Tom Yeates Alien Encounters #1 Complete 4-Page Story "Watcher from the Skies" Original Art (FantaCo Enterprises, 1981). Yeates achieves an EC Comics-style excellence in a compact and merciless story about the 18th Century's slave-trafficking trade and a violent comeuppance for one crew of slavers. Hardly giving away too much to note that an outer-space agency is responsible for the rescue of the captives -- the source-magazine's title is Alien Encounters, after all. The story represents a transitional phase from the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s-70s into the independent-comics boom of the earlier 1980s. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". There is light toning, scattered blue-line editorial markings, and Page 3 has an original art paste-up. John Albano Plop! #22: "The Kicking Man" Complete 5-Page Story Original Art (DC Comics, 1976). Though better known as a writer -- and co-creator of the Gothic Western series Jonah Hex -- Albano demonstrated a formidable cartooning talent with such pieces as this grimly humorous exercise. Plop! was DC's answer to MAD Magazine, and "The Kicking Man" serves that imperative like a cross between MAD and DC's own House of Mystery (another vehicle for Albano). The story concerns a mean-spirited hick with the habit of kicking anything in his path. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning, marginal adhesive staining, scattered blue-line editorial marks. The bottom tier of Page 2 is attached with production tape from the reverse side. Excellent condition.

Art Radebaugh Jet Swift and His Science Stamps Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-2-63 (Chicago Tribune, 1963). Radebaugh's bizarre SF feature, Closer than We Think, had thrived during 1957-63 but was replaced abruptly by his pure-science feature, Jet Swift and His Science Stamps -- which proved to be a short-lived attraction. A brilliantly designed strip, however obscure, Jet Swift takes an encyclopedia-style approach to various natural phenomena, such as the importance of water in its natural state. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with Craftint Duo-Tone inserts (chemical shading). The red-ink highlights in each panel were applied as guides for the color-engraving department. Image area, 21" x 9.5". Some panel-adhesive patches have loosened. Very Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.

Irwin Hasen Dondi Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 11 (Chicago Tribune, 1958).... (Total: 11 Original Art)
Irwin Hasen Dondi Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 11 (Chicago Tribune, 1958). Beautifully drawn in Hasen's painterly style, with lush and fluid brushwork, Dondi is a masculine variation on Little Orphan Annie, centered upon the perils faced by an outcast child in a world of treacheries and intrigues. Dondi, however, is no helpless character -- he's resilient and good-natured, and as heroic as the more benevolent adults in his orbit. These fine episodes cover a great deal of adventurous ground, with impeccably drawn facial studies and fine cinematic compositions. (Hasen also is fondly remembered as a key contributor to the Green Lantern comic-book stories of the 1940s.) Dates, all from 1958, are 7-5, 7-12, 7-19, 7-26, 8-2, 8-9, 8-16, 8-23, 8-30, 9-6, and 9-13. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition. Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: "David Berkowitz: Son of Sam" Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). From the Great Serial Killer Trading-Card Scare of the 1990s: Price's seminal work of true-crime art and journalism yields this intense portrait of one of the last century's more notorious psychotic murderers. (Berkowitz provided the backhanded inspiration for an equally notorious film, 1980's Maniac.) Price's background as a police suspect-sketch artist and courtroom portraitist serves well in this context, and the original is significantly larger than the published size. Alan Kupperberg Quack #4 Complete 7-Page Story "On the Skids: Into the Breach" Original Art Group of 13 (Star*Reac... (Total: 13 Items)
Alan Kupperberg Quack #4 Complete 7-Page Story "On the Skids: Into the Breach" Original Art Group of 13 (Star*Reach, 1977). How does a 7-page story have 13 pieces of art? Because it was created as a 10-page story that was trimmed down to be just a 7-page story with some re-drawn pages. This anthropomorphic time-twisting romp stars a thinly disguised Alan Kupperberg and Howard Chaykin. It was originally scheduled to be published in Quack #3 but was pushed to issue #4. Produced as a 10-page story in ink and ink wash over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". When the edict came down to trim the page count, Page 5 was cut in half, with panels from Page 6 added to it. Then all-new pages were created for Pages 6 and 7. As a result, the original Pages 6-10 were never published at all. In fact, they are likely seen here for the first time in decades. The pages are slightly toned; story title is a hand letter text paste-up. There are original art correction paste-up panels on several pages. The pages cut-up for the page reduction are included. Overall in Very Good condition.

Willy Pogany Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Original Art (E.P. Dutton & Co., 1929)....
Willy Pogany Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Original Art (E.P. Dutton & Co., 1929). Pogany, best known for his reinterpretations of ancient mythology, created this striking miniature image of Lewis Carroll's Alice, shrinking, among a wealth of additional such pieces. This one recaptures Carroll's creepy-but-playful spirit while injecting a modernistic zest quite different from Sir John Tenniel's initial suite of Alice illustrations. Long out of print, the collected Pogany Alice can be found today in a 2009 revival edition from Dover Classics. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 7.25" x 4". Moderate toning. Adele Targonski Circus Coloring Book Cover Original Art Cover (Whitman Publ., 1961). The coloring-book craze of midcentury last yielded many lively designs -- few so vivid or so suited to the subject as this delightful clown-face image. Targonski's color-saturated painting retains its vibrant hues. Her signature (lower right, vertical) unfortunately was cropped out in the printing phase; it is self-evident in the original. Tempera paints on Bristol board. The hand-painted title appears as a transparent overlay, like a cartoon cel. Adhesive staining appears on the overlay. Originally mounted to a sheet of illustration board; adhesive has loosened, but the painting itself is in Excellent condition. Image area, 8" x 11". Accompanied by a well-preserved copy of the book.

Joe Jusko Mars Attacks Invasion "Stan Lee Strikes" Poster Original Preliminary Art plus Limited-Edition Print (Topps Co. and Comikaze, 2013). Mars Attacks, a pop-culture phenomenon since 1962, marked its 51st year with a tie-in with comics pioneer Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles. Lee seems a natural choice to engage with Topps' Martian invaders, inasmuch as his efforts at Marvel Comics during 1961-62 had helped to transform the funnybook landscape in much the same way that Topps had revolutionized the trading-card medium. Jusko's conceptual art (8.5" x 6.25, in photo-marker pencil on Bristol board) provides a decisive template for the finished artwork, which is reproduced here as a large-scale poster (21.5" x 17"). The limited print, #24/25, sports the signatures of both Lee and Jusko. Each selection is in Excellent condition.

Bill Hughes Zorro Rides Again Film-Carton Cover Original Painting (Republic Pictures, c. 1980s)....
Bill Hughes Zorro Rides Again Film-Carton Cover Original Painting (Republic Pictures, c. 1980s). Republic once produced the most popular Saturday-matinée serials, back in the 1940s-50s. After the serials faded away and Republic imploded, the remnants of the company retrenched by condensing the old-time cliffhangers into short films for the home-movie market. Such became the fate of Zorro Rides Again (1937), a three-hours-plus serial -- condensed to a 10-minute running time. Best thing about the 8mm package was Hughes' excellent painting, which has been well-preserved. Acrylics on illustration board. Image area, 9" x 9", matted to 12" x 16". Excellent condition.
