Gaar Williams Wotta Life! Wotta Life! Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 3 (Chicago Tribune, 1928-29). Big panel cartoons from a big talent. Hard to believe that these were meant to be published at just a few inches in width, when the actual dimensions run to 13" x 13" or so. But the cartoonists' code of the day held that the bigger one drew, the sharper one's work would look in print. Williams' droll and observant character studies are lovely at any size, dealing here with the bridge-playing craze (undated in 1928); musical tastes (undated); and the career challenges faced by college graduates (6-26-29). Al Hartley Mrs. Lyons' Cubs Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-8-58 (Chicago Sun-Times, 1958). A bit of prehistory, here, of the Marvel Comics phenomenon: Three years before the breakouts of The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man, writer Stan Lee was struggling to keep that hobbled company afloat while attempting to develop outside moneymakers. One involved a deal with Boy Scouts of America to develop Mrs. Lyons' Cubs, a short-lived strip about Cub Scouting. The first artist was Atlas/Marvel's lead illustrator, Joe Maneely, who died soon after the launch. Hartley succeeded him, bringing a very Dondi-like appearance to the gags. George Rife Clark and Others New York News and Additional Illustrations (c. 1920s-1980s). A constant in this varied lot is the artists' unifying grasp of emotional expressiveness. Clark's dominant piece is a morning-rush scene in a busy 1950s household. Elsewhere, France's Berne Bellecour depicts a tense wartime encounter; Reginald Bathurst Birch delivers a friendly family scene from 1928; a New Jersey advertising agency promotes its services in a 1920s imitation of John Held Jr.; and Norway's Harold Kristofferson imagines a gathering of mythological woodland creatures, with hand-decorated framing matte. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 10" x 8" to 14" x 14". Varied media on varied page-stocks. Heinrich Kley "Feuerloscher gegen Ungeheuer [Fire Extinguishers against Monsters]" Illustration Original Art (c. 1920-40s). A wonderfully surreal piece. The more you look at it, the weirder it gets. The central figure is the strangest and most whimsical... it features a frog riding on a giant fire extinguisher which has a clownish human face on the plunger end of it. Monte Crews Liberty Magazine Cover Preliminary Original Art (McFadden Publ., 1939)....
Monte Crews Liberty Magazine Cover Preliminary Original Art (McFadden Publ., 1939). In many aspects, this large-scale conceptual piece is funnier and more engaging than its published version. Crews' figures are more cartoony (less realistic) than those that landed on the February-of-'39 cover, and the boy's sense of indignation here seems angrier. (You'd be angry, too, if some wisenheimer magician pulled a pair of pink bloomers out from under your sweater.) Then, too, there's the rubbery fluidity of Crews' layered watercolor style, as opposed to the more formal look he achieved with oils on the final painting. Watercolors on heavy illustration board. Image area, 19.5" x 25.5". Excellent condition.

Neal Adams - Superman Illustration Original Art (c. 2000s). A stunning piece that fully captures the Man of Steel in a full figure flight image. Neal Adams' covers for many DC books, especially the Superman-related titles, were an integral part of DC's evolution from the Silver Age to the Bronze Age of Comics. In essence, as comics grew up, so did their art. This impressive piece is so polished and finished that at first glance it appears to be a print instead of original art! Mike Allred Wednesday Comics #7 "Metamorpho" Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 2009)....
Mike Allred Wednesday Comics #7 "Metamorpho" Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 2009). Writer Neil Gaiman's reinvention of the 1960s hero Metamorpho, the Element Man brings out the best in Allred, who is working here at an immense scale twice the size of a conventional modern-day page. The image resurrects a favorite old-school villain, Algon, the Ancient Element Man, and features supporting characters Simon Stagg, Java the Apeman, and Sapphire Stagg. Allred nods persuasively to the style of original Metamorpho artist Ramona Fradon. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 29.25". Light toning and marginal creasing. Excellent condition.

Don Heck Avengers #37 Partial Splash Page 1 Captain America Original Art (Marvel, 1967). ...
Don Heck Avengers #37 Partial Splash Page 1 Captain America Original Art (Marvel, 1967). The partial piece of the splash page is a trimmed element that includes the entire figure of Captain America and portions surrounding him. The patch measures 9.75" tall by 6" wide (at its widest). It is unknown if this was a replacement art patch on the original art page, or if it was trimmed out later for other usage. It is possible that this image was the inspiration for the redrawn pose of Captain America in the artwork for the 1967 "Merry Marvel Marching Society" record. This image from Avengers #37 was created in ink over graphite with some white paint art correction. There is a stain on Cap's chest, and the item is irregularly trimmed. After the fact, it has been affixed directly to another piece of Bristol board (stripped-in with tape on the reverse side) that has been produced to recreate the surrounding splash page area. This was done by printing the original art in low-res grey ink and inking with markers. All artwork and text on the page (other than that on the Captain America patch piece) is an art reproduction by persons unknown. In Very Good condition
