Alfred Ashley The Manx Man Original Art (c. 1841-53)....
Alfred Ashley The Manx Man Original Art (c. 1841-53). Droll hilarity radiates from this fine miniature from the British Isles, depicting a fellow from the Isle of Man -- a Manx Man. Did you never see a Manx Man before?" This piece represents a folio of original cartoons. This story also featured Linda Turner's cat Toby, but one of the best parts is that racy silhouette image in Panel 1 of Page 6. Great pages created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 19". Lightly toned, with some whiteout art corrections. It seems this story was slated for a reprint in issue #65, however the title was canceled before then. In Excellent condition.

Neal Adams Studios and John Buscema (attributed) Star Trek: The Time Stealer [Book and Record Set] #BR513 Story Page 8 Original Art (Power Records, 1976). Neal Adams and his studio has John Buscema guest-artist specifically for the figures of Conan... er...we mean "Konrac" the Barbarian and Klee the Wizard. It's also of interest to point out that Buscema drew the Conan-knockoff with a full beard and the whiteout art corrections on his lower jaw and chest are the result of the Neal Adams Studio, who re-inked the faux Conan without the beard. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 13". It is mis-labeled in the top margin as being from the "Mirror for Futility" story. The page is unevenly toned and the last panel is a stripped-in art correction taped from behind. In Good condition.

Peter Pan Records Artist Jetsons Illustration Original Art Group of 2 (Peter Pan Records/Hanna-Barbera, c. 1986). Two images created for Jetsons related "Book and Record" sets. One features mermaid versions of Jane and daughter Judy, and is from the "Book and Cassette" story "Frogman and the Mermaids". (This story seems to have been re-drawn and release in joint by Hanna-Barbera and Marvel Books in 1988.) The second piece, from an unknown title, features a giant Astro, with daughter Judy and Jane (in a bikini). Both of these images were created in animation style by painting them on the reverse side of acetate sheets. They are affixed to illustration boards for display. Each one measures 14" x 13". Martin Branner Denny Dimwit Inscribed Illustration Original Art (c. 1940-50s)....
Martin Branner Denny Dimwit Inscribed Illustration Original Art (c. 1950s). Branner's long-running comic strip, Winnie Winkle, gained great crowd-pleasing momentum from a supporting character, Denny Dimwit -- a pointy-headed goof whom Branner had modeled after the freak-show pinheads he had encountered in his pre-1920s travels as a Vaudeville entertainer. Denny dominates this special-purpose drawing, created for the offspring of one family. The dialogue balloon modifies Denny's trademark saying, "Youse is a good boy," to include all five siblings. Ink and watercolors with drybrush effects over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 6" x 7.75". Faint toning. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Doug Marlette Suicide Machine Editorial Comic Strip Original Art (New York Newsday, 1990). Marlette takes a grimly humorous tack in depicting President George H.W. Bush as Jack "Dr. Death" Kevorkian -- a scathing appraisal of Bush's "No new taxes" mantra. At once chilling and amusing, and rendered in an unusually large scale that intensifies the imagery. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17.5" x 11.25". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Alban B. Butler Jr. Hoedown Original Art (D'Arcy Press, c. 1920s). The artist, also known as Bud Butler, excelled at the portrayal of Southern community life -- in this case, a festive dance, complete with a musical ensemble playing "Turkey in the Straw" (upper left). Each character exhibits a distinct personality, from the revelry inside to a fistfight outside. The detailed, spontaneous pen-strokes are a delight to behold. Ink over graphite on layered Bristol board. Image area, 16.75" x 9". Pronounced age-toning, marginal smudging, slightly ragged upper edge, and barked corners. Very Good condition. Russell Patterson Black-Tie Event Original Art (c. 1930s). Patterson's Art Deco illustrations helped to develop the image of the flapper as an avatar of fashion and design during the Jazz Age and early Depression years. This splendid large-scale piece, arrayed like a comic strip, tells a story while leaving the details to the viewer's imagination. Strategic use of black-ink spotting creates a gravitational pull that draws the gaze inexorably from left to right. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 22.5" x 6.25", inscribed and matted to 27" x 14". Moderate age-toning. Barked corners on matte. Very Good condition.

Will Meugniot "Smalltime Heroes" Cardboard Reward and Chim-Chim (of Speed Racer) Illustration Original Art Group of 2 (c. 2000s). Most artists are great to their fans, but few go as many steps beyond as Will Meugniot. Many years ago, he began drawing a free sketch/doodle on the cardboard inset he would use to package commission artwork. He called these "Cardboard Rewards", and they were just whatever he felt like drawing. Here we have an unlikely, but funny Atomic-team-up of The Atom (Al Prat), Atomic Mouse, Atom Ant, and the Atom (Ray Palmer). This is a team you can't split up! Ink over blue pencil on 12" x 17.5" cardboard. Also included is a rather manic looking monkey... it's Chim-Chim from Speed Racer! The unsigned piece may well be by Meugniot also. Ink on 11" x 8.5" paper. Both are in Excellent condition.

Charles Phil Bissell and Others - Editorial Comic-Strip Panels Original Art Group of 8 (c 1940s-1970s). Nashville-based Bissell rings in the New Year of 1979 with the dominant piece in this varied selection of (mostly) editorial commentaries. Elsewhere, Ontario cartooning legend Merle Tingley comments sarcastically on special-occasion weeks. Vancouver's Len Norris razzes the Customs Department. Pulitzer medalist Paul Szep takes a breather from politics to deliver a funny scene in an aquarium (signed). The New York Post's Sean Delonas makes a droll observation about voter-registration fraud. And off the political-cartoon beat, NEA Syndicate's Gill Fox delivers two domestic gags from his daily strip, Side Glances (one is inscribed); and Bruce Bolinger offers a surreal piece about a frog and a psychiatrist (signed). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas range from 9" x 5" to 15" x 10.5". Varied age-toning. Very Good to Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: Queen Christina of Sweden Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). The notorious ruler and specialist in palace intrigues and political assassination (1626-1689) cops a menacing smirk in this intense close-up, in broad-stroke ink-stipple and crosshatching. Price's controversial series of true-crime trading cards peaked with the all-women set, Vol. 3. The caption, "What -- Me Wuornos?" is a punning dual reference to a much later serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, and to a slogan associated with MAD Magazine's Alfred E. Neuman ("What -- me worry?"). The art is significantly larger than its miniature published version. Ink over blue graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Excellent condition.

Roy G. Krenkel Nudes Group of 4 Sketches Original Art (c. 1950s-60s).... (Total: 4 Original Art)
Roy G. Krenkel Nudes Group of 4 Sketches Original Art (c. 1950s-60s). A far cry from Krenkel's better-known interpretations of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan, etc.), these spontaneous and voluptuous studies demonstrate the artist's comfort with a variety of media. Two pieces are in conventional pen-and-ink, one with steel crow-quill pen and the other with glass-point stylus; a third, in ballpoint ink with felt-marker shading for emphasis; and a fourth, in red-wax pencil with graphite overtones. Perceptible echoes, here, of Krenkel's mentor, J. Allen St. John, and a foreshadowing of Frank Frazetta. One page (reverse) contains a false-start drawing. Mixed media on bondpaper (three pieces) and porous manila stock (one). Image areas, 8.5" x 11" (three) and 8" x 7" (one). Manila page shows marginal tearing and wrinkling. Very Good to Excellent condition.

Edwin Marcus, John Riedell and Others - Political Cartoons Group of 8 (c. 1930s-2000s).... (Total: 8 Original Art)
Edwin Marcus, John Riedell and Others - Various Political Cartoons (c. 1930s-2000s). The centerpiece of this varied selection is Marcus' New York Times cartoon (1960s) bemoaning the sluggishness of the US Senate in taking action on civil rights legislation (autographed and inscribed). Iowa-based editorialist John Riedell razzes the Democratic Party for self-defeating actions (1970s). In a flashback to 1929, Buffalo, NY, cartoonist William H. Summers delivers an admiring portrait of Dr. William E. Wickenden, newly installed as president of Case School of Applied Science. A Depression-era commentary (signature undecipherable) finds Agriculture Secretary Henry A. Wallace surveying the drought-plagued Western States. Two unsigned pencil sketches depict Uncle Sam in a quandary over Middle Eastern tensions and Soviet missile development. In the new century, Geoffrey Moss of Creators Syndicate ponders the sorry state of the economy, and Chuck Asay of Creators Syndicate (inscribed) likens Iraqi politics to a soccer game. Various media and various art-stock. Image areas range from 8" x 10" to 11" x 16". Individual conditions range from Good to Excellent. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Franklin Collier The Day After and Other Editorial Comic Strips Original Art Group of 5 (the Boston Herald, 1920s). Collier, a master of ridicule, delivers a day-after-Christmas cartoon with his usual sarcasm. Then, he tears into the 1924 race for governor of Massachusetts, razzing likely candidates Jim Jackson and Alvan Fuller. (Fuller won.) A Harvard class excursion and a convention of dentists inspire some spirited ridicule. The capper is a multi-caricature satire of a political-party convention, pointing out individual absurdities and foibles. (This piece also offers a look into Collier's creative process, containing several art corrections integrated with the basic drawing.) A recurring image, a little kid in a big hat, is Collier's signature character, Otto Grow. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas range from 15" x 11" to 17" x 11.5. Moderate age-toning and marginal scuffing/staining. One piece is extremely tightly trimmed at right. Very Good condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Bruce Stark Muhammad Ali vs. Jerry Quarry Sports Comic Strip Original Art (New York Daily News, 1972). Though undated in writing, this rousing portrait of Ali can be traced to the prizefighter's second bout with Jerry "Irish" Quarry on June 27, 1972. (Ali won on a TKO. Quarry is pictured only as a soaring fist.) A secondary panel portrays Bob Foster, triumphant over Mike Quarry, on the same date. Splendid use of dramatically lighted crosshatching by one of the NY Daily News' more dependable sporting cartoonists. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 8.5". Faint toning. Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 1: Charles Manson Card-Folio Portrait Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1991). The Great Serial Killer Trading-Card Scare of the 1990s originated with Price's three-volume set of true-crime folios, reproduced in miniature collector-card format. The much larger original portraits are well represented in this intense stipple study of the University of Texas tower sniper, Charles Whitman, one of the most reprehensible subjects. Price's background as a police suspect-sketch artist and courtroom portraitist serves well in this context. Ink, felt marker, and crayon with painted white highlights over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Excellent condition.

Uncle Sam recoils from international flattery in this magnificent combination of cartooning and caricature with fine-art watercolor technique. Master political cartoonist Cesare most often worked in grease crayon, but in the occasional fully painted piece he would lavish intense detail in boldly saturated brush-strokes.
