Worth Brehm Cosmopolitan Magazine Original Art for Penrod's Little Cousin (International Magazine Co., 1916) Booth Tarkington's Penrod series -- tales of mischief, in the vein of Mark Twain -- inspired this unnerving image to accompany the misadventures of Ronald Passloe, an evil cousin to Penrod Schofield. Brehm designed the large-scale art as a double-page spread. The child's malicious streak is amply well represented, here, but the attack is less severe than it might appear: He is shooting a stream of water from a squirt-gun. Graphite with fingertip-smudging effects on Whatman illustration board. Image area, 25" x 12.5". Excellent condition.

Bob Powell Green Hornet #22: "Spirit of '76" Story Page 9 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1945). The Spirit of '76, a costumed hero of World War II, thwarts an enemy attack. Powell's style is maturing rapidly, here -- several years before the great cartoonist would find his truer level as a leading horror/SF illustrator. Though unrelated to Will Eisner's Spirit franchise, this character is patently a takeoff on Powell's former boss, Eisner, with a similar mask and Revolutionary Era clothing in place of a suit-and-tie wardrobe. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white retouching. Image area, 13" x 18". Light pencil marks (lettering guidelines) remain visible -- a vivid reminder of Powell's painstaking approach, inasmuch as he handled the lettering, too. Light toning. Excellent condition. David Gantz Moxy Comic Strip Original Promotional Art (Sponsored Comics, Inc., 1959). Gantz' variety-filled career ranged from humor to horror, with interludes in the Funny Animal genre. Bob Bolling Little Archie Giant Comics: "Bubble Gum Blues" Partial Story Original Art Group of 7 (Archie Comics, 1958). A masterstroke for the Archie line was the development of a kid-stuff version of the long-running teenage series. Timed to cash in on the TV popularity of Hal Roach's Little Rascals films (and to complete with Dell's Little Rascals comics), the Little Archie tales boast slapstick galore, with junior versions of Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, and the rest of the gang, and a sense of community that suggests the beginnings of a comprehensive Archie Universe. This bright story gives Bolling's buoyant artwork a grand showcase, with a boys-vs.-girls storyline that reflects the influence of John Stanley's concurrent Little Lulu books. The grouping covers Pages 1-7 of a 10-pager. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". Moderate toning, missing splash-page logo, and scattered staining. Very Good condition.

Fred Thomas Good Ol' Bo Tryout Sunday Comic Strip Preliminary Original Art (c. 1960s)....
Fred Thomas Good Ol' Bo Tryout Sunday Comic Strip Preliminary Original Art (c. 1960s). Thomas sought to outgrow his successful line of one-shot gag 'toons and the single-panel Long Shots strip, and so he concocted Good Ol' Bo as more of a sustained-narrative Sunday-funnies presentation. The running joke was to have Bo (short for Hobo) and his fellow derelicts offer cynical observations on mainstream society. In this pencils-only page of pilot-strip breakdowns, the pals seem fascinated by a comic strip about a dog and a flying doghouse -- a clever allusion to a running gag in Charles Schulz's Peanuts. Good Ol' Bo never made it past the conceptual stages, but the humor shines through in every panel. Graphite on Bristol board, built in three conjoined tiers. Image area, 18.5" x 13". Moderate toning and edge-staining. Very Good condition.

Gil Kane Captain Marvel #17 Story Page 13 Preliminary Artwork Original Art (Marvel, 1969)....
Gil Kane Captain Marvel #17 Story Page 13 Preliminary Artwork Original Art (Marvel, 1969). One of the most influential and important pages in the saga of both Captain Mar-Vell and young Rick Jones! And that's saying a lot, considering that one of them is a Kree soldier who turned his back on his alien heritage to protect Earth, and the other one is the ex-sidekick for the Hulk, the Avengers, and Captain America! This is the page where Rick dons the Nega-Bands that free Captain Mar-Vell from the Negative Zone, and bond the two of them together for a very long time. A key page to be sure! Produced in loose graphite, the stunning layout is on 12" x 19" paper and in Excellent condition.

Robert Fuqua Mammoth Western Magazine #1 Original Art (Ziff-Davis Publ., 1945). A mighty big job of artwork, given its origins in a mighty small pulp magazine: Fuqua's action-packed brawl scene measures almost two feet in width, and yet its appearance in print covered about half that space. The artist needed the vast expanse, of course, to accommodate a wealth of lifelike detail and seemingly palpable textures. John Celardo Kaanga #11 Story Page 6 Original Art (Fiction House, 1952). This high-adventure page derives from a 1947 story in Jungle Comics #88 -- essentially the same artwork, but condensed and re-cut to fit a briefer page-count. A fairly smooth job of trimming keeps the upper four panels intact and creates a lower tier from three distinct panels. Kaanga, a Tarzan-like hero, rescues a princess from a rebellion and receives a smooch in return. Ink over graphite on DuoTone chemical-shading board, intercut with Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". The patchwork reconstruction (with extensive re-lettering and retouching) has caused pronounced age-toning and adhesive staining, with scattered loosened patches. Good condition.
