Stan Goldberg Laugh Comics #378 Complete 6-Page Story "Flight Plan!" Original Art (Archie Comics, 1983).... (Total: 6 Original Art)
Stan Goldberg Laugh Comics #378 Complete 6-Page Story "Flight Plan!" Original Art (Archie Comics, 1983). Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, stars in this rambunctious slapstick piece, along with her old-school witch-aunts, Zelda and Hilda. The story ponders the distinction between an ordinary broom and a bewitched broom -- with rich moments of action and humor. An anonymous job of inking (distinguished by heavy-black outlines) lends an old-fashioned look to Goldberg's clean-lined, modernized page design. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.

Michael H. Price and Todd Camp Hyena #3: "Twin Freaks" Complete 6-Page Story and Additional Splash Original Art (Tundra Publ., 1993). The David Lynch-Mark Frost production of Twin Peaks inspired this rip-snorting parody from Price & Camp -- one of their many follow-throughs to the Carnival of Souls graphic novel (1991). Both artists were working under the direct influence of MAD Magazine's creator, Harvey Kurtzman, and this spoof imagines what a MAD lampoon of Twin Peaks might have looked like if done by Kurtzman and Bill Elder. A seventh (alternate-ending) page comes from a prototype, or preliminary, version that had appeared in the Twin Peaks tribute magazine Wrapped in Plastic. Accompanying production materials, including Velox negatives, contain memoranda from Tundra editor Mark Martin. Ink over graphite and blue pencil on RegCo Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning. Excellent condition.

Al Kilgore - Quisp and Quake Cereal Premium Original Art and Production Materials Group of 40 (Quaker, 1965). In the early 1960s the Jay Ward studio was asked to design several mascots for breakfast cereals. In addition to creating Cap'n Crunch, Ward and his partner Bill Scott came up with a pair of mascots named Quake and Quisp. Theirs was a cereal-based rivalry for the hearts and minds of children everywhere, in that they were frequently advertised together. Al Kilgore, already working on the Bullwinkle comic strip, also developed a series of comic strip booklets that were inserted into the boxes as premiums. The original art included in this large collection of material is: one complete inked comic strip (17" x 5.5" image area on Bristol board), two back cover comic strip graphite prelims (15.5" x 12.5" on onionskin paper); and a graphite comic strip prelim (16.75" x 5.25" on onionskin paper). Also included are some rough layouts, scripts, a pile of stats (of finished strips), and a printed box (folded flat) of each cereal. The cartoon on the back of the Quake box matches one of the prelims included in this group. These all came from Al Kilgore's files. The onionskin tracing papers are toned and folded. Most stats have wear and handling and some have folds. Overall condition of this lot is Very Good.

Dame Darcy Meat Cake V2#1 Complete 2-Page Story "Laughing All The Way To The Bank" Original Art (Fantagraphics, 1993). Hindrance and Perfidia hear a tale from a conjoined cat-twin, so naturally it devolved into a knife fight. It's just more of the Goth-Noir oddness from the incredibly talented Dame Darcy! Jill Thompson - Delight/Delirium of the Endless Illustration Original Art (c. 2004). Anytime Jill Thompson draws one of the Endless (from the Sandman series), fans sit up and take notice. This adorable image features the character known as Delirium when she was a baby (long before the Universe existed). At that time, she was known as Delight, instead. As a huge bonus, it seems to also picture Goldie, the pet gargoyle of Cain from the House of Mystery, when Goldie was just a hatchling. This piece was created in ink, ink wash, and a touch of blue over graphite on 11" x 14" onionskin paper. Personalized and signed in the lower right. In Excellent condition.

Dave Breger Mister Breger Daily Single-Panel Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-27-46 (King Features Syndicate, 1946). Here is the artist who invented the popular image of G.I. Joe, 'way back in 1942. Only since 1967 has the G.I. Joe line of action-figure toys belonged to the Hasbro Co. -- a far cry from Breger's original gag-cartoon conception. The present selection, Mister Breger, descends from the artist's wartime comic strips, Private Breger and G.I. Joe. Here, Breger's semi-autobiographical character attempts to dispense a golf lesson, only to find that his girlfriend already has the knack. Ink over graphite on Duo-Tone chemical-shading board. Image area, 7" x 7.5". Light to moderate toning, more pronounced at edges. Excellent condition.

Jill Thompson Death: At Death's Door (nn) Story Page 50 Despair and Delirium Original Art (DC/Vertigo, 2003). Jill Thompson draws Death, Despair and Delirium of the Endless from the Sandman series! Three great characters on one page makes this quite a deal, but when you see that super-cute anime-style close-up and the lovely full body image... it's just almost too kawaii to handle! Delirium has a bit of a Marge Buell "Little Lulu" look to her in the bottom left of the 7.5" x 11" image area. The page was crafted in ink over graphite on 11" x 17" DC Bristol board, with some lettering correction paste-up. It is personalized and signed below the image area. The page has been affixed to a 15" x 20" cardboard backing. Otherwise, in Excellent condition.

Celardo worked both sides of the street, as a pioneering Golden Age comic-book artist and then as a prominent figure in the upscale comic-strip industry. This evocative example of his long stretch on Tarzan (1954-'58) is a cinematic panorama, depicting Edgar Rice Burroughs' jungle hero in the act of setting a big-cat trap. Stan Lynde Rick O'Shay Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-2-64 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1964). Lynde, a working rancher and practicing cartoonist, created Rick O'Shay in 1958 as a pun-filled parody of TV Westerns. By the time of this splendid example, Lynde had adopted a more earnest agenda of dramatic continuity and political satire -- as seen in this timely commentary on the 1964 Presidential election from a Native American viewpoint of genial cynicism. (Lynde also was a champion of tribal rights.) The brisk dialogue and the crisp art combine in a delightful buoyancy. Signed (in 1967), with an inscription to Manfred Zitzman, a prominent educator and chess champion. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 16" x 5". Light to moderate toning, more pronounced at edges. Marginal wrinkling. Excellent condition.

Chuck Austen's meteoric career started with several stories in Miracle Man (as Chuck Beckum) written by Alan Moore, Hero Sandwich (from Slave Labor), followed by a run of Phantom Lady stories in Action Comics Weekly, and eventually led to him writing a concurrent run of JLA and X-Men stories. This splendid example finds Hazard under the gun (yes, literally) while investigating an art-theft racket. The large-scale panorama allows for two cinematic high-angle shots and a desperate, sweat-drenched two-shot close-up. Magnificent. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21.5" x 6". "I thought every well-balanced comic sheet should have one." The long-term survival of Harold Teen depended upon Ed's ability to relate his characters to each successive generation of teen-age readers. Wilson McCoy The Phantom Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-26-57 through 9-28-57 Group of 3 (King Features Syndicate, 1957). McCoy, an adventurous worldwide expeditioner like Phantom creator Lee Falk, took charge of the art during WWII and stuck with the feature for almost 20 years. These consecutive examples catch McCoy at a peak of bold illustrative strength, from a sequence in which the title hero is absent. The fluid linework and slightly askew anatomical construction resemble that of a famous contemporary, Superman co-creator Joe Shuster: The central character almost could be a middle-aged Clark Kent. The emphatic, ideally compatible lettering is the work of Dorothy McCoy, the artist's wife. Ink and Zipatone shading film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.75" x 6". Light toning. The movies' first Western star was Broncho Billy Anderson (né Max Aaronson), dating from the 1910s. Anderson's influence weighs heavily on O'Neill's strip, Broncho Bill, despite the lack of any formal connections. The comic had started during the 1920s (after Anderson's retirement), under other titles, Young Buffalo Bill and Buckaroo Bill, and settled on Broncho Bill in 1932. Overgard created Mike Nomad in 1956 as a key supporting character in Steve Roper, a novelistic chronicle of crime-busting journalism. Nomad, a rough-and-tumble working-class type with antiheroic tendencies, gradually became the leading character -- foreshadowing the addition of Norman Reedus' similarly conceived Daryl Dixon to the ensemble cast of TV's The Walking Dead. A splendid example of Parker & Hart's minimalist-style gag feature, a companion development to Hart's groundbreaking B.C. Such exaggerated anatomies had become a craze during the 1950s, triggered by the success of such limited-animation cartoon studios as U.P.A. ("Gerald McBoing-Boing") and Jay Ward ("Crusader Rabbit"). Michael H. Price WFMU L.C.D. Magazine: "Major Bill Smith" Complete 2-Page Story and Accompanying Portrait Original Art (WFMU-Radio of New Jersey, 1996). Major Bill Smith, the controversial producer of such rock 'n' roll hits as "Hey, Baby!" and "Hey, Paula," gets a sarcastic biographical treatment in this neo-Underground Comix survey from rock journalist/cartoonist Price. The accompanying pointillist portrait had originated with a newspaper story, c. 1982, about Smith. The comics story here emphasizes Smith's high-profile campaign to "prove" that Elvis Presley had survived into the '90s to make new recordings with Major Bill. All three pieces reappeared together in Price's 2016 book, Thick Lights, Loud Smoke, and Dim, Dim Music. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image areas, 11.75" x 15" (2 pcs.) and 13" x 9". Al McWilliams Twin Earths Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-8-57 (United Feature Syndicate, 1957). The daily version of this strip started in 1952. When the Sunday strips started up in 1953, they came up with an innovative solution to the problem of not every paper carrying both dailies and Sundays. The Sunday strip would have all-new characters in it and run a completely separate story track starring a young Texas boy named Punch, and Prince Torro, of the planet Terra. Sam Berman Don Quixote Original Art (Collier's Magazine, c. 1940s)....
Sam Berman Don Quixote Original Art (Collier's Magazine, c. 1940s). The intended political allegory, here, may be lost to the ages, but Berman's vivid evocation of Don Quixote retains an impact. Of singular interest is the use of dense opaque watercolors in dense layers, the better to create an illusion of antiquity and dimension in a two-dimensional image. Powerful stuff. Watercolors and drybrush effects on illustration board. Image area, 8.5" x 10.25", matted to 15.25" x 20.25'. Matte shows moderate age-toning and barked corners/edges. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.

Jerry Moriarty Pinboy Original Comic/Painting Art (c. 1980s)....
Jerry Moriarty Pinboy Original Comic/Painting Art (c. 1980s). Moriarty's command of everyday working-class imagery dates from the 1970s and a début gallery show in SoHo, but his larger breakthrough came via Art Spiegelman's magazine, RAW, and a collection of offbeat plain-folks cartoons called Jack Survives. The artist describes himself as "a paintoonist," conflating painter with cartoonist. This large-scale, woodcut-like composition depicts a pinsetting operation at a bowling alley. The publishing pedigree is undocumented. Drybrush (ink and white watercolor) over graphite on toothy Bristol board. Image area, 16.5" x 21.5". Light toning. Excellent condition.
