Virgil Finlay Amazing Stories: "Boarding Party" Illustration Original Art (Ziff-Davis Fiction Group, 1963). As Finlay grew older, he backed away from his labor-intensive use of scratchboard technique and leaned more toward pre-textured Coquille board, using grease-crayon strokes to bring out the ingrained dots so crucial to his style. This splendid high-angle pursuit scene represents author Robert Young's variation on the fairytale "Jack and the Beanstalk," showing the downward chase from the Giant's point-of-view. Val Mayerik Howard the Duck Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-13-78 (Marvel Comics & Tribune Syndicate, 1978). Mayerik and author Steve Gerber were on a roll during the mid-to-late 1970s with Howard the Duck -- the unlikeliest heroic comic ever to issue from the Marvel machine, what with its playful cynicism and overtones of Existentialism. The daily-strip spinoff proved no less bizarre, as this striking episode demonstrates. A bevy of beautiful babes in Bev's massage parlor highlight this great, large, single panel daily. Irwin Hasen Dondi Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 11 (Chicago Tribune, 1956-58). A group of 10 early Dondi strips! Created by Gus Edson and Irwin Hasen, Dondi first appeared in papers on September 25th, 1955 as a five year old war orphan from World War II. Edmond Good Homer Towne Daily Comic Strip Pilot Original Art Group of 7 (c. 1940s). Good had created the Rex Baxter feature for Bell Publishing, drawn the Tarzan and Scorchy Smith strips, and helped to develop DC Comics' heroic feature, Tomahawk. The artist envisioned bigger things with this promising set of tryouts: Homer Towne (a pun on hometown) is a folksy drifter with a heroic streak. The pitch fizzled, but these examples endure as monuments to a series that might have been. Chester Gould Dick Tracy Sunday Comic Strip Original dated 8-2-53 (The Chicago Tribune, 1953)....
Chester Gould Dick Tracy Sunday Comic Strip Original dated 8-2-53 (The Chicago Tribune, 1953). America's foremost lawman, Dick Tracy made Jack Webb look like a stand-up comedian. From his razor-sharp chin to his two-way wrist radio, Tracy was always working to make America a safer, better place. Originally a hard-bitten cops-and-robbers strip, the feature grew more and more bizarre as Gould's imagination and his fondness for outre characters was given more latitude. The strip offered here, centers around Tracy getting info on Uncle Canhead. It even has an entry in the Crimestoppers Textbook at the top of the page. With an image area measuring approximately 27" x 18", the piece is constructed, as were the majority of Gould's Sundays, by adhering individual panels to a larger board. In Very Good condition, with foxing on the right side, a few adhesive stains and discoloring to the title stat.

Harry Lucey and Mario Acquaviva Archie #164: "What Price Archie?" Complete 6-Page Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 1966). Lucey and Acquaviva recapture an air of Bob Montana's original Archie style of the 1940s, presenting Archie Andrews as a credulous, wide-eyed innocent in the thrall of a manipulative Veronica Lodge. The story starts with a false arrest for Archie, escalates to a mysterious ordeal where Veronica seems to be reading his mind, and closes on a note of indignant frustration for Betty Cooper. Classic, definitive business from a masterful team of artists. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 17". Light toning. Excellent condition.

The conceptual piece heralds a contest built around a "Magic 8 Ball". The artwork measures 8" x 12" on lightweight vellum, signed by Macaluso. Ink and felt marker, with painted white retouching. Fred Thomas Long Shots Daily Comic Strip Original Art Boxing-Themed Group of 20 (Hall Syndicate Inc., c. late 1960s). Produced in ink and white-out over graphite on Bristol board with image areas of approximately 18" x 5", the logo for each strip is a printed paste-up, and they have begun to discolor, with a few becoming detached. Bob Brown and Rudy Nebres The Rampaging Hulk #2 Story Page 60 Bloodstone Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1977). The Rampaging Hulk ranged beyond its title character in a back-up story to include the likes of Ulysses Bloodstone, an ageless slayer of monsters, who appears poised here to bring Tony "Iron Man" Stark into a new adventure. This one is the closing page of a story called "Scream, the Shrike," and as such it is emblematic of Marvel's historic commitment to involve all its signature characters in novelistic story-arcs more complicated than the individual tales. Signed by Nebres. Jim Novak's first-rate lettering appears on a vellum overlayer. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15.5". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Frank Macaluso Cap'n Crunch's Christmas Crunch Box Back Cover Illustration Original Art and Printed Box (Quaker, 1993). It's a little known fact that Cap'n Crunch was the brainchild of Jay Ward Studios. With actual production art from Jay Ward cartoons nearly impossible to find, collectors have begun exploring new opportunities to own something with a Jay Ward Studio connection. In this lot is a hand-inked, preliminary Christmas Crunch cereal box logo by noted Cap'n Crunch Illustrator Frank Macaluso. It is signed and on an 8" x 11" piece tracing paper and measures approximately 3" x 7". Included with it is signed, hand-inked art of the captain from a different package. The two combine nicely to form one original package front setup. Along with the package front art is a signed, uncirculated Christmas Crunch cereal box. In addition to the package art is a bonus... the original art illustration by Mr. Macaluso from a Blockbuster Video promotional poster titled "Memory Game". The detail in this drawing is incredible and even features a turtle wearing the Captain's hat a subtle nod to his Cap'n Crunch work. This piece has been folded, with minor wrinkles. It is in Very Good condition. The others are all in Excellent condition.

Dave Taylor Batman: Death by Design Story Page 28 Original Art (DC Comics, 2013). An experimental pocket-epic in the chronicles of Batman, Death by Design starts with Taylor's deeply textured pencilling -- captured here in its original organic form -- which was finished out for the published version with digital panel-framing and the addition of delicate shadings of color and highlighting. (The sound-effect lettering in the third panel became solid-white as published, for example.) A splendidly arrayed composition, as rich in chiaroscuro as some classic Hollywood film noir. Graphite on DC-brand Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 14". Excellent condition.

Frank Macaluso Cap'n Crunch "Things You Want To Know About" Back Cover Illustration Original Art and Printed Box (... (Total: 3 Items)
Frank Macaluso Cap'n Crunch "Things You Want To Know About" Back Cover Illustration Original Art and Printed Box (Quaker, 1994). Original art from Jay Ward Studio's animated series was routinely destroyed, so production art is very hard to find. Fortunately some Jay Ward Characters, such as Cap'n Crunch, still appear regularly on Quaker Oats Cereal boxes. It is a little known fact that the Cap' is as much a Jay War character as Bullwinkle or George of the Jungle. This is an original pen and ink preliminary drawing by noted Cap'n Crunch Illustrator Frank Macaluso. The gag is titled "Things You Want to Know About" and is an assortment of entertaining questions to engage the breakfasting Cap'n Cruncher. The main figures were photocopied to onionskin paper, and then additional hand-inks were added, including all of the text and background. Another of the base photocopies used is included so you can compare. Both measure 11.5" x 7.5" on 14" x 11" onionskin paper. The completed piece has been mounted to a sheet of 18 x 12" sheet of onionskin paper. Included with the preliminary art is an unused cereal box with the final gag printed on the back cover. All are in Excellent condition.

He moved his unique style to a rival title, Cracked, and remained otherwise busy, including a splendid three-issue run of Don Martin Magazine. Don Martin Man and Mule Original Art (c. 1990s). Martin's grotesque caricatures and absurd humor earned him such a devoted following at MAD Magazine that he became known as "MAD's Maddest Artist." This unique stand-alone gag breaks ranks with Martin's habit of building a scenario in several panels, confining the gag to one image -- a desert tramp, swapping clothing with his mule. Delicately layered coloring lends depth and an incongruous scenic beauty to the bizarre situation. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Ink and watercolors over graphite on Bristol board. Gaar Williams How To Keep from Growing Old Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art (Chicago Tribune, 1929). Anybody who has ever had a bad day can relate to this delightful large-scale piece, which captures Williams' signature Everyman character in a violent backlash after a near-disaster. Hilarious and angry, all at once. So attuned is Williams' vision to the awkward realities of everyday life, that his cartoons remained in print almost a generation after his death: This piece, formally dated at 1929, features rubber-stamp documentation (on reverse) showing additional engraving orders from 1944 and 1947. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 13". Moderate age-toning, with barked edges and marginal scuffing. Very Good condition.

Gil Kane Starhawks Daily Comic Strip dated 2-10-79 (United Features Syndicate, 1979). Writer Ron Goulart and artist Kane arranged for Starhawks' daily episodes to run in a double-tier layout, commanding more space as a result and looking very much like Sunday episodes, what with the deep-rectangle dimensions. This episode, a lull in the action, is a masterpiece of facial-study characterization -- rich in body language and facial close-ups and containing a clever punchline. Kane hits his stride here with a felt-marker technique he had developed during the closing decades of his career. Marker (minimal under-pencilling) on Bristol board. Image area, 16" x 10". Exceptionally clean and bright, with two tiny smears at upper right and a few white-paint corrections. Excellent condition.

Lynd Ward Ominous Rooftop Scene Original Art (c. 1930s, Year). Ward, despite his identification with commercial illustration and the Finer Arts, is widely regarded today as an inventor of the graphic-novel idiom, given his innovations in pictorial narrative. Writes the cartoon-artist Art Spiegelman: "Ward's wordless woodcut novels ... were easier for Western culture to embrace than comics..." This fine scratchboard piece (publishing pedigree undocumented) depicts a couple, high upon a rooftop, while below lurks an ominous figure. There is a patent resemblance to the style of Ward's pulp-fiction contemporary, Virgil Finlay. Brushed ink, knife-scratching, and ink-spatter technique over graphite on clay-coated scratchboard stock. Image area, 7" x 10.5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: John & Kate Bender Portrait Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). Price's notorious Bloody Visions portfolio traces the history of serial murder in a case-by-case perspective. The Benders were among the first such documented perpetrators -- operators of a roadhouse in 19th-century Kansas, where guests were robbed and murdered with alarming frequency. The portraits (significantly larger than published size) are well represented in this intense piece, rendered on a heavily textured page. Price's background as a police suspect-sketch artist and courtroom portraitist serves well in this context. Crayon on heavy-duty off-white watercolor stock. Image area, 9" x 13.75". Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: Lizzie Borden Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). "Some folks say, 'She didn't do it!' -- others say, 'Of course she did!' but they all agree Miss Lizzie B. was a problem kind of kid." So sang the Chad Mitchell Trio in "The Ballad of Lizzie Borden," a hit record of 1962. Composer Michael Brown drew inspiration from a double-axe murder case of 1892, for which Borden was tried and acquitted. Price's folio-piece portrait of the accused perpetrator captures a childlike air, with a hint of derangement in the eyes. Ink and crayon over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 13.5". George "Lichty" Lichtenstein Grin and Bear It Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (Publishers-Hall Syndicate, 1967). These gems from a fine, often-imitated cartoonist typify the jovial sarcasm that had made Lichty a popular favorite since the 1920s. The masterstroke is a painstakingly composed compositional style that has the outward appearance of a loose-jointed, almost sketchy approach. The pieces fall very close together in time: 12-21-67, 12-22-67, 12-23-67, and 12-27-67. Ink over graphite with black crayon on Coquille board, with painted white retouching. Image area, 8" x 10.5".
