Image areas, 16" x 22" and 13" x 27.25". Very Good to Excellent condition.

Frank Bellamy Garth Daily Comic Strip #K240 Original Art dated 8-10-76 (Daily Mirror of London, 1976). This is one of the last few Garth episodes Frank Bellamy illustrated, as he died suddenly in July of 1976. As a result, this installment appeared in print posthumously. In this episode, the science-fiction/superman feature takes a turn into the provocative concept of "synthesisation of organic matter" -- an ahead-of-its time idea, typical of classic SF. The title hero, Garth, receives a summons to meet with the scientist responsible, and is astonished to learn that she is organic, not synthetic. Bellamy lays down some finely detailed inking over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.25", it is in Excellent condition.

Lynde created Rick O'Shay as a parody of the TV Westerns that were all the rage during the late 1950s. By 1959, the artist was developing a more serious streak -- this episode concerns a range feud -- but still emphasizing the humor. Howard "Howie" Post The Dropouts Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-28-72 (United Feature Syndicate, 1972). Even on a semi-deserted island, the community of Dropouts still practices gender bias. Harvey Comics mainstay Post made the transition from comic books to comic strips look easy, given his ability to handle any humorous art style. (The concern with tribal life also figures (more seriously) in Post's Anthro series at DC Comics.) The reverse of this page contains a pencilled note, unsigned, but likely in Post's handwriting. Ink over graphite with Zipatone shading on Bristol board. The image measures approximately 20.5" x 5.5". Excellent condition.
