Jim Raymond (as Chic Young) Blondie Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-28-67 (King Features Syndicate, 1967). Burp is a word... isn't it? Raymond (kid brother of Flash Gordon's Alex Raymond) had long since assumed the artistic lead, owing to the failed eyesight of creator Chic Young -- whose name remained predominant on the strip. It is Raymond's technique that defines the still-familiar Blondie style. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 17.5" x 5". Light paper toning. In Excellent condition.

Iger Studio Atomic Comics #2 Story Page 7 Original Art (Green Publications., 1946). This tale of Lucky Wings, titled "Lest We Forget", has the slick look at a Fiction House story. Not a surprise as the Iger Shop was creating work for both publishers. In fact, given that you can sell whiteout was used to change her long hair to short, and paste-up text corrections changed her name to "Lucky Wings", it is possible this was published during war-time under a different name. This page was created twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 19.5". The toned page is in Very Good condition.

Gil Kane and Bernard Sachs All Star Western #59 Story Page 2 Original Art (DC Comics, 1951) No sooner had All Star Western taken the place of All Star Comics and the super-heroic Justice Society, than editor Julius Schwartz started dropping hints of an eventual costumed-hero revival. His temporary surrogates for the superheroes were frontier swashbucklers, colorfully attired. In this sequence featuring the crimebusting Don Caballero, we can see Kane building momentum toward his 1960s breakout with the Silver Age Green Lantern series. Brilliant foreshadowing, here. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13.25" x 18.5". Light toning. Some crimping in the All Star page-header photostat. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Robert Blanchard Richard Daley Illustration Original Art (c. 1968)....
Robert Blanchard Richard Daley Illustration Original Art (c. 1968). Skillfully crafted, and subtle in its implications, this piece is thought to be from around the time of the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which saw Abbey Hoffman and others (aka "The Chicago Eight") arrested for protesting, as well as an incident involving the arrest of Jerry Rubin, folk singer Phil Ochs, and a pig named Pigasus. Richard Daley's used of heavy-handed Police tactics were in the media much following this convention. This biting, yet whimsical piece was created in ink with an image area of 5.5" x 9.75". It is matted out to 11" x 15", and then shrinkwrapped. There seems to be a small crease in the upper right side. In Excellent condition.

Dan O'Neill Odd Bodkins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (Chronicle, 1969).... (Total: 5 Original Art)
Dan O'Neill Odd Bodkins Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 5 (Chronicle, 1969). O'Neill, a forerunner/founder of the controversial Air Pirates Underground Comix collective, became one of the youngest syndicated cartoonists (at the tender age of 21) with the launch of Odd Bodkins in 1964 at the San Francisco Chronicle. This mainstream feature veered increasingly toward the counterculture, as shown in these vivid examples (dated 11-10, 11-11, 11-13, 11-14, and 11-17-69). The tactic reflects O'Neill's strategy to persuade the Chronicle to cede the copyright to him -- by making the gags increasingly weird. It took a while, but he finally succeeded in 1972. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, the image areas average 21" x 5.25". Excellent condition.

Joe Kubert Tales of the Green Berets Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1965). Kubert, one of the great page designers of the Golden Age/Silver Age comic books, confronted the challenges of the more restrictive strip format with a defiant ferocity. This splendid example has a genuinely cinematic thrust, with a dynamic opening panel, a low-angle jungle scene, and an intense close-up to tie everything together. The expressive Kubert face is a crowning touch -- as intense as anything the artist ever presented in the Sgt. Rock comic books. Neal Adams and Dick Giordano Batman: Stacked Cards [Book and Record Set] #PR27 Story Page 20 Joker and Robin Original Art (Power Records, 1975). Vintage Neal Adams Batman art, with a dark turn at the end. The last page of the story shows that the Joker is all wet, however, the tale takes a grim turn at the end when Batman muses that a frontal lobotomy could be the best punchline for this joke. Remember... this was a story for children! Created in ink over graphite on paper with an image area of 10" x 15". Slight toning, some minor creases in the lower corners, and some whiteout text corrections. In Excellent condition.

The Serial Killer Trading-Card Controversy of the 1990s originated with Price's three-volume set of true-crime folios, reproduced in miniature collector-card format. The much larger original portraits are well represented in this intense stipple-and-crayon portrait of one of the most reprehensible subjects. Price's background as a police suspect- sketch artist and courtroom portraitist serves well in this context. Ink, crayon, and painted white highlights over graphite on Bristol board. Jack Patton Proration in the Balkans Daily Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Dallas Morning News, 1940). Patton had achieved a comics milestone during the 1920s with Texas History Movies, a unique strip that later was collected into a school textbook. That accomplishment has eclipsed Patton's larger career as a general-purpose editorialist -- exemplified by this striking image of Adolf Hitler as a thug. Especially notable that the cartoon appeared in print well before the U.S.' formal entry into WWII. The pencilled title (upper margin) is in Patton's distinctive handwriting. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10.25" x 14.5". Light toning and marginal stain-spotting. Excellent condition.

Graham Ingels Gunfighter #6 Story Page 5 Original Art (EC Comics, 1948). Before EC's eruption as a force in the horror-comics boom, Bill Gaines' inherited company dealt in many other genres, including Westerns. In Gunfighter, Ingels polished his style in preparation for a breakout to prominence with the Tales from the Crypt line. The story represented here, "The Sandyville Slasher," is something of a horror tale in its own right, what with a serial killer at large. The face at lower right suggests a prototype for Ingels' signature character, the Old Witch. The pure-brush technique is amazing in its range of textures. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Jeff Jones Jungle Jim #21 "Balor, the Barbarian" Unpublished Story Page 2 Original Art (c. 1967). A bit of a mystery, this appears to be an unpublished page created and originally intended to be the back-up tale in a Jungle Jim #21 issue produced in 1967. The page is numbered at the top and bottom as "Jungle Jim #21", however there never was an issue #21 (or even #20) by Dell, and the Charlton issues started with issue #22 in 1969. The back is stamped with an October 1967 Comics Code Authority approval, making it ready for a December 1967 issue. There was a foreign edition Jungle Jim that had an issue #21 around this time. A Jeff Jones Balor-story ("The Guardian Spiders") was published in Charlton Bullseye #1 in 1975, and seems to be set after this tale. This page was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.75" x 15.5". The top margin has multiple staple holes and the page is very lightly toned. Reed Crandall Blazing Combat #3 Page 16 Original Art (Warren Publ., 1966). The objective of Blazing Combat was to recapture the harsh naturalism of Harvey Kurtzman's 1950s war books at EC Comics. EC veteran Crandall fills the bill admirably with this vicious siege by Civil War stragglers from Archie Goodwin's original story, "Foragers." The split-level composition varies the conventional panel-by-panel construction with one stunning panorama, which dominates the page. Ben Oda's exquisite hand-lettering is integral to the design. George Woodbridge (as P. Casso) The MAD Guide to Leisure Time) Double-Truck Page Spread Original Art (EC Comics/Grand Central/Warner, 1987). Woodbridge, a MAD signature artist, exercises his painterly chops with this two-pager satirizing the Fine Arts. The ink-and-watercolor piece at left spoofs the art of drawing with a nude model (discreetly depicted). The opaque-watercolor image at right takes a razz at Pablo Picasso's Cubist period, with brush-strokes so thick that they suggest sculptural values. Inscribed at lower right, with a joking reference to the "P. Casso" signature. The text portions are written by MAD stalwart Dick De Bartolo. Mixed media over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11.5" x 11". Light toning and minimal adhesive staining. Excellent condition.

Maplehurst Jersey Farms Ice Cream Advertising Piece Preliminary Original Art (Maplehurst, 1955)....
Maplehurst Jersey Farms Ice Cream Advertising Piece Preliminary Original Art (Maplehurst, 1955). Who could resist a scoop of Maplehurst Ice Cream after seeing this delightful pitch-piece? In effect a finished piece of art in itself, this conceptual design served to propose a billboard image for the Maplehurst dairies of Central New Jersey. Opaque watercolors, with drybrush effects and collage elements on illustration board. Image area, 13.5" x 7". Light to moderate toning, with scattered creasing. Jack Davis Jell-O Pudding Advertisement Original Art (Kraft Foods, c. 1970s)....
Jack Davis Jell-O Pudding Advertisement Original Art (Kraft Foods, c. 1970s). Leave it to Deep Southerner Davis to sneak a Southern folk-music tradition -- "playing the spoons" -- into a mass-market advertisement for a popular dessert product. The MAD Magazine veteran is at his spontaneous best with this energetic composition, which equates Jell-O Pudding with a musical good time. The showboating pitchman (center, left) is using two cradled spoons to slap his knee in a rhythmic fashion. Irresistible. Opaque watercolors over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 11". Steve Mannion Weird Pie #1 Preliminary Original Art (2009)....
Steve Mannion Weird Pie #1 Preliminary Original Art (2009). Few modern-day cartoonists can mingle horror and humor as effectively as Mannion, who broke out during the 1990s with his expert channeling of such EC Comics pioneers as Wally Wood and Graham Ingels. In this otherwise undeveloped conceptual piece, Mannion combines an EC sensibility with the influence of Underground Comix pioneer Vaughan Bodé -- and still comes up with a vibe that is uniquely Mannion's. The logotype lettering is terrific, and so is the central figure, an embodiment of punk insouciance. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Sheldon Moldoff Batman & Hawkman Illustration Original Art (1992). Golden Age master Moldoff revisits the characters with whose exploits he is most directly associated. Moldoff had defined the aspect of Hawkman during the 1940s, and he ghosted so extensively for Bob Kane that Moldoff might as well be considered a co-creator of Batman. Fifty years later (at the time of this drawing), Moldoff still had the classic touch. Accompanied by a COA from the collection of Batman movie producer Michael Uslan. Ink and watercolor over graphite on bright white Bristol board. Image area, 9" x 12". Light paint-moisture wrinkling. Excellent condition.

Ben Greenberg Big Little Book #2009 Popeye: Ghost Ship to Treasure Island Original Art and Published Book (Whitman, 1967). E.C. Segar's two-fisted sailor-man wallops a sea serpent in this striking wrap-around design for one of the latter-day Big Little Book offerings -- a pop-publishing phenomenon that runs parallel to the comic-book industry, combining prose stories with comics-style artwork. Greenberg captures well the rambunctious style of creator Segar, especially in the back-cover cameos of Popeye, Swee'pea, J. Wellington Wimpy, Bluto (alias Brutus), and the Sea Hag. A Good-condition copy of the book accompanies the art. The artwork is composited in layers, similar to the construction of an animation cel. Intact, but for a patch of scuffed paint on the Popeye logotype. Very Good condition.
