Frank Miller Barney Baxter Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-11 (King Features Syndicate, c. 1940s)....
Frank Miller Barney Baxter Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-11 (King Features Syndicate, c. 1940s). This wartime daily spotlights beautiful penwork, deepened by Miller's distinctively rippled cross-hatching technique. The episode displays fighter planes aloft, and there is a terrific close-up of heroic Barney Baxter, looking angry and perplexed. A cryptic notation at lower left reads, "1930," but of course the feature would not originate until 1936. Image area, of 20" x 5". Light age-toning. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Ralph Briggs Fuller Oaky Doaks Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-8-42 (The Associated Press/Wide World Features, 1942). Fuller's splendid knight-in-armor strip might be considered the Prince Valiant before Prince Valiant, which it preceded by a matter of months -- except that Fuller applied a greater load of wordplay and slapstick humor. This splendid example finds heroic Okay Doaks poised to rescue one of the goofier supporting characters. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.25" x 5". Light toning. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.

Amy Hadley (as Amy Reeder) and Richard Friend Madame Xanadu: Disenchanted Partial Story Original Art Group of 5 (DC Comics/Vertigo, 2009). Hadley, or Reeder, or Reeder-Hadley (the billing varies) had made her earliest strides in Manga style, but her maturation to more of an Art Nouveau decorative manner is a breakthrough of a high order. This wordless sequence covers pages 31-35 of a story that blends elegant fantasy and outright horror in a fascinating way. Friend's inking is similarly delicate and emphatic. Aubrey Beardsley, a master of 19th-century Nouveau, might be impressed. Autographed/initialed on reverse. Ink over graphite on bright white Bristol board. Image area, 10.5" x 16". Excellent condition.

Top Cat Sewing Cards Box Cover Original Art (Whitman Publications, 1961). Whitman's licensing of the Hanna-Barbera teevee-toon characters went well beyond books to encompass such creative playthings as the Top Cat Sewing Cards, which encouraged embroidery activities. This delightful painting consists of a basic, richly colored illustration, with an additional translucent layer containing yarn-like title-card lettering. Gouache on illustration board, with cel-like overlay. Image area, 15.5" x 11.25". Two diagonal scars in overlay. Very Good condition.

Superman Nova Série #20 Cover Original Art (Ebal Publ., 1957)....
Superman Nova Série #20 Cover Original Art (Ebal Publ., 1957). This anonymously rendered cover from Brazil's Superman comic book features a Man of Steel who resembles a combination of Kirk Alyn and George Reeves, who portrayed the character in live-action moving pictures of the 1940s-50s. The inset drawing (lower left) depicts Superbaby. The issue was built from inventory pieces that had originated with DC Comics during 1953 and 1956. Ink over graphite on lightweight Bristol board. Image area, 11.25" x 16.25". Typeset stats are intact. Missing are the Superman logotype and the publisher's colophon. Pronounced toning, with scattered adhesive staining. Excellent condition.

Milton Caniff Terry and the Pirates Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-21-44 (News Syndicate Co., 1944). The comics culture would be immeasurably poorer if Caniff had followed his original ambition to become an actor. He became a playwright for paper actors, instead -- that is, a comics writer-artist -- and built a legacy of lasting wonder with such elements as this gem. Here, one of Caniff's emblematic Strong Woman archetypes stands her ground against an enemy captor, with wisenheimer dialogue and emphatic body-language. A brilliant high-contrast composition, with lighting on a par with Old Hollywood's film noir style. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Edgar Church Biltmore Dry Cleaning & Laundry Logotype Design Original Art (Church Studio, 1939)....
Edgar Church Biltmore Dry Cleaning & Laundry Logotype Design Original Art (Church Studio, 1939). Church's Deco-influenced art-lettering could make any store or service shop look inviting: A cleaning establishment in Phoenix benefited from this striking design, which also points up Church's fondness for comic-book cover-banner techniques. Production notes on reverse indicate published use during 1939 and 1945. (Church also is a legendary figure in comic-book history, as the compiler of the fabled Mile High Collection.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 8.5" x 8.5". Moderate age-toning. Excellent condition.

Frederic Rodrigo Gruger Saturday Evening Post Illustrations Original Art Group of 2 (Curtis Publ., c. 1920s). Gruger was the Norman Rockwell before Norman Rockwell -- a mainstay of the SatEvePost, hailed by Time magazine as "the dean of U.S. magazine illustrators," and an acknowledged influence upon the great Rockwell his own self. These pieces, from stories undocumented, capture Gruger at a peak of photorealistic pencil artistry, smearing the graphite with a fingertip or an eraser to achieve textures long considered unique in the profession. Graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 12" x 9". Moderate age-toning. Excellent condition.

Jill Thompson Scary Godmother Pin-Up Original Art (2000). Thompson's signature character dominates this Halloweenish composition, accompanied by supporting monsters Bug-a-Boo and Mr. Pettibone. A bracingly assembled piece, at once funny and scary, combining a playful punklike attitude with a measured, economical professionalism of style. Brilliant stuff, in other words. Finer details include visual references to the counterculture comics Hellblazer and 100 Bullets. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Edgar Church Lowry Radio Service Logotype Design Original Art (Church Studio, 1946)....
Edgar Church Lowry Radio Service Logotype Design Original Art (Church Studio, 1946). Church's clean-lined advertising-design style owed as much to comic-book influences as to the conventions of commercial art. His logo for a Phoenix-based service shop resembles some superhero-title symbol from the Golden Age of Comics. (Church also developed the legendary Mile High Collection of funnybooks.) This piece is initialed twice by Church on reverse, with notes indicating a range of dates during the 1940s. Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlights. Image area, 8" x 8". Light to moderate toning. One tiny divot missing from shading film (lower left). Excellent condition.

Alfred Andriola Kerry Drake Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-3-65 (Publishers Newspaper Syndicate, 1965). Andriola has started Kerry Drake in 1943 as a vengefully motivated detective feature similar to Chester Gould's Dick Tracy, to the finer point of a procession of eccentric villains. The feature gradually developed a more lifelike look (thanks largely to assistant Fran Matera's realistic inking), but the offbeat criminals remained: The female miscreant here (far right) even sports exaggerated eyes resembling many a badwoman in Dick Tracy. This brisk installment has a fierce momentum. Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18.5" x 5.75". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Frederick Coffay Yohn The Red Symbol: Chapter 16, "Love or Comradeship?" Original Art (Little, Brown, 1910). Yohn's soulful illustrations graced many a bold novel of the period -- none more expressive than this tense encounter from John Ironside's tale of foreign intrigue. Where the published version reproduced Yohn in straightforward black-and-white (greyscale), the large-scale original art shows a broad natural palette of greys, tans, and pure-white highlights, on an off-white base. Ink, watercolor, and ink-wash (drybrush) over graphite on heavyweight illustration board. Image area, 14" x 17". Moderate age-toning and two smudged areas at upper center-right. Excellent condition.

Jim Holdaway Modesty Blaise Daily Comic Strip Original Art No. 198 (London Times Mirror, 1964). A high point from the second Modesty Blaise suspense serial, "The Long Lever." This superior example features Modesty and Willie Garvin. This strip has an approximate image area of 19.5" x 5.5". As is common with Modesty Blaise strips drawn by co-creator Holdaway, the art-paper surface (ink over graphite) has been peeled from its manufactured board-backing; otherwise, the art is in Very Good condition, with scattered adhesive staining and two marginal nicks. Don Perlin Ghost Rider #50 Story Page 11 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1980). The bearing of Marvel's Western-adventure comics upon the Superhero idiom comes into a sharper focus in this crossover page: Johnny Blaze, the modern-day supernatural motorcyclist known as Ghost Rider, finds himself transported to a long-gone frontier setting, where he encounters the horseback Ghost Rider (alias Night Rider). A recap of the Wild West Ghost Rider's origin accounts for half the page. Perlin's deft and economical art lends narrative urgency. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Before he took charge of Terry & the Pirates from Milton Caniff in 1946, Wunder had toiled in near-anonymity as a general-purpose cartoonist and editorialist with Associated Press Newsfeatures. This elusive suspense piece suggests an unissued, possibly undeveloped, pilot strip, what with its Depression-era fashions and a pulp-fiction inking style quite different from Wunder's AP work. A brilliantly conceived piece, withal. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 24.5" x 6". Moderate toning, barked corners, and one vertical crease (midpoint). Very Good condition. Delbo is in top form in this stirring page from a coming-of-age story: Prehistoric supporting character Andar has disabled a crocodilian dinosaur and fled to (comparative) safety in a swamp. The long-nosed monster appears in two panels -- a spectacularly scary creature -- and a horned 'saur (which Andar calls a "honker") dominates the final panel. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Bud Sagendorf Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-3-66 (King Features Syndicate, 1966). Sagendorf's Popeye roots run deep -- starting with an apprenticeship to creator E.C. Segar during the 1930s, and then gradually assuming the lead position of author-artist. This delightful example of Popeye a la Sagendorf hangs upon a recurring villain, the Sea Hag, and a strange doll that resembles Popeye's sweetie, Olive Oyl. Inscribed to comics buff Marvin Zitzman, a prominent competitive chess player. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 5.5". Light toning, with one vertical crease at midpoint. His depiction of a "bestial, inhuman ... huge mole" accounts for a classic image of the pre-Comics Code period -- but what really stands out is the tormented face seen in the second panel. Brilliant stuff from an artist who would survive the horror-comics shakeout of 1954 to become one of Marvel Comics' more dependable backup talents. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Neal Adams and Dick Giordano Batman: Stacked Cards [Book and Record Set] #PR27 Page 10 Original Art (Power Records, 1975). Vintage 70s era Neal Adams Batman art, with inks by DC legend Dick Giordano. A page like this is a "Grail item" for many comic art collectors. Not only is there a fantastic layout (check out Panel 2), but the last panel also shows the results of the Joker's insidious "Joker gas". A chilling reminder that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Joker was a deadly adversary. This page was created in ink and Zipatone over graphite on paper with an image area of 10" x 15". The suggestive logotype, from very early in Church's brilliant graphic-design career, proves to have been commissioned for a hairdressing salon in Church's home-base city of Denver. Though technically a sketch, the piece conveys an attention to detail that suggests the nearness of a final inked version. V.T. Hamlin and Dave Graue Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-16-66 (Newspaper Enterprise Association, 1966). The hit recording of Dallas Frazier's "Alley Oop" (1960) had averred that the cartoon caveman "don't eat nothin' but bearcat soup." Creator Hamlin demonstrated otherwise with this splendid installment: Oop develops a craving for "barbecued dinosaur" -- only to be thwarted by the parent of his intended victim. The piece also echoes the protective-mother plot of a famous dinosaur movie of 1961, Gorgo. Brilliantly composed, with Hamlin's innate gift for suggesting depth in two dimensions, with polished inking by longtime assistant Graue. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.25" x 6". Roy Crane and Henry G. Schlensker Buz Sawyer Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-30-58 (King Features Syndicate, 1958). Crane made a point of crediting assistant Schlensker with "finishing [the art] from my rough drawings" on the heroic military strip Buz Sawyer. The style, of course, is purely that developed by Crane, one of the comics' great innovators. This example makes fine dimensional use of open white space, with texture and depth supplied by the use of chemically activated layers of shading. Ink over graphite on Craftint stock. Image area, 16.75" x 5". Excellent condition.

Bob Schoenke Jane Arden Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-11-67 (Register & Tribune Syndicate, 1967)....
Bob Schoenke Jane Arden Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-11-67 (Register & Tribune Syndicate, 1967). Schoenke's two-year run on Jane Arden, a radio-derived serial strip, often is confused with the artist's more personally conceived Laredo Crockett, a Western feature of incalculable influence upon comics and the movies. The reason for such confusion is simple: Schoenke had given Jane Arden a frontier setting, like Crockett, but with a female protagonist. This stark and violent installment is drawn in the distinctive loose-brush style which made Schoenke a favorite of the Italian Western filmmaker Sergio Leone. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 18" x 5.75". Light toning. A ragged clipping of the published comic is included. Excellent condition.

Walt Kelly Pogo Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-18-71 (Publishers-Hall Syndicate, 1971). Classic double-talk routine, here, between key supporting characters Churchy LaFemme and Howland Owl. Though partially sidelined by illness and equipped with various assistants at this stage, Kelly maintained creative authority as a matter of what he once called "keeping the characters honest." This episode is as honest as they come -- and a hum-dinger of a gag, too, of the "Say What!?" variety. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20" x 6". Excellent condition.

Dan O'Neill Odd Bodkins Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-21-70 (Chronicle Publ., 1970)....
Dan O'Neill Odd Bodkins Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 7-21-70 (Chronicle Publ., 1970). This fine semi-Underground piece is distinguished by a variation upon Sir John Tenniel's Jabberwock (from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland). O'Neill, a forerunner/founder of the controversial Air Pirates Underground Comix collective, had become at 21 one of the youngest syndicated cartoonists with the launch of Odd Bodkins in 1964 at the San Francisco Chronicle. The feature veered increasingly toward counterculture weirdness, as shown here -- part of O'Neill's strategy to persuade the Chronicle to cede the copyright, by making the gags increasingly bizarre. (He finally succeeded in 1972.) Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 19.5" x 5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.

Jesse Marsh Gene Autry #40 Unpublished Conceptual Illustration Original Art (Dell Comics, 1940). Autry, a box-office champ among Hollywood cowboys, involved himself in his comic-book spinoffs to the extent of selecting the assigned artists. He picked a winner in Marsh, who not only illustrated many fine stories but also created such grand-scale, character-defining drawings as this one -- a finished, privately circulated guide, as opposed to a preliminary sketch. Marsh's note (lower left) indicates Dell's Autry #39, but the pertinent story, "Lucky Piece," saw print in the following issue. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 14". Robert Webb (attributed) Journey into Fear Story Page 6 Original Art (Superior Publ., 1951)....
Robert Webb (attributed) Journey into Fear Story Page 6 Original Art (Superior Publ., 1951). Webb's mastery of emphatic facial design and supple line-weight worked a big influence on EC Comics' Al Feldstein, who had apprenticed under Webb during the 1940s. This climax to a pre-Code horror yarn (called "One of Us Must Die!") resembles a romance-comics page, what with its tearful and smoochy encounter. Here, Webb seems to have eschewed his Iger Studio custom of engaging anonymous assembly-line inkers, for his style shines in every brush-stroke. As with most Iger Studio work, the art is crisper and brighter than it ever appeared under Superior's cost-cutting printing methods. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". Roger Bollen Animal Crackers Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 10 (Chicago Tribune-NY News Syndicate, 1984). Roger Bollen suffered a severe studio fire in 1991, which destroyed much of his original artwork. Even more was lost when repair work resulted in a second fire. The dates are: 4-19 (paste-up text correction), 4-24, 4-27, 10-3, 10-4, 10-5, 11-20, 12-1, 12-10, and 12-18. Gus Mager Main Street Hand-Colored Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (N.Y. World/Press Pub Co., c. 1923)....
Gus Mager Main Street Hand-Colored Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (N.Y. World/Press Pub Co., c. 1923). Gus Mager never met a pun he didn't like! His character names were usually a play on words, much the same as George McManus did in Bringing Up Father. In this Sunday strip, Henry Meek, is not quite so meek about his tactics to sneak out of the house for a "low-brow outing". Produced in ink over graphite on Strathmore Bristol board with an image area of 21.5" x 25.5", it has been partially watercolored (presumably by Mager) with several color notes to the printer in the borders. The Bristol board has edge and corner wear, with the lower left corner missing, not affecting the art. Part of the paste-up logo is missing, and there are several ink stains in the title panel, and into the second panel. Overall in Good to Very Good condition.
