Warfront #27 Story Page 6 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1955)....
Warfront #27 Story Page 6 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1955). This finely illustrated page (anonymous) comes from a story called "The Spirit of '52," in which beleaguered U.S. soldiers gain confidence from the ghosts of the Revolutionary War's famous "Spirit of '76" ensemble. Expressive facial studies might suggest the rounded style of comic-book dependable Jack Sparling. Realistic rainfall effects are the result of white-line painting and knife-blade scratching over black ink. One lightly inked panel (upper right) conveys an eerie quality. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Alice Harvey "Does He Bite?" Original Art (c. 1950s)....
Alice Harvey "Does He Bite?" Original Art (c. 1950s). Harvey, one of the hippest of the New Yorker cartoonists, had anticipated a New Yorker style of droll sarcasm even before The New Yorker magazine has been launched. That was during the 1920s, at the humor-conscious Life magazine. Harvey grew, too, as times changed. Her midcentury bobby-soxer babysitter, here, is patently a creature of the 1950s. Caption: "One more question: Does he bite?" Ink, crayon, and opaque watercolor (drybrush) over graphite on deckled off-white watercolor stock. Image area, 14" x 11". Light toning; lightly nicked edges/corners. Excellent condition.

Blondie Comics Monthly #81 Complete 5-Page Story "Winner Takes All" Original Art (Harvey, 1955). This is a socking good tale of comic misadventure with the Bumstead clan. Well-crafted in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 9.5" x 14". The title is a stat paste-up. The logo stat is missing, leaving glue residue behind. The board was carefully slit around the top of Dagwood's head to allow the original logo stat to slide behind it. The exclamation mark in the title was cut out and repositioned also. Page 2 has some stripped-in text corrections, taped in from the back. Page 5 has some original art paste-up to reduce the size of the newspaper in Dagwood's hands. Edgar Church Pronto Plumbers Advertisement Original Art (Church Studio, 1944). El Paso's Pronto Plumbers turned to Church's studio for an advert/placard that would attract the business. The image remains memorable, rendered in emphatic black-and-white with a central image very like comic-book art. Church makes especially strong use of varying textures of shading film, including white-on-black. (Church also is known as the developer of the fabled Mile High Collection of Golden Age comic books.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 6.5" x 12.5". Moderate toning and two marginal wrinkles. Very Good condition.

Warren Kremer Teen-Age Brides #3 Story Page 3 Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1953). Here is a sequence from a pre-Comics Code story that required alterations before it could be reprinted following the rise of the Code's censorship machine. The original title, "Shared Husband," was changed to "The Baby's Room" for a 1958 encore in True Bride-To-Be Romances #18. (The phrase Teen-Age Brides would not have passed muster under the Code.) The story concerns a pregnant wife who resents her husband's devotion to his over-possessive mother. Kremer's strong radial composition uses varied camera angles to dramatic effect. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". Light toning. One text alteration (lower right) has fallen away, leaving an adhesive stain. Excellent condition.

Bill Freyse Our Boarding House with Major Hoople Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-13-59 (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1959). Martha Hoople wields a vacuum cleaner like a lethal weapon -- an unusually physical gag, considering that the long-running comedy panel dealt primarily in verbal wit. Martha and Major Amos Hoople are in disagreement here over an unwelcome boarder, an English Bulldog named Cornwallis. Fine stuff from Freyse, who chronicled Hoople Manor through 30 years of boisterous hilarity. Hoople is the funnypapers' answer to W.C. Fields -- a unique, irreplaceable character. Fascinating to see how much slicker the Iger Studio's collaborative art looks in its original form, as compared with the published versions. Superior employed such lesser printing processes that much of the finery was lost. This lovely specimen of pre-Comics Code narrative boasts a crisp brush-line, expressive facial design and body language, and crisp lettering. Brilliant Deco-style art in the service of commerce. (Church is revered among comic-book buffs as the developer of the definitive Mile High Collection.) Stan Goldberg and Bob Smith Archie & Friends #113: "Dangerous Curves" Complete 11-Page Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 2007). Betty Cooper suits up anew as as a competitive race-car driver in this sequel to "Crash Course" (Archie & Friends #112). The pit-crew includes Veronica Lodge and Jughead Jones, working for wealthy Hiram Lodge's racing team. Astonishingly energetic work from the prolific Goldberg-Smith combo. (The overall continuity begins with "Fast Track to Success," in Archie #572, so there's kind of a novelistic arc going on, here.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Dave Breger Pvt. Breger and Mr. Breger Daily Single-Panel Comic Strips Original Art Group of 2 (Stars & Stripes and King Features, 1944-64). Here, from soldier to civilian, is the artist who invented the popular image of G.I. Joe, 'way back in 1942. Breger's self-caricature Army private graced the military publication Stars & Stripes during WWII, then leapt to syndication for a long run out of uniform. (Only since 1967 has the G.I. Joe line of toys belonged to the Hasbro Co. -- a far cry from Breger's conception.) The earlier piece represents a lull in battle. The Mr. Breger panel (6-27-64) is a representative domestic gag. Ink over graphite with shading. Image area, 5.5" x 7" and 7" x 8". Light to moderate toning. Very Good to Excellent condition.

Victor Joseph Gatto Modern Landscape with Mountain Lion Original Art (c. 1960s)....
Victor Joseph Gatto Modern Landscape with Mountain Lion Original Art (c. 1960s). This late-in-life entry from the acclaimed self-taught primitive trades in the typically brash and garish slashes of oil that characterize Gatto's best work -- even at a stage where his failing eyesight required the use of a magnifying glass. A notation on reverse dates the piece at 1969 (four years after the artist's death), but the work may reliably be placed within the decade. Oils on Grumbacher Panel Canvas. Image area, 8" x 10, framed to 14.5" x 12.5". Moderate varnish-drip staining in lighter areas. Excellent condition.

Lee Kohse Speed Racer: Circle of Vengeance #1 Preliminary Cover Original Art (Allegory, 2011). Kohse's detailed pencil layout is astonishingly close to his finished painting, as published. Graphite and blue-pencil breakdown on Bristol board. Image area, 11" x 17". Excellent condition.

Rube Goldberg Reluctant Playmates Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (c. 1940s)....
Rube Goldberg Reluctant Playmates Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (c. 1940s). Best-known for his comic strips featuring crazy contraptions and stupid questions, Goldberg also was an accomplished editorialist. His prestige was such that the National Cartoonists Society named its annual Reuben Award after him. Here is a fine example of his political-'toon prowess -- this one, predicated upon the farming community's traditional distrust of the Republican Party. Ink and crayon over graphite on Coquille board, with painted white highlights. Image area, 13" x 16.5", framed to 16.5" x 20.5". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.

Scotty Phillips Dinosaur Attack Painting Original Art (c. 2000s)....
Scotty Phillips Dinosaur Attack Painting Original Art (c. 2000s). Phillips' brilliant and very large deconstruction of a classic pulp-magazine image lends a Pop Art sensibility to the old-school bizarre naturalism of the original. (The source-painting, by J. Allen St. John, graced the October 1940 issue of Fantastic Adventures, introducing Robert Moore Williams' serialized Jongor of Lost Land.) Boldly scaled and impressively colored, in a dreamlike alternating combination of delicate and bold brush-strokes. Mixed media on heavy-duty fibreboard. Image area, 17.5" x 23.5", matted to 22.5" x 28.5". Excellent condition.

Ed Dodd Back Home Again Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-21-38 (United Feature Syndicate, 1938). Dodd's native-Southerner background made him a natural to develop this affectionately caricatured feature, titled "Doodlebug", which pre-dated his more famous nature strip, Mark Trail, by 16 years. There is a patent influence here from senior cartoonist J.R. "Jim" Williams, whose Out Our Way feature had established a Gold Standard for rural humor. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 12", matted and framed to 16.5" x 16.5". Excellent condition.

J.A. Williams Harper's Weekly Original Art (Harper & Bros, 1908). Historic political-satire piece depicts an outbreak of greed, "like flies about a sugar barrel." Williams' assured line and mastery of facial expressions and body language make this one worth mentioning in the same breath with a more famous contemporary, the great Thomas Nast. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Gene Hazelton The Flintstones Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-29-65 (McNaught Syndicate/Hanna-Barbera, 1965). One of the funnier Flintstones gags, here, in this large-scale composition -- a riff, in fact, on another famous comic strip, Walt Kelly's Pogo, and its recurring joke about Albert the Alligator and his voracious appetite. Fred Flintstone's final-panel facial expression is priceless. Signed by Hazelton on reverse. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 7", framed to 28.5" x 14.5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Ed Janis Invisible Terror Movie-Concept Portrait Original Art (American Academy Productions/Janis Productions, 1965). Never heard of Invisible Terror? Might be because producer Janis changed the title abruptly to cash in on a larger studio's Beach Party series of hit movies. The film became The Beach Girls and the Monster -- so infuriating Beach Party honcho Sam Arkoff that he pulled a hostile buy-out and dumped Janis' film into the wastelands of night-owl television. That's the fascinating back-story of this large-scale, cartoonish gem, which Janis presented to Famous Monsters editor Forrest J Ackerman for display in Los Angeles' Ackermansion galleries. Ink, charcoal, pastels, and chalk on textured, pale-green watercolor stock. Image area, 17" x 23", matted to 22" x 28". Superficial scuffing, with one tiny puncture at upper center. Excellent condition.
