PRINCE VALIANT Sunday Strip
Harold R. Foster pencils, inks and signed; 9/21/1969; image size 22.5" x 34"

Hal Foster was one of the first adventure strip artists in the young medium, working on Tarzan beginning in 1928, his distinctive style and attention to detail made him a very sought-after artist, and, after striking a lucrative deal with newpaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, he launched Prince Valiant, which would go on to become his life's work. This brilliantly illustrated entry into the long-running series comes from one of the last years of Foster's tenure on the strip, and all of his defining hallmarks are on full display, lush graphics, descriptive text, and beautiful layouts. This is simply an undeniably wonderful piece from the lasting legacy of Hal Foster and his life-long love for the comic art form.Art is folded into three horizontal panel sections.

SAVAGE HAWKMAN Issue #5 Cover
Philip Tan pencils, inks and signed; 2012; image size 10.25" x 15.75"

This cover piece for The Savage Hawkman #5 shows the winged hero doing battle with a horde of zombies, which, according to the story within this issue's pages, only he can see. Hawkman imagines he is going mad but soon finds out he is the victim of an occult plot. Philip Tan's art for this cover piece is an impressive Modern Age illustration, which is certainly attempting to mimic the success and fanfare for zombies that began with the Walking Dead. Tan is another impressive artist from the long line of Filipino illustrators that have worked in the comic industry for years, always providing quality work with distinctive personality.

TALES OF SUSPENSE Issue #47 Interior Page
Pg. 6; Steve Ditko pencils, Don Heck inks; image size 12.25" x 18.5"; matted 16" x 22" Iron man battles the Melter

This is the original art by Steve Ditko and Don Heck for an early Silver Age Iron Man appearance in Tales of Suspense #47. Depicting a much-less-streamlined Iron Man than we now know and love, this cool page features Tony Stark mid-battle in his first dramatic confrontation with The Melter. This issue marks the colorful villain's first appearance and origin story. Bruno Horgan, the industrialist, was one of Stark's competitors, driven out of business for selling shoddy merchandise to the Pentagon before discovering a beam of energy capable of melting iron. He is shown on this page invading Stark Industries, out for revenge, destroying power generators, and grinning fiendishly at Iron Man's arrival on the scene. Iron Man confronts his enemy only to realize he risks getting his armor melted while he's wearing it. These panels capture the first of many meetings between the two technological titans.

TERRY AND THE PIRATES Issue #25 Cover
Lee Elias pencils and inks; logo is a stat; 10.25" x 15.5"

This cover art for Terry and the Pirates #25 is full of the machismo, action, and powerful graphics that had become synonomous with the pulpy style of war comics of the era. The exciting Lee Elias illustration was typical of his storied career, working on titles such as Black Cat and All Star Comics in the 40s and 50s, only to leave the industry after being singled out in the "Seduction of the Innocent" hubbub. Upon his return he worked well into the 70s on titles like Human Fly and Power Man before taking a job at the Kubert School. This piece stands as a testament to the solid contributions Elias made to the storied history of comics, and is an excellent example of his talent and expertise in composition.

TALES TO ASTONISH Issue #84 Half Splash
Pg. 8; Gene Colan pencils, Dick Ayers inks; 13.75" x 20""Like a Beast at Bay!"

This Gene Colan/Dick Ayers Silver Age artwork for a half-splash from Tales to Astonish #84, features Namor, aka The Sub-Mariner, in the story "Beast at Bay" from 1966. He is shown here incognito, blending in with the crowd, wearing a trench coat and shoes he stole from a clothing store. Before he lost his memory to simple-onset post-explosion amnesia, Number One of the Secret Empire persuaded him to join forces in pursuit of the Incredible Hulk, said to be at large in New York City. In the upper panel, Namor notices a movie theater has the words "The Hulk" up on the marquee and is screening newsreel footage of the same green monster he is hunting. In the lower panel, he is shown taking a seat in the theater, another strange face in the crowd, as he broods about his lost memory and a possible confrontation with a mighty opponent.

Here in these panels, Rick is talking with Morgan Jones, whose son Duane had previously knocked him out cold with a shovel, mistaking him for one of the undead. After recovering, Rick brings Morgan to the police station to procure rifles and police cars for use against the walkers. Morgan reassures Rick that he hasn't gone crazy; everything has changed since before he was taken to the hospital with a bullet wound sustained in the line of duty. Yet Rick remains hesitant and uncertain, even though he senses Morgan's sincerity and goodwill. As Rick closes and locks the gate of the chain-link fence surrounding the patrol cars, he seems to be saying goodbye to his former life, and a civilization he once knew. As he drives away a walker, with his forearm partly eaten away, arrives on the scene as if to welcome Rick to a waking nightmare. Signed by original Walking Dead artist, Tony Moore, these characteristic drawings capture the eerie contrast between ordinary existence as usual and the uncanny menace of the undead.

Pgs. 8-9; Charlie Adlard pencils and inks; image size 10.25" x 13.5"

These gruesome panels show the final encounter between Rick and the prison guard, Martinez, who has been working for the sadistic self-appointed boss known as the Governor. To prevent Martinez from returning to the Governor at Woodbury, Rick drives after him and runs him over with an SUV, then confronts him as he lies injured on the ground. Complaining of the Governor's vicious brutality, Rick turns violent himself and strangles Martinez with his remaining hand. This graphic portrayal of enmity has an intimate quality. Unable to trust Martinez, Rick wants to understand him and, failing to do so, wonders if he knows himself as he walks away from his victim.

WALKING DEAD Issue #2 Splash Page
Pg. 2; Tony Moore pencils, inks and signed; image size 9" x 14"Rick leaves the car behind and heads on foot to find his family

Rick standing beside his police car, which has just run out of gas, drove hard all night in an attempt to reach his family whom he hasn't seen since the recent massive outbreak of killer corpses. He is wary and watchful as he searches through a desolate world, about to leave his vehicle and safety behind. It's a prime example of Moore's artistry from the early Walking Dead issues. Easily the most influential and important of modern comics, Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead has given birth to not only a virtual horde of tie-in entertainment, from TV to gaming to practically everything else, but has also inspired an entire generation of comic artists and writers moved by the series' literate storytelling, raw emotionalism, and careful pacing. Just as the early issues of the series command top prices, thanks to their low print runs, original art from the title is eagerly sought by serious collectors. Most notable are pages drawn by Tony Moore, as his quick departure from the series means that very little work from the original illustrator is available. The image of Rick still wearing his sheriff's hat evokes nostalgia from the die-hard fans of TWD and this super-early piece is poised to fetch an impressive price, especially thanks to the scarcity of Moore's work.

NOTE: Piece conserved by Aitchison & Watters with rice paper.

Pg. 22; Charlie Adlard pencils and inks; image size 6.75" x 10.25"Rick confronts Negan about Carl's disappearance

This splash page by Charlie Adlard shows a dramatic confrontation between bitter enemies. Rick is the leader of the Alexandria group, and Negan is the boss of the Saviors and kingpin of a protection racket that has been causing trouble for Rick and his followers. When Rick's son Carl disappears, he suspects Negan is responsible and goes off to find him at the Sanctuary. While on his way there, he runs into his nemesis, who says he was coming to tell Rick that he has indeed taken Carl hostage, and has done nasty things to him. The image is reminiscent of David and Goliath, with Negan, his face covered in shadow, towering above Rick with an evil smirk.

WALKING DEAD Issue #127 Cover
Unpublished; Charlie Adlard pencils, inks and signed; image size 9" x 13.75"1st app Magna and the Richmond group

This is an original signed drawing by Charlie Adlard, an unpublished version of the cover of Walking Dead #127. The issue (and this illustration) introduces a new main character, Magna, who leads a contingent of the Richmond group. This is the first episode of the new beginning for survivors in the world ravaged by the undead, which takes up the action after two years have elapsed since the previous issue. In effect, this drawing reveals Magna before her first appearance inside the comic's pages. She is shown standing with her followers close behind her, trapped on the roof of a horse trailer, trying to keep away from the clutches of a band of walking corpses that has them surrounded. In contrast to the version chosen for the cover, she appears as a resolute part of the group, not as sharply singled out as the main character.

WALKING DEAD PRODUCTION ART JOHN WATKISS: DARYL Issue #5 Preliminary Sketch
John Watkiss pencils, inks and charcoal; 8.25" x 11.5"; matted

While the now iconic television series has enthralled millions, its origins began in illustration. While comic books can be quite cinematic in structure, adapting them to the screen still proves problematic for many films and tv series. For instance, certain elements that worked great for the comic, might read differently to a television audience. This collection of production art is a rare opportunity to own official Walking Dead artwork from the talented John Watkiss, featuring alternative concepts of previously known characters and scenes from the comics and new ones made only for the TV show.

John Watkiss (1961-2017) was a British artist, known for his painting and his work in comics and film production. His career led him from cover artist for graphic novels to storyboard artist and character designer. The artist has collaborated with numerous high profile studios on projects including Tarzan, Atlantis, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and Sherlock Holmes. Watkiss' work has been featured in the British National Portrait Gallery and The Ford Motor Company Museum.

WALKING DEAD Issue #127 Cover
Charlie Adlard pencils, inks, and signed; image size 9" x 13.75"1st app Magna and the Richmond group

This is the original cover drawing for TWD #127, in which Magna makes her first appearance. This is also the first issue in the sequence entitled "A New Beginning," which takes place two years after the previous issue, where something like a "civilization" has begun to emerge in the wake of the outbreak of the undead. Magna is shown with a small band of Richmond survivors, trapped on the roof of a horse trailer and surrounded by walkers clutching hungrily upward. Despite the dire situation, she appears detached, wrapped up in her own thoughts and gazing impassively down at the undead corpses clawing at her, whose rotten, uplifted hands appear in the foreground. The image supplies an iconic introduction for this central character, representing the challenge of starting again under close-to-impossible circumstances, and is a prime example of Charlie Adlard's magnificent work.

WALKING DEAD Issue #109 Cover
Charlie Adlard pencils, inks, and signed; image size 9" x 13.5"

This is the original Charlie Adlard drawing for the cover of The Walking Dead issue #109, showing the tombstone marking the grave of Rick's long-time compatriot, Glenn, who has been beaten to death by Negan with his trusty baseball bat, Lucille. One of the comic's key characters is finished. Grieving beside the grave is Glenn's wife, Maggie, who is holding their adopted twelve-year-old, Sophia, in her arms. Behind them in silhouette is a church and a water tower. It's a striking and somber image, serving as a reminder that death can be earth-shattering, even in a world full of reanimated corpses.

John Watkiss pencils, inks and charcoal; 8.25" x 11.5"

While the now iconic television series has enthralled millions, its origins began in illustration. While comic books can be quite cinematic in structure, adapting them to the screen still proves problematic for many films and tv series. For instance, certain elements that worked great for the comic, might read differently to a television audience. This collection of production art is a rare opportunity to own official Walking Dead artwork from the talented John Watkiss, featuring alternative concepts of previously known characters and scenes from the comics and new ones made only for the TV show.

WALKING DEAD Issue #125 Splash Page
Pg. 22; Charlie Adlard pencils and signed; image size 9" x 13.5"

This splash by Charlie Adlard shows the final encounter between Rick and Negan and the shocking conclusion to their conflict. Negan thinks Rick is dead and is surprised to find him still alive when he visits the Hilltop community. Speaking after all they have been through in bitter opposition to one another, Negan begins to come around and see that his protection methods were too extreme. Despite Negan's change of heart, Rick whips out a knife and slashes his throat.

The image captures the dynamic moment, with Negan bleeding and falling back from Rick's attack, dropping Lucille with a shocked expression in contrast to Rick's furious mien. It's a vivid depiction of the final confrontation between long-time adversaries and a surprising moment indicating that Negan brought out a mean streak in the ordinarily level-headed protagonist of The Walking Dead.

WEIRD MYSTERIES Issue #9 Half Splash
Pg. 26; Art attributed to Mike Sekowsky; 14.5" x 23""Destiny's Double Deal!"

Mike Sekowsky, best known for his contributions to the Justice League of America and Wonder Woman in the 1960s, cut his teeth in the Golden Age at Timely Comics. He illustrated a variety of anthology titles, where his ability to work fast and efficiently made him a favorite among editors and his peers alike.

This striking splash page from Weird Mysteries #9 showcases some of the tropes typically employed during the pre-code horror days, where artists and writers were free to rot the minds of innocent youths looking for a cheap scare. The mirrored image in the half-splash panel is a triumph of design, perfectly setting up the tale "Destiny's Double Deal." Sekowsky's fluid line work and self-assured style leave no doubt that something nasty is about to happen. Golden Age horror pages are difficult to come by, and this rare-to-market piece is sure to garner some rapt attention at auction.

WALKING DEAD Issue #119 Splash Page
Pg. 18; Charlie Adlard pencils and signed; image size 9" x 13.5"Negan yelling for Rick to come out

This splash page by Charlie Adlard portrays Negan, the leader of the Saviors, in a characteristically belligerent attitude, standing on the hood of a tractor-trailer, flanked by his followers. He is shouting at Rick and brandishing the baseball bat, wrapped with barbed wire and studded with nails, that he calls Lucille. In his other hand, he's holding a grenade (he has already detonated another, and several more are attached to his belt) and is threatening to throw it at Rick and his companions. His bulky physique is offset by the truck, which he's standing on like a post-apocalyptic pedestal. He is a dominating figure, caught in a dramatic pose. One of The Walking Dead's most powerful antagonists, he remains defiant, despite the ups and downs of a prolonged conflict with Rick and his allies. This is a striking and emblematic portrait of a legendary villain and a prime piece of Walking Dead memorabilia.

WALKING DEAD Issue #115 Double Page Splash
Pg. 16-17; Charlie Adlard pencils and signed; image size 15.5" x 18.5"The beginning of the All Out War arc, at The Sanctuary Rick fires two shots demanding Negan come out

This double-page splash shows the beginning of the "All Out War" storyline introduced with this issue. No longer willing to abide by Negan and his brutal protection racket, Rick has put an army together combining the forces of the Kingdom, the Hilltop, and Alexandria communities. They have arrived outside Negan's stronghold, the Sanctuary, armed and ready for a showdown. Rick is shown at the head of the group, firing a gun in the air to call Negan out and give him a final chance to surrender. Behind him stand his cohorts, toting an assortment of guns and other weapons. It's an impressive piece of artwork by Charlie Adlard, a group portrait featuring Ezekiel, Michonne, and many other Walking Dead characters, as well as a dramatic illustration of a key moment in the action. The figures are highly detailed, and the drawing includes production notes for the inker, so it's also an interesting look into the creative process.
