Darick Robertson and Rodney Ramos Transmetropolitan #56 Story Page 13 Original Art (DC/Vertigo, 2002). In a "45 minutes into the future" setting, this high-tech sociological thriller was actually way ahead of its time. Created by the brilliant minds and hands of Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson, this story "Headlong 2" is from near the end of the run. The page features Qi finding something... disturbing, on what's left of the Internet, as Martial Law starts to take effect. Charron runs to get series star Spider Jerusalem. The page was created in ink over blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 9" x 15.5". Signed by Robertson (with a cute little note) in the bottom margin. Al Kilgore Bullwinkle Daily Comic Strip Boris and Fearless Leader Original Art dated 9-12-63 (Bell-McClure Syndicate, 1963). Another fun fourth wall-breaking joke in the last panel. Al Kilgore really zeroed-in on the almost jazz-like patter and banter of Jay Ward's famous Rocky and Bullwinkle Show cartoon. So much so, that if this were an episode, we would have titled it "The Spy's the Limit -or- Carry This Out, or We Carry You Out!" Dan Piraro Bizarro Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-18-2001 (United Press Syndicate/uComics.com, 2001). "And you call yourself a Pig!" Pig-shaming has become quite the problem down on the farm. This is a particularly auspicious example of Piraro's work, as it contains several of his hidden "Secret Symbols": The Inverted Bird, Crown of Power, Mystery of K2, Pie of Opportunity, the Lost Loafer, the Eyeball of Observation, the Flying Saucer of Possibility, and the Bunny of Exuberance. We are not sure what the alligator means... but it is likely something. Created in ink over graphite on vellum paper with an image area of 12.75" x 6.5".

Lew Landsman Hollywood Side-Show Suite of Cartoon Paintings Original Art Group of 11 (Landsman Studio, c. 1940s). Prolific magazine gagman Landsman developed a gallery-show sideline with such suites as this selection, in which he parodies figures of Hollywood including the Movie Agent (a ball-and-chain), the Yes-Man (a proto-Bobblehead), the Columnist (a voyeur), and the Contract (a wringer). At once surreal and hilarious, and in much the same vein as Basil Wolverton's more grotesque cartoons. (Landsman characterized himself as "the poor man's Dali" and "the Spike Jones of art.") Ink, watercolor, and ink wash over graphite on Bristol board. Image area range, 6" x 8" to 5" x 7". Moderate toning. Very Good condition.

Fox Artist Murder Incorporated #2: "Mercy Is Akin to Death" Partial Story Original Art Group of 8 (Fox Feature Syndicate, 1952). The crime-and-horror comics craze was riding high in 1952 -- riding for a crash, in fact, with such censor-bait stories as this harsh example. Fun while it lasted, though, right up to the Comics Code purge of 1954. The story of brotherly hoodlums, though moralistic, is nonetheless sensationalized in terms of violence and intimidation. Nearly complete, the selection is missing only the fifth of nine pages. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.5" x 18.5". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.

Marvel's riposte to DC Comics' "Imaginary Stories" feature was What If? -- a rethinking of familiar heroic mythology. That accomplishment has eclipsed Patton's larger career as a general-purpose editorialist -- exemplified by this striking image of a world-menacing Adolf Hitler. L.B. Cole Classics Illustrated #152: Wild Animals I Have Known Story Page 8 Original Art (Gilberton Publ., 1959). Many fans of pre-Comics Code horror will prize Cole's grisly censor-bait cover art from the post-WWII period. Cole's greater artistry, as a naturalistic illustrator, awaits popular rediscovery. Here is a solid starting point: Cole's adaptation of Ernest Thompson Seton's Wild Animals I Have Known (1898) is as fine a comic as Classics Illustrated ever issued -- loyal to the author, and rich in interpretive artistry. This evocative page comes from the tale of a determined, territorial rabbit known as Raggylug. (Seton is remembered today as a pioneer of the Boy Scouting movement.) Pure perfection, down to the finer detail of the stencil-based lettering. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18.5". Light toning. Excellent condition.

From a story billed as "The Triumph of Hugo Strange" -- but it looks as though any triumph must belong to Batman, assuming he can survive this page's cliffhanger ending. Kurt Schaffenberger and Vince Colletta Shazam! #30 Story Page 4 Original Art (DC Comics, 1977). Captain Marvel catches bad guy Sivana in the act of sabotaging a steel mill. From a cauldron there emerges a "man of steel" -- not Superman, but rather a man made of molten steel, with a spoken reference to the mythological Joe Magarac. One of many self-referential such stories that DC produced during the 1970s, as a prelude to a fuller integration of Captain Marvel (a former Fawcett Comics trademark) into the larger DC Universe. Robert Webb (attributed) and S.M. Iger Studio All True Romance #4 Story Page 8 Original Art (Comic Media, 1952). Although S.M. "Jerry" Iger kept his bullpen talents deliberately anonymous, his art director, Webb, stands out by virtue of a distinctive style of facial design. (Webb was the key influence upon EC Comics' Al Feldstein.) One of Webb's loveliest faces graces this page in an extreme close-up (third panel) -- almost a ringer for Iger's Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, a title that Webb often ghosted. Mark Nelson The Shadow Strikes! #5 Pin-up Illustration Original Art (DC, 1990). By 1989, Mark Nelson had already had a run illustrating tales of Clonezone the Hilarator in the back-up stories of Nexus for First Comics, and also had illustrated many different titles for Eclipse comics. He would go on to do work for DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse. His take on Lamont Cranston is solid and as pulpy as it should be. Who knows how well he could have done on a regular pulp title? ...The Shadow does. This image was created in ink on Duotone board with an image area of 10.25" x 15.75". Gray Morrow - Silver Surfer Illustration Original Art (undated)....
Gray Morrow - Silver Surfer Illustration Original Art (undated). An expressive and wonderfully stylized image of the Silver Sentinel of the Spaceways, by a master draftsman with a long list of credits. His early work includes uncredited issue of Classics Illustrated for Gilberton. In the 1970s, he co-created El Diablo for DC, and co-created Man-Thing for Marvel. His superhero work is very rare (Captain America #144 being a stunning example), making this piece quite desirable. Crafted in ink over graphite on 9" x 12" paper. It was colored with color markers and taped to an 11" x 16.5" Bristol board. The bottom right corner of the paper is missing, but was likely missing at the time of creation. The markers have diffused into the tape on the edges. Signed in the lower left, partly over the top of the tape (which indicates that Morrow himself may have colored and taped this to the board), and in Excellent condition.
