Denis Kitchen Mom's Homemade Comics #3 Partial Story Original Art Group of 10 (Kitchen Sink, 1971).... (Total: 10 Items)
Denis Kitchen Mom's Homemade Comics #3 Partial Story Original Art Group of 10 (Kitchen Sink, 1971). Here's the origin story of "precocious" little "Ingrid the Bitch," who relates the wild story of her life, including her somewhat sordid relationship with her dog, Pooch. We'll go ahead and state up-front that "Ingrid" is portrayed by an adult midget, so please don't get upset, people! Included are Pages 1-7 of the nine-page story that is featured in the beginning of the issue; it is missing Pages 8 and 9. Page seven includes a large area with rubylith film and a note for the printer to drop in art from another source; a photocopy of that missing art is included. What appears to be a separate story titled "Hooligan's Bar" from later in the issue is actually a three-page second part to Ingrid's story, as she and Pooch are featured after the first page. All feature Denis Kitchen's wonderful artwork, created in ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on illustration board. Per-page image size is approximately 8" x 12". There are a few pasted-on art corrections made by Kitchen, and the artboard edges have a slight bit of handling wear; also, some of the Zipatone has yellowed a bit. There is a very strong, musty odor on the pages that cannot be ignored, putting it in Fair condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.

Barry Smith, Sal Buscema, Dan Adkins, and Chic Stone Conan the Barbarian #23 Story Page 16 Original Art (Marvel, 1973). The story "The Shadow of the Vulture" was originally to appear in issue #22, but the pencil art was lost in transit. As a result, enterprising editor Roy Thomas got together a group of inkers and had them work on vellum on top of copies of the original pencil work, thus saving the issue. Conan is a bound captive on this page, but that off-panel voice at the bottom is none other than Red Sonya, so you know there will be swordplay to follow! The image area on this page of ink work measures 10" x 15". All captions and word balloons are hand-lettered paste-ups, some of which are missing. The vellum is slightly toned, as are the paste-ups. In otherwise Very Good condition. Note: There is no pencil work on this page.

Milton Caniff Steve Canyon Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-10-47 (Sun and Times Co., 1947). Just shy of a being a year old, this first-year strip features Steve Canyon's early "skinny Steve" look. Great shots of him and Deen Wilderness, paired with Happy Easter, show how well Caniff could mix realistic looking people with comic caricatures and make it work smoothly. He was a master of the medium by anyone's standards. This daily, titled "Jolly Good Follow", was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 21.75" x 6.5". Swashbuckler Unidentified Comic Book Cover Original Art (c. 1950s). This dashing young man with his flashing steel blade is in the mold of D'Artagnan of the Musketeers by way of Errol Flynn! An exciting piece by an unknown artist for an unidentified publication. Created in ink over graphite on 15" x 19" illustration board with an image area of approximately 13.75" x 15". The board is toned, with frame burn from a previous mat. The reverse side of the board has the graphite rough layout for this cover. After the fact, the board has been extended 4" to add low-res reproductions of the logo and publication elements (including a text box at the bottom). While the overall appearance is to mimic the Pirates Comics series by Hillman Periodicals, this was not a published cover for that series. Wayne Boring Superman in Flight Illustration Original Art and Private Correspondence Group of 2 (1959).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
Wayne Boring Superman in Flight Illustration Original Art and Private Correspondence Group of 2 (1959). This unique (unpublished) view of Superman dates from Boring's peak period as a key illustrator of both the comic strip and the comic-book stories. Originally hired as an assistant to co-creator Joe Shuster, Boring came into his own as a defining Superman artist as the 1940s gave way to the 1950s. His unique take on the character is distinguished by airborne poses that resemble ballet more so than flight -- precisely the case with the present selection. The piece, designed as a gift to a niece, is a masterful concoction of graphite, ink, and lightly applied watercolors on Bristol board. An accompanying typewritten letter (on personalized stationery) finds Boring in a chatty and outgoing frame of mind. The image area measures 6" x 9", matted to 8" x 11". Moderate toning and a small moisture-stain at the lower right. Excellent condition.

Joe Jusko Captain America Unreleased Movie Poster Painting Illustration Original Art (21st Century Film Corp./Marvel Enterprises, 1989). From the Captain America movie that starred Matt Salinger as Cap, and Scott Paulin as the Italian Red Skull, this painting features both actors and plenty of action! It even has the infamous "shackled to the rocket" scene that lead to Cap's time as an ice cube. This poster was unpublished and unreleased because the film itself was unreleased. The movie became a notorious B-Movie cult-favorite because of that. Although it appears on many fans "Worst Super-Hero Movie Ever" list, it is beloved for its campiness and weird quirks. Joe Jusko's painting is easily the high-water mark for this film! It is a fantastic image that perfectly captures ol' Winghead. The gouache painting is signed and dated in the lower right of the 16" x 24" image area. Matted to 22" x 30" and in Excellent condition.

Most anyone who was reading independent comics back then will recall this ever-so-slightly insane character, who began at Capital Comics and then moved over to First Comics. The cover is rendered wonderfully by Butler, whom you might know from his role-playing game art as well as his comic book work. Signed at lower left, and also signed and inscribed on the back of the piece. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 16.5". Excellent condition.

Berke Breathed Bloom County Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 1-18-87 (Washington Post Writers Group, 1987). Oliver Wendell Jones is fascinated by the cosmos. The Sunday was created in ink and blue pencil on bright white Bristol board with an image area of 19.5" x 13.5". The logo is a printed paste-up. The art in the last panel is mostly a stat of the art from Panel 3. Much of the text is paste-up as well. Overall in Excellent condition.

Richard F. Outcault Buster Brown Voting Illustration Original Art (1904)....
Richard F. Outcault Buster Brown Voting Illustration Original Art (1904). Buster Brown is encouraging everyone to get out the vote on this wonderful large panel illustration in the style of the "Resolved" last-panel of his regular Buster Brown feature. When this was created the scamp's own comic strip was only in its second year. The panel was created in ink and watercolor on 9.5" x 10.75" Bristol board. Signed in the image area, and also personalized and dated 8-8-1905 in that area (although the ink has faded almost completely). The board has some minor corner wear; however, overall it is in Excellent condition. This would be a fantastic lot even if that were the only thing included. But amazingly enough, there are all kind of fantastic Buster Brown collectibles that have been used by Dan Makara to create a fabulous frame to house this beauty! The artwork is set in a special mat that is covered with vintage post cards, valentine's cards, newspaper clippings, and other Buster Brown ephemera for a dizzying effect. This is in turn set with a Plexiglas front into a wooden frame festooned with Buster Brown pinback buttons, and a Buster Brown belt buckle in the lower center. There are 11 buttons, each different. One of them is a "Buster Brown Blue Ribbon Shoes" pin, and the other 10 are all "Buster Brown Hose Supporter" buttons. The Hake's Price Guide to Pop Culture Memorabilia says that these pinbacks are worth approximately $20 each in Good condition. The belt buckle is not listed. It is in Excellent condition, affixed to the frame. The detailed Dan Makara frame can be seen online at HA.com.

The series introduced Dick Dastardly and his dog Muttley, who spun-off into their own series Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines (aka "Stop the Pigeon" due to the catchy theme song). Also included separately is the acetate overlay that has the book title painted on it. But hold on to your horsepower there Peter Perfect, because this group comes with some amazing extra features! Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133 Splash Page 20 Original Art (DC, 1970). "Kirby is HERE!" proclaimed the cover header banner. Kirby was indeed at DC, and this landmark issue was the start of his bold new Fourth World saga. This issue introduced a new Newsboy Legion, their Whiz Wagon, Morgan Edge, Intergang, and the Outsiders who lived in the Wild Area. Every issue of this four-pronged saga seemed to introduce more original characters and content. Kirby was just bursting with ideas. The collapse of the Underground Comix movement (c. 1975) left many of its pioneers at loose ends, bereft of the outlets and sense of community that a unified and prolific Underground scene had provided. Groundbreaking artist Spain found new avenues by sublimating his radical political interests to the frankly raunchy concerns of Fling magazine. This voyeuristic montage is representative of that period -- and as polished technically as anything the artist had done, up to the 1980s. Alley Oop, that rip-snorting time-traveling caveman, confronts an ancient dragon who might be an ancestor of Marvel Comics' Fin Fang Foom -- the resemblance is striking. Even more striking is Hamlin's mastery of large-scale cinematic page composition, not to mention his ability to convey an illusion of three dimensions by stacking the elements of a panel in the manner of stage-design flats. And speaking of ancestry, Oop himself appears to have had a descendant in Ancient China named Oop Wu Sing. Magnificent stuff, here. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24.25" x 18". Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez Fling Magazine Story Page from "The Cheese Bit" Original Art Panel Page (Miller Publ., c. 1980s). Raunchy in the extreme, this sequence from a crime-comics yarn for the hedonistic Fling magazine is a far cry from the radical-revolutionary comics that Spain had delivered as a pioneer of the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s-70s. The artist's narrative intensity and technical skills are present in full measure -- and his Fling assignments kept groceries on the table during a long dry spell for the Underground publishers. Ink and watercolors/wax pencils over graphite on illustration board. Image area, 11" x 14/25". Light toning. Excellent condition.

This one is a far cry from Rodriguez' more personal work as a radical political activist and eminent talent of the Underground Comix movement.
