Clifford McBride Napoleon Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Lafave Syndicate, c. 1930s-40s). One of the most delightful funny-dog cartoons ever created: Napoleon is startled by a strange voice that appears to be coming from an impatient puppy -- it's only Uncle Elby, playing ventriloquist. The expression on Napoleon's face (panel 2) is priceless. Bonus: The reverse contains McBride's handwritten notes for another voice-throwing episode, along with two rough-sketch panels. The strip proper (undated) features the artist's delicate hand-coloring. Ink, watercolors, and wax pencils over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 5". Henry Sharp and Joe Giella Strange Adventures #55 Story Page 3 Original Art (DC Comics, 1955)....
Henry Sharp and Joe Giella Strange Adventures #55 Story Page 3 Original Art (DC Comics, 1955). A pivotal title in the emergence of the Silver Age of Comics -- begun in 1950 as a pre-Comics Code SF title, Strange Adventures adapted gracefully to the Code's censorship restrictions and established an imaginative attitude that would encourage the superhero revival of the midcentury. This delightful sequence depicts a series of apparent storms that prove to be the work of an alien movie studio -- using Earth as the setting of a disaster picture. Sharp would've made a dandy artist for the new-Flash breakthrough. Giella, of course, became pivotal to the fresh wave of costumed heroism that resulted. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19". Moderate toning. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

DC Comics Artist Buzzy #64 Story Page 2 Original Art (DC Comics, 1955). The sustained success of Archie and its spinoffs inspired such rival teenage-humor titles as Buzzy, represented here by a business-as-usual disagreement between the title character and his girlfriend. She insists that he must make a wish upon a star. "But I don't want anything!" he counters, to no avail. Clean and airy composition, with an abundance of white space and strategically spotted black patches. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Jimmy Wakely, one of the last of Hollywood's singing cowboys, parlayed his movies-and-records stardom into a long-running comic-book series, drawn by some of DC's best of the best. Toth's rendering captures the vigor and determination of the movieland Wakely. This large-scale sequence comes from a story called "Return of the Golden Herd," about a mystifying legend and a scam to bamboozle the citizens of a frontier settlement. Brilliant. Price triggered a notorious sensation with the Bloody Visions series of true-crime collector cards, inspiring several imitations and stating a First Amendment case of some prominence. The original art (much larger than published size) is well represented in this intense self-portrait for the "About the Author" page. Fred Ray Star-Spangled Comics #105 Tomahawk Story Page 9 Original Art (DC Comics, 1950). Tomahawk, DC's wild-frontier takeoff on Batman, had assumed the cover-featured position in Star-Spangled Comics by now -- and for good reason: The action-packed serial delivered the adventurous goods at every turn. This urgent sequence finds the hero rescuing his sidekick, Dan Hunter, from the dual menaces of an enemy trap and a stampede of bison. Ray's economical brushwork and mastery of dimension and deep perspective make him one of DC's definitive heroic artists. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18". Pronounced age-toning; marginal smudging and staining, some reaching into the art itself. One small tear at lower right. Very Good condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Michael H. Price Bloody Visions Vol. 3: Ladykillers: Elizabeth Duncan Original Art (Shel-Tone Publ. & Cremo Studios, 1994). Price's controversial series of true-crime trading cards peaked with an all-women set, including this intense, high-contrast stipple portrait of California's notorious Elizabeth "Ma" Duncan, an over-possessive sort who engineered the murder of her daughter-in-law in 1958. A historically significant case, in that Duncan was the last woman to be executed in California before the Supreme Court's 1972 suspension of the death penalty. This portrait is significantly larger than the miniature published version. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 13.5". Slight stain-spotting in left margin. Excellent condition.

Strange, that a feature called Tiny Tim should have become famous primarily for its tales of horror. Here is a prime specimen from Link's classic series about a boy with the fantastic ability to shrink himself -- a mad-scientist yarn, involving a plot to steal Tim's life-force. Frank Bolle Red Mask #43 Story Page 5 Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1954). The post-WWII decline among superheroes was hardly a matter of such characters vanishing. They merely retreated into the Western comics and other adventurous titles until a larger resurgence could take place. This choice example of costumed heroism pits the frontier swashbucklers Red Mask (alias Redmask) and Black Phantom against "the fastest gunhand in the Southwest." Bolle was a master at conveying hard-charging action with economical, spontaneous brush-strokes and bold, heavy-black ink gravity -- anticipating the Sin City style of Frank Miller. Milton Caniff Steve Canyon Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-9-50 (Field Enterprises, 1951)....
Milton Caniff Steve Canyon Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-9-50 (Field Enterprises, 1951). Only such a master as Caniff could get away with giving a character a name like Herself Muldoon -- and then making the character as sadistic an antihero as ever graced a comic strip. This brilliantly composed specimen finds champ aviator Steve Canyon at the mercy of Muldoon, who shackles him to a wall and then threatens him with a lighted cigarette under the schnozzola. Beautifully drawn, and blatantly defiant of the comics syndicates' standing rule against kinky business. Caniff added a personalized inscription to comics historian Art Wood (lower right) in 1955. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21.75" x 6.5". Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Frank Willard and Ferd Johnson Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate Co., 1945). Lowbrow humor deluxe from from creator Willard and his longtime assistant, Johnson. Dated 8-8, 8-10, 8-11, 8-28, and 10-16 (all from 1945), these gems concentrate on the period where supporting character Mamie Mullins develops a career as a heavyweight wrestler. Unusual, that a feature depicting such uniformly disreputable people should have proved so sympathetic and so popular over the long haul -- brilliant stuff. Horizontal lines within the image area indicate crop marks for newspapers that preferred to run the feature at a shallower depth. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with general age-toning, handling wear, and marginal notes. The image areas measure approximately 20" x 6". Conditions average out to Very Good.

George Evans Barnstormer Original Art (1993)....
George Evans Barnstormer Original Art (1993). Evans, one of the comics' great aviation artists, depicts a birdwing monoplane as it attempts to clear an airstrip fence. The cryptic signage (left) lends an air of mystery. Evans had graced many a story of warfare and horror at EC Comics during the 1950s; developed a new following at the Warren Publ. horror comics of the 1960s; and served as a steady (unbilled) backup artist on the newspaper strip Terry and the Pirates. His technique here is looser and more spontaneous than most of his published work, with a typically sturdy compositional construction. Personalized inscription at lower right. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 9". Marginal stain-spotting at right. Excellent condition.

Ne'er-do-well Uncle Willie Mullins and his ill-tempered wife, Mamie, dominate this bright selection from creator Willard and stalwart assistant Johnson. Moon Mullins is a remarkable example of Willard's ability to depict a uniformly good-for-nothing cast of characters in a sympathetic and hilarious light. The selections are dated 7-11-49, 4-11 and 4-13 in 1950, 5-12-52, and 3-26-53. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19.75" x 6.25". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Jose Luis Salinas The Cisco Kid Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-21-51 (King Features Syndicate, 1951). Salinas' frontier artistry is as suspenseful and compelling as anything in the fine-art realm of Frederic Remington or Charles M. Russell. This tense sequence from The Cisco Kid -- a Robin Hood of the Old West -- finds Cisco getting the drop on a renegade gun-runner while Cisco's sidekick, Pancho, finds himself in peril elsewhere. The cinematic angles and shadowplay are amazing. And the white-paint detailing on Cisco's shirt looks like real embroidery. Frank Willard Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate Co., 1945).... (Total: 5 Original Art)
Frank Willard Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate Co., 1945). Willard's masterstroke was to populate Moon Mullins with a uniformly disreputable cast of characters -- and then to make them all sympathetic and sometimes even admirable. In these excellent specimens, housekeeper Mamie Mullins tackles a second career as a wrestler, while her low-life husband, Uncle Willie Mullins, takes undue advantage of her chronic absences. Kayo Mullins, the strip's resident juvenile delinquent, lends caustic commentary. Dates, all in 1945, are 10-26, 10-30, 11-8, and 11-15; the fifth (smaller) strip contains no date. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 19.75" x 6.25" (four pieces) and 14.75" x 5" (one piece, very tightly trimmed at bottom). Moderate toning. Very Good condition.

Edwina Dumm Cap Stubbs and Tippie Daily Comic Strip Original Art Dated 6-5-59 (George Matthew Adams Service, 1959). Tippie, one of the great cartoon dogs, rounds up a fourth for bridge in this delightful example of poignant whimsy and near-wordless narrative thrust, from a pioneering woman in the funnypapers business. Easy to see how Dumm proved such a tremendous influence on National Lampoon's Shary Flenniken, whose Trots and Bonnie is a sustained homage to Cap Stubbs and Tippie. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 16" x 5". Slight toning. Syndicate boilerplate (upper left) has fallen away. Frank Willard and Ferd Johnson Moon Mullins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (News Syndicate Co., 1947). Moon Mullins is as much a smart-aleck wordplay feature as it is an exercise in visual slapstick. But one of these 1947 gems (4-16) deals in wordless eloquence as Willard and backup artist Johnson revel in the romantic delights of the springtime -- in all but the closing panels. Elsewhere in this fine batch, shabby playboy Moon Mullins encounters an overzealous cop (6-14); a fortune-hunter visits Lady Plushbottom (7-3); a detective pegs Lady Plushbottom as a suspect; and kid brother Kayo Mullins runs a lucrative shoe-shine business. George Wunder and George Evans Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art Consecutive Group of 5 (New York News, 1971) Wunder is a wonder, indeed -- an unusually bold and extravagant style, an unerring sense of narrative focus, and an ability to carry forth Terry and the Pirates over a remarkably long stretch from 1946 into 1973. His unbilled assistant on this sequence is longtime backup artist George Evans, late of the EC Comics studio. The extended scenario (12-27 through 12-31, 1971) finds the Dragon Lady, the feature's key antihero, infiltrating a greedy scam to steal ancient archæological treasures. Neal Adams Studios and John Buscema (attributed) Star Trek: The Time Stealer [Book and Record Set] #BR513 Story Page 6 Original Art (Power Records, 1976). If Konrac the Barbarian and Klee the Sorcerer look like they were drawn by John Buscema, that's because they most likely were! It seems Konrac's lower jaw was altered in every appearance with whiteout art corrections (to remove a beard?), probably by Neal Adams or one of his studio associates. Reportedly Dick Giordano helped on inks for this story as well. Buscema's contrasting style can clearly be seen in the last panel of the page. Clifford McBride Napoleon & Uncle Elby Original Art (c. 1930s)....
Clifford McBride Napoleon & Uncle Elby Original Art (c. 1930s). Comics historian R.C. Harvey writes of McBride: "...great verve and an exuberant pen ... vitally energetic." McBride's strip concerns "a stout bachelor and his giant pet," Uncle Elby and Napoleon, achieving what the critic Dennis Wepman called "a beautifully balanced team-the fat man, all stasis and order, and the lean dog, all motion and chaos." This brilliant stand-alone spinoff panel captures that balance ideally. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 8" x 10". Light toning and marginal push-pin punctures. Excellent condition. Cliff Sterrett Polly and Her Pals Specialty Piece Original Art (1941)....
Cliff Sterrett Polly and Her Pals Specialty Piece Original Art (1941). "Eye jazz" is cartoonist Art Spiegelman's term for Sterrett's work: "Your eyes can dance to it." Sterrett composed many years' worth of eye-jazz symphonies in the daily comic strip Polly and Her Pals, but here he takes a more sedate approach to picture principal characters Paw and Maw Perkins and their jazz-baby daughter, Polly Perkins. Not to mention Kitty, Paw's constant companion. All the hallmarks of Sterrett unique style are encapsulated here, down to the finer detail of the proto-Cubist decorative touches. Inscribed to comics historians Art and Bill Wood. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 6.5" x 7.25". Moderate toning. Excellent condition. John Rose (attributed) The Bodacious Cast of Barney Google an' Snuffy Smith Original Art Illustration (c. 2000s). Since inheriting the classic King Features strip in 2001, Rose has taken pains to maintain and advance the legacies of creator Billy DeBeck and longtime author-artist Fred Lasswell. This panoramic spread pictures every principal character, from Snuffy and Loweezy Smith (center) to their backwoods friends and kinfolks. Barney Google (once the star player) appears toward the right. Rose channels well the overriding style of Lasswell, down to the finer detail of numerous protruding tongues, indicating amusement. Gladys Parker Mopsy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-16-64 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1964). Where most practitioners of Good Girl Art dealt in voluptuosity, Parker broke the pattern by making her signature character, Mopsy, a streamlined tease, thoroughly in control of the men in her orbit. Parker also retained a youthful and ornery attitude -- she delivered this bright gag at age 54 -- that anticipated the larger Feminist Movement of a few years later. Beautifully drawn, with an intense contrast between the slender pen-line work and the densely blackened areas. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 5.75" x 7.25". Light toning and marginal scribbles. Excellent condition.
