Gene Hazelton The Flintstones Daily Comic Strip 12-3-62 (McNaught Syndicate, 1962)....
Gene Hazelton The Flintstones Daily Comic Strip 12-3-62 (McNaught Syndicate, 1962). It must have been an unseasonably warm December day in Bedrock for this "washed-out" hockey game! Fred and Barney are featured in this original daily; it's dated only as "Mon 12/3," but stylistically this is unmistakably an early strip, and the date fits the 1962 calendar. Art is in ink over graphite on Craftint DuoTone board, with an image size of 20.75" x 6.5". Very Good condition.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: Gertrude Banizewsky Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). Price's controversial series of true-crime trading cards peaked with an all-women set, including this intense portrait of Indiana's notorious "Torture Mother." Banizewski was convicted in 1965 as the party in charge of a plot to kidnap, torment, and eventually murder a teenage girl -- considered the single worst crime perpetrated against an individual in Indiana's history. Utilizing an intricate crosshatching technique learned from Underground Comix pioneer Frank Stack (a.k.a. Foolbert Sturgeon), this portrait is significantly larger than the miniature published version. Ink, white watercolor, and collage effects on two-ply blue-line layout stock. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Michael H. Price and Steve Mannion Southern-Fried Homicide: "The Drifting Dead" Partial Story Original Art Group of 2 (Cremo Studios, 1998). The spirit of EC Comics' classic horror titles persists in Price's creepy tale of a mission to retrieve corpses from a sunken ship. Mannion's finished art channels the compatible influences of Wally Wood and Will Eisner while forging a distinctive style in itself. Mannion (finished art over Price's pre-lettered layouts) had recently débuted in Kitchen Sink Press' similarly conceived comics title, Death Rattle. The present story reappears in the anthology Deep in the Horrors of Texas (2017). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-4-63 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1963)....
Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-4-63 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1963). Parker brilliantly combines Good Girl Art with a Feminist attitude -- defiant and sexy in about equal measures. Mopsy is thoroughly in control of the men in her orbit. Parker also retained a youthful and ornery attitude -- she delivered this bright gag while in her 50s -- that anticipated the larger Feminist Movement of a few years later. Beautifully drawn, with an intense contrast between the slender pen-line work and the densely blackened areas. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 5.75" x 7.25". Roy G. Krenkel Study for Renaissance Original Art (c. 1950s). A far cry from Krenkel's better-known interpretations of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan, etc.), this voluptuous miniature pronounces itself a conceptual, or preliminary, piece but stands as a finely detailed work on its own. The ultra-zaftig contours might appear impossible if not for Krenkel's persuasive command of exaggerated anatomy. Perceptible echoes, here, of Krenkel's mentor, J. Allen St. John, and a foreshadowing of Frank Frazetta. Ink and graphite on watercolor stock. Image area, 5" x 7". Excellent condition.

For a backup feature that had originated as a takeoff on Jimmy Hatlo's Little Iodine, Edwards' Li'l Jinx proved surprisingly original over the long haul, with a wealth of wordplay and absurd situations. One of these selections is a self-contained one-pager, involving a boastful neighbor-kid. The other is the opening half of a two-pager, involving Jinx' sudden interest in gardening -- or "landscraping," as she calls it. Edwards' brisk and spontaneous brush-art is delightful. Neal Adams Studios and John Buscema (attributed) Star Trek: The Time Stealer [Book and Record Set] #BR513 Story Page 7 Original Art (Power Records, 1976). Two great tastes in one comic book! Neal Adams and his studio has John Buscema guest-artist specifically the figures of Conan... er...we mean "Konrac" the Barbarian and Klee the Wizard. So this page has a wonderful juxtaposition of styles, most notable in Panel 8. Also of interest, it seems Buscema drew the Conan-knockoff with a full beard. You can see every instance of him has whiteout art correction on his lower jaw and chest, with new art in the Neal Adams studio style. Panels 4 and 9 are stripped-in art corrections that are taped-in from the reverse side. The page was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 13". Tony Sgroi and Gene Wolfe Tip Top Tales #2464: "Bugs Bunny's Chimney Adventure" Endpapers Original Art (Warner Bros./Whitman Publishing, 1963). Just as Mel Blanc captured ideally the smart-aleck vocal mannerisms of Bugs Bunny, so Sgroi and Wolfe nail the character's visual aspect. (Interesting to note that Sgroi worked primarily for a rival 'toon studio, Hanna-Barbera.) Two distinct illustrations add up to one dynamic spread. Whitman's answer to Simon & Schuster's Little Golden Books line was the Tip Top Tales series -- slender hardcovers for the juvenile trade, generously illustrated. The style here recalls Robert McKimson's famous crayon-and-watercolor pieces for Capitol Records' Bugs Bunny storybook-phonorecord albums of the 1940s-50s. Accompanied by a well-read copy of the book. Gouache on illustration board. Image area, 18.5" x 11". Paintings affixed to a slightly larger art-board. Russ Manning Star Wars Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-6-79 (L.A. Times Syndicate, 1979). A few years before his death, Russ Manning was commissioned by George Lucas to write and draw the Star Wars comic strip. His talents were stretched to the limit during much of this period, as he also was still doing the Tarzan Sunday pages (until Gil Kane was signed on to take over). Manning continued drawing the Star Wars strip until his health forced him to turn the project over to Al Williamson. C-3PO, Luke Skywalker, and Anduvil are overheard by Sandpeople and there's even a Bantha in the last panel! The ink over graphite on Bristol board image area measures 14" x 4.5," and the art is in Excellent condition. From the Manning Family Collection.

Sam Berman and Others Political Caricatures Original Art Group of 6 (c. 1950s-90s).... (Total: 6 Original Art)
Sam Berman and Others Political Caricatures Original Art Group of 6 (c. 1950s-90s). Master caricaturist Berman, better known for his show-biz faces, renders New York Governor-turned-Senator Herbert J. Lehman in exaggerated terms. This brilliant entry (slightly eroded in the paint texture) toplines a generous selection of such cartoon-portraits, including UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson, by Cuban editorialist Coronado Massaguer; Soviet big-shots Nikita Khrushchev and Nikolai Bulganin, by Cuba's David Virgilio Piñera; Adlai Stevenson, by a caricaturist signed only as "David"; and a glamorized Robert E. Lee, by World War II-era combat artist Howard Brodie. The capper is an unflattering image-in-miniature of H. Ross Perot (1990), by the San Antonio Express-News' John Branch. Various media including pen/brush-and-ink, watercolor, and tempera, on varied page-stock. Image areas range from 3.5" x 7" to 10.5" x 13". Individual conditions range from Very Good to Excellent. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Oscar Cesare The Saturday Evening Post: "Something Is Going To Happen" Original Art (Curtis Publ., 1910s)....
Oscar Cesare The Saturday Evening Post: "Something Is Going To Happen" Original Art (Curtis Publ., 1910s). An indignant USA (personified by Uncle Sam) braces to send Gen. John J. Pershing into Mexico to pursue the revolutionary warrior Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Inspired by a Villa border raid known as the Battle of Columbus (1916), this tense, understated commentary heralds the US's Pancho Villa Expedition, which ended upon the outbreak of a larger concern -- World War I. A publishing pedigree is not formally documented, but the layout and the marginal notations are consistent with those of Cesare's many contributions to The SatEvePost during this period. Ink over graphite on heavy Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 17". Pronounced age-toning overall and extensive stain-spotting at right. Very Good condition. Matt Clark Western Scenes Preliminary Original Art Group of 4 (c. 1930s-40s). A key difference between Clark's conceptual miniatures and his finished paintings lies in their respective sizes: These small-scale pieces, spontaneity and haste aside, possess the same mastery of composition and dynamic tension that one finds in Clark's celebrated, fully finished scenes of the American frontier. This array includes a hard-charging cowgirl, a sedate horse-drawn wagon scene, a fight, and a placid canoeing scene. Ink, ink-wash, and watercolor over graphite on textured manila stock. Image area, 5.5" x 3" to 8.5" x 5". Moderate age-toning. Very Good condition.
