Stan Goldberg & John Lowe Archie & Friends #97: "The Characters" Complete 6-Page Story Original Art (Archie Comics, 2006). Brilliant stuff, here, from an experimental phase of the Archie mythology: Aspiring author Tomoko Yoshida writes about her pals at Riverdale High School -- changing Jughead's name to "Lughead," Veronica to "Monica," and so forth. In an unusual twist, Archie's name becomes "Starchie" -- a pointed reference to Harvey Kurtzman's notorious MAD comic-book parody of 1954, "Starchie!" The self-referential subtext lends depth and cultural baggage to an otherwise lighthearted story. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15".
