Robert Webb and Iger Studio Journey into Fear #2 Story Page 3 Original Art (Superior Publ., 1951)....
Robert Webb and Iger Studio Journey into Fear #2 Story Page 3 Original Art (Superior Publ., 1951). Top-notch professionalism distinguishes Webb's work as art director for S.M. "Jerry" Iger's funnybook factory -- a fact often overlooked in light of Superior's cost-cutting printing processes. Seen in original form, unfiltered through off-register color and cheap pulpwood paper, the art is crisp and engrossing: Webb, after all, was the mentor of EC Comics' Al Feldstein. This moody page comes from a psychological horror story about romantic treacheries. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Toby Comics Artist John Wayne Adventure Comics #5 Partial Story Original Art Group of 2 (Toby Press, 1950).... (Total: 2 Original Art)
Toby Comics Artist John Wayne Adventure Comics #5 Partial Story Original Art Group of 2 (Toby Press, 1950). Wayne had become a big-time Hollywood star as early as 1939's Stagecoach, but his comic-book series kept him anchored in the rip-snorting matinée-Western style of his younger days. These pages (5-6) recapture the carnival setting of one of Wayne's earliest films, 1932's The Shadow of the Eagle. Here, he tracks a murder suspect to a midway's House of Mirrors. Some astonishing dialogue: "Yuh salivated my Stetson," Wayne tells one pistol-packing character. Expressive facial studies throughout from the unbilled illustrator. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Frank Xavier Theban Tinsley Air Trails Pictorial Magazine Preliminary Cover Original Art (Street & Smith Publ., 1948). Air Trails Pictorial, a precursor of the influential American Modeler magazines, made fine use of Tinsley over the long term, as both a science-fact and science-fantasy illustrator. The present selection afford a rare chance to catch Tinsley in the act of conceptualizing a painting, laying down a fully painted broad-stroke composition with near-finishing touches. (His hand-lettering is a close replica of the typeset final version.) Accompanied by a tearsheet of the published cover. Acrylics and oil-pastel touches on illustration board. Image area, 9" x 11.5". Ernie Schroeder (attributed) Green Hornet Comics #27 "Spirit of '76" Story Page 6 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1945). Harvey Comics' riposte to Will Eisner's breakthrough feature,The Spirit, was the Spirit of '76 series -- featuring a similarly masked hero, attired in Colonial garb. This wild jungle sequence pits the Spirit (of '76, of course) against a rampaging tiger. Bob Powell is the artist generally associated with the feature, but this unsigned piece shows all the stylistic hallmarks one associates with Schroeder. Jerome Podwil A Wicked Pack of Cards Paperback Novel Cover Painting Original Art (Ace Books, 1969). Although technically not running, we would still include this gorgeous gothic painting in the "women running from houses" genre. The soft and subtle facial study is well juxtaposed against the foreboding night sky and the sinister single light of the house. Created in an unusual manner, it is painted in gouache on 14" x 22" acetate. It has been affixed to an illustration board, however has since come loose. Signed in the lower right. There is some slight soiling on the lower section, however it is still in Excellent condition.

Cy Olson Office Hours Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art Group of 20 (King Features Syndicate, 1967). A cartoonist must be spontaneous and fast-moving to keep up with the demands of a daily gag-panel. Al McWilliams Twin Earths Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 10-6-57 (United Feature Syndicate, 1957). The daily version of this strip started in 1952. When the Sunday strips started up in 1953, an innovative solution to the problem of not every paper carrying both dailies and Sundays was solved. Michael H. Price and Steve Mannion Southern-Fried Homicide: "Staked Plains!" Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Cremo Studios, 1998). The spirit of EC Comics' classic horror titles lives on in Price's story of a decrepit, haunted shack and a lurking monster, 'way out in Texas' desolate Panhandle-Plains region. Mannion's finished art channels the influence of Wally Wood while forging a distinctive style in itself -- Mannion had recently been discovered by Kitchen Sink Press' similarly conceived comics title, Death Rattle. The present story reappears in the anthology Deep in the Horrors of Texas (2017). Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning. Excellent condition.
