Charles Werner Those Banana Republics!! Single-Panel Editorial Comic Strip Original Art (Indianapolis Star, 1941). The citizens of Panama (distilled to one figure) look on approvingly as their pro-Hitler president, Arnufulo Arias Madrid, is overthrown in a coup. Arias had fallen into popular disfavor for such Nazi-styled tactics as conducting a localized Holocaust against black West Indians. Weber's sense of humor is such that he depicts Arias taking a pratfall on a slick banana peel -- symbolic of the local agrarian economy. Brilliant stuff from a great editorialist. Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella All Star Western #59 Story Page 6 Original Art (DC Comics, 1951). All Star Western was an extension of All Star Comics, which had featured the Justice Society during World War II and beyond. The near-collapse, postwar, of the superhero genre triggered a surge in frontier adventure, with essentially the same crew of action-master artists. This splendid page from the Trigger Twins internal series finds a small-town sheriff flabbergasted by the strange comings and goings of an elusive criminal. Infantino (signed at lower right) is beginning to experiment with such sophisticated, symbolic page-design techniques as he would develop further during the superhero renaissance of the 1950s-'60s. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 20". Page shows pronounced wrinkling and edge-staining, with ragged edges. One line of dialogue-lettering is missing. Good condition. Frank King Gasoline Alley Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-15-39 (Chicago Tribune, 1939). Gasoline Alley, one of the longest-running comic strips, has enjoyed a uniformly accomplished succession of artists since its arrival in 1918. Still, nobody can top the originator, King, in his extended prime of accomplishment. This splendid example showcases King's ability to convey a quietly menacing tone without extravagant effects: Skeezix Wallet, an innocent adrift, finds himself at the mercy of two opportunistic strangers. Jim Holdaway Modesty Blaise #1550 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Times Mirror, 1968)....
Jim Holdaway Modesty Blaise #1550 Daily Comic Strip Original Art (London Times Mirror, 1968). Many remarkable qualities about this classic Modesty Blaise episode, from arguably the series' finest artist. For one important thing, unlike many Holdaway strips, the reverse surface here is intact, bearing the authentic W-N Fashion Plate Board symbols; most Holdaways in circulation have had the reverse surface peeled, revealing a roughened surface. The scenic value is immense, including one nighttime seascape; one suspenseful underwater panel; and one dynamic two-shot close-up. A brilliant example of one of the medium's hippest and most widely acclaimed crime-and-intrigue features. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 6". Excellent condition.

The cinematic angles and shadowplay are amazing. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with Zipatone (yellowed) shading. Image area, 18.76" x 6". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.

Stanley Link Ching Chow Daily Gag-Panel Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (News Syndicate, 1950-52). Link was best known for the horror-and-humor strip Tiny Tim, but he also excelled at the simple homilies of Ching Chow, in which a caricatured Chinese philosopher would dispense wise, un-ironic sayings. Like his cartoonist pal Jimmy Hatlo (of They'll Do It Every Time), Link made a practice of inviting ideas from the readers and then thanking them in print. In one of these keen examples, Link recognizes Annette Victorin of Berwin, IL (8-15-52). The additional panels are dated 6-20-50, 7-18-52, and 9-8-52. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. An expressive and emotive sequence from a seminal title in the independent, creator-controlled comics movement of the 1980s. John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga MGM's Marvelous Wizard of Oz #1 Story Page 52 and Conan Illustration Original Art (Marvel/DC, 1975). Dorothy has a confrontation with the Wicked Witch on this page. This tabloid sized comic was the very first cross-company co-publishing venture between Marvel Comics and DC Comics. The ink over graphite page has an image area of 10.5" x 14.5" on Bristol board. Of note, it hides a wonderful secret as well! The note at the top of the page is from writer Roy Thomas (who handled the adaptation of L. Frank Baum's masterpiece) to inker Tony DeZuniga. It references a drawing on the reverse side and an offer to "vouche" (i.e. pay for) it. And sure enough, on the reverse is a fully inked image of a barbarian (Conan?) fighting a very snakey dragon. Roy was the editor for Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan, so it it likely he intended to use the piece as a spot illustration in that magazine. The page has pinholes in the top margin and very slight handling wear. In Excellent condition.
