Owen Fitzgerald (attributed) Dennis the Menace Story Pages Group of 7 (Hallden/Fawcett, 1960).... (Total: 7 Original Art)
Owen Fitzgerald (attributed) Dennis the Menace Story Pages Group of 7 (Hallden/Fawcett, 1960). Dennis Mitchell does what comes naturally in this group of seven comic book pages. Most of the Dennis comic books were not by Hank Ketcham; Fred Toole was the writer and main artists were Al Wiseman and Owen Fitzgerald. We believe Mr. Fitzgerald was responsible for this art, which includes the opening page of "The Day the Sun Went Out" (from Dennis the Menace #47), and six pages from the 1960 Dennis the Menace Fun Book. The first two pages from story "The Secret Life of Dennis Mitchell" are included, plus four more, one with a "naked" Dennis (it's part of two pages noted as "Scouts" in the bottom right corner) and two pages noted as "Cool." The art is in ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an average image area measuring 12.5" x 18.5". Slight water damage on all; overall condition is Good.

Scott Morse Plastic Man #12 Partial Story Original Art Group of 7 (DC Comics, 2005).... (Total: 7 Original Art)
Scott Morse Plastic Man #12 Partial Story Original Art Group of 7 (DC Comics, 2005). The surreal fugues of Plastic Man's originator, Jack Cole, find a logical culmination in these rubber-reality pages from Morse -- painted in a Daliesque dreamlike style that makes the very pages look as though they might have the texture of rubber. The sequence involves a running battle between Plastic Man and a bad guy naked Stickyfinger -- DC's answer to Marvel Comics' Paste-Pot Pete, only goofier. Morse captures the frenzy of Cole without attempting to duplicate the creator's techniques. Watercolor and airbrush/spatter over graphite on heavyweight illustration board, with cel-like overlays for lettering and visual effects. Image area, 9" x 14". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Marmaduke, the comics' most boisterous Great Dane, is in the doghouse again, as he is apparently quite the lothario, in this delightful installment. Tony Sgroi and Gene Wolfe Tip Top Tales #2464: "Bugs Bunny's Chimney Adventure" Original Art (Warners/Whitman Publ., 1963) Just as Mel Blanc captured ideally the smart-aleck vocal mannerisms of Bugs Bunny, so Sgroi and Wolfe nail the visual aspect. (Interesting to note that Sgroi worked primarily for a rival studio, Hanna-Barbera.) Whitman's answer to Simon & Schuster's Little Golden Books line was the Tip Top series -- slender hardcovers for the juvenile trade, generously illustrated. The style here recalls Robert McKimson's famous crayon-and-watercolor pieces for Capitol Records' Bugs Bunny storybook-record albums of the 1940s and '50s. Gouache on illustration board. Image area, 8.5" x 5.5". Pronounced age-toning and spot-staining, with speckled deterioration around Bugs' head. Good condition.

William Donahey The Teenie Weenies Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-31-55 (News Syndicate Co., 1955). The Teenie Weenies dates from 1912, originally conceived as a homage to Palmer Cox's The Brownies. Donahey would continue the strip for nearly 60 years -- combining a talent for wild-animal drawings with an affinity for cartooning. Each installment is distinguished by one large illustration (part-realistic, part-cartoon), to be accompanied by a storybook-style narrative text. A recurring feature is an inset of a featured character, designed like a paper doll. This gem is fashioned from ink over graphite on heavy Bristol board, with an image area of 13.25" x 8.5". Faint toning, and a few small stain in the borders. In otherwise Excellent condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: "Burke & Hare: Body Snatchers" Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). The fiendish exploits of William Burke and William Hare inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror story, "The Body Snatcher" (1884), but no fictional account can rival the factual history for malicious ferocity. Burke and Hare turned from graverobbing to murder in 1827, the better to supply a prominent physician with cadavers for research. Price's dual portrait, based upon period engravings, is a centerpiece of his three-volume set of true-crime folios. Ink, crayon, and stripped Zipatone shading over graphite on REGCO-brand Bristol board. Image area, 13.5" x 9". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: "Donna Maria Alvarez: Mummifier" Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). A rancher's daughter in Depression-era Mexico, Donna Maria Alvarez shocked the nation when revealed as the strangler of several infants -- all mummified, in a chemical process that at first fooled the authorities into believing them ancient. The notoriety earned the murderer a niche in Bloody Visions, the card-folio set that launched the Great Serial Killer Trading-Card Controversy of the 1990s. The large-scale original draws upon Price's background as a police suspect-sketch artist. Ink, crayon, and painted white highlights over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Jay Lynch Garbage Pail Kids All-New Series 2 Base Set #34a: "Toe-Jam Jan" Original Preliminary Art (Topps, 2004). After the Underground Comix movement had faded during the 1970s, pioneer Lynch (of Bijou Funnies) retrenched as a gagman for Topps' gross-out trading-cards line. This conceptual piece eventually was developed along different lines, as "Toe-Jam Sam," with essentially the same profound message. The original concept was restored for a 2017 Jay Lynch Memorial Set. A parody of the wholesome Cabbage Patch dolls of the 1980s, Garbage Pail Kids has outlived its inspiration by two generations. Woody Woodpecker #179 Partial Story Original Art Group of 9 (Gold Key/Western, 1979)... (Total: 9 Original Art)
Woody Woodpecker #179 Partial Story Original Art Group of 9 (Gold Key/Western, 1979) The unbilled talents behind this story can be seen taking cues right and left from Carl Barks, master of the rival Disney Studios' Donald Duck comics. The first-rate writing places Woody Woodpecker and his niece and nephew, Splinter and Knothead, in an exotic Equatorial setting and subjects them to treacherous intrigues en route to an upbeat ending. The story, "The Mystery Ball," has to do with legends of the ancient Incas and the 16th century's Spanish Conquest. The art is crisp and cinematically varied. An extraordinarily fine example of the Funny Animal genre. Included are page #s 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Whitman's Old Maid Playing Cards Original Art Group of 22 (Whitman Publ., 1975).... (Total: 22 Original Art)
Whitman's Old Maid Playing Cards Original Art Group of 23 (Whitman Publ., 1975). This splendid set of fully painted miniatures represents one of the more imaginatively modernized decks in the long history of that popular card game. Old Maid has been around since the 17th century, the pair-forming drill can be played with any ordinary deck, but it's always much more special when equipped with such custom-made cards as this one. Here, the unbilled artist lends character and humor to each symbolic personality, often with a touch of slapstick comedy. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 7.5" x 5.5" (cards) and 8" x 11" (main title). Scattered light speckling and age-toning, but overall in Excellent condition.

William E. Hill Among Us Mortals/The Hill Page Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-3-52 (News Syndicate, 1952). Hill's satirical feature spans approximately half of the 20th century -- he never ran out of material, because the human species is an endless chain of weirdos and eccentrics. This splendid example, "Why They Stay Single," dissects nine personalities ill-suited to marriage. As the social critic Franklin P. Adams wrote in 1917: "You think [Hill's] pictures look like somebody you know... But they don't; they look like you. Or like me. He draws the folks everybody knows." The captions are intact -- an unusual condition for a Hill Page, inasmuch as the artist used a chemically unstable glue to patch in the texts. Light tanning and adhesive staining. Very Good condition.

William E. Hill Among Us Mortals/The Hill Page Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-17-49 (News Syndicate, 1949). Hill's long-running satire of quirky personalities works on two levels: As brilliant, caricatured portraiture, and as social criticism -- practically a genetic template for the modern-day work of Drew Friedman. This splendid specimen dissects the more annoying guests and inmates of a metropolitan hospital, centered upon the scary presence of a nurse with a hypodermic fetish. Ink over graphite and blue-wax pencil on two-ply kid-finish bond, with an image area of 17.5" x 22.5". Original pasted-in lettering (typeset) is stained by adhesive residue. Blue shading indicates instructions for the engraver. Moderate tanning and marginal staining. Good condition.
